Alfalfa grows wild in some parts of Korea, but specific information is lacking as to its growth characteristics, nutritive value and dry matter yeild. The objective of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of wild alfalfa(Medicago sativa L.) as a forage. Wild alfalfa and 'Vernal' were field sown at Keongsan, Keongbuk in the spring of 1995. Emergence for 'Vernal' was better than for wild alfalfa. It was observed that the flowering date of the wild alfalfa was delayed by 8 days. Regrowth of 'Vernal' was better than that of the wild alfalfa at each harvesting. After the last harvesting date, September 22, there was poor regrowth of the wild alfalfa, but regrowth of 'Vernal' was moderately vigorous growth. Weed infestation in the wild alfalfa plots was higher than in the 'Vernal' plots. Thle dry matter yields per hectare were significantly(P<0.05) higher for 'Vernal' than for the wild alfalfa. The CP content was slightly higher in the wild alfalfa in comparison to 'Vernal'. NDF and ADF contents were lower in the third cut, but they were not different in the 1st and 2nd cuttings.
Effect of inoculation trial on plant height and dry matter yield of seven alfalfa varieties (Medicago sativa L. var. Washoe, Ranger, Lahontan, Narragensett, Atlantic, Vernal, and Moapa 69) which are considered to be well adapted in these areas were conducted during 1973-1974 in a relatively poor soil at the field station in Kyung Hee University. Root nodule bacteria: Rhizobium meliloti (Noculator Northrup Kings Co. Ltd) was applied at a rate to provide 6 oz/30l of alfalfa seeds. Seven varieties were seeded in pots on May 31, 1973 and in second year, they were transplanted in field. 1. Dry matter yield and plant height of all inoculation plots were significantly greater than those of the no inoculation plots in all varieties. 2. In the 1973, dry matter yield of inoculation plot a in pot experiment was in the order of Moapa 69> Vernal> Lahontan> Washoe> Atlantic> Narragensett> Ranger. 3. There was no difference in dry matter yield between with and without-inoculation after transplanted in a field in the second year (1974). Total dry matter yield of varieties was in the order of Washoe> Lahontan> Moapa 69> Ranger> Narragensett> Vernal> Atlantic.
Optimum stand density of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) varies with locations and climates. Stand density is one of the factors that determines herbage yield, forage quality and persistence of alfalfa. As establishment costs increase, the question arises whether present population densities are optimum for obtaining maximum herbage yield and forage quality. The objectives of this study were: 1) to determine the optimum plant density for highest herbage yield and forage quality for the dehydrated alfalfa industry under Edmontons climatic conditions in Alberta, Canada; 2) to compare herbage yield and forage quality of the cultivars 'Algonquin' and 'Vernal' grown at a range of stand densities. Alfalfa seedlings of both cultivars were either transplanted at spacings of 6, 10, 15 and 25 cm or direct seeded at the 4.5 cm plant spacings, providing population densities of 494, 278, 100, 45 and $16plants/m^2$. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with a split-plot arrangement having three replicates; the main plots consisted of two alfalfa cultivars Algonquin and Vernal, and the sub-plots were the five population densities. The cultivar Vernal had significantly higher annual yield than did the cultivar Algonquin. There was no significant effect of plant density on herbage yield. There was no difference in crude protein (CP) between the two cultivars. At the first cut, there was a significant quadratic effect of plant density on CP content and the greatest CP occurred at the 100 plants/m2 density. Crude protein was not affected by plant density at the second cut. Acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) were not affected by plant density. The cultivar Algonquin usually had a lower ADF and NDF than cultivar Vernal. In conclusion, high population densities ($278plants/m^2$ or more) of alfalfa did not improve herbage yield and forage quality compared with low plant population densities ($100plants/m^2$ or less) of alfalfa.
A full understanding of the interdependence of leaf nitrate (($No_3$ ̄) metabolism and symbiotic nitrogen($N_2$) fixation in legume crops is needed to help maximize the use of both N sources as well as to improve forage quality through the inhibition of leaf nitrate accumulation. The present work examines the effects of added nitrate, the level of which are 0,2,4,8 and 12mM, on the nodule formation and leaf nitrate utilization and on the possibility of inducing nitrate-toxicity to livestocks in two alfalfa varieties, ' Vernal ' of grazing type and ' Victoria ' of hay type. Higher level of exogeneous nitrate resulted in the increased above-ground dry weight. Nodulation was inhibited severely when more than 8mM NO$_3$ ̄ was supplied to alfalfa plants, and leaf nitrate reductase reached a maximunm at 4mM nitrate supply. The $V_{max}$of nitrate reductase in leaves of Vernal was similar to that of Victoria, whereas the $K_m$ of Vernal was higher than that of Victoria. High accumulation of leaf nitrate, $4{\times}10^{-5}$ g/g leaf fresh weight, was shown at 12mM nitrate supply, which was thought to be not enough to induce nitrate-toxicity to livestocks.icity to livestocks.

This study was conducted to select the promising varieties of alfalfa (va.) Venal, Ancho., P5444, DK120, DK125, Horizon, DK135, Luna and Kitawacaba at Daekwanryong branch(altitude 800m a.s.l.) and Namwon branch(altitude 450m a.5.1.) of National Livestock Research Institute Leaf width of alfalfa was broad in all varieties except fer Vernal, and DK125 was flowered the earliest of all varieties. Plant height of Luna was the longest, and winter hardness of P5444 was the greatest with 80.2% of all varieties. In Daekwanryong, dry matter(DM) yield of Luna was the highest and DM yield of vernal was the lowest among the varieties in Namwon. In both areas, dry matter yield ef P5444 was the highest of alfalfa varieties. In Daekwanryong, ADF and NDF concentrations of DK 120 were the lowest of all alfalfa varieties. In Namwon, ADF concentrations of Horizon was the lowest with 26%, and NDF concentrations of DK 125 and Horizon was the lowest with 40.8%. Crude protein concentrations of P5444, Luna and DK 120 were higher than that of different varieties in Daekwanryong and crude protein content of Horizon was the highest with 28.1% in Namwon. Average crude protein yield of both areas was the highest of P5444. The results of this study indicated that Luna, Horizon and P5444 would be the promising alfalfa varieties in Daekwanryong, Namwon and both areas, respectively.
Wetlands of Dongbaekdongsan were classified into two types of pond and vernal pool. 11 plant communities are established there such as Nymphoides indica community, Sparganium stoloniferum Community, Persicaria hastato-auriculata community, Scirpus triangulatus community, Triadenum japonica community, Juncus papillosus community, Deinostema violacea community, Centipeda minima community, Apocynum sibiricum community, Isachne globosa community, and Ulmus parvifolia community. Nymphoides indica community is established in a pond located on the entrance of the Dongbaekdongsan and Persicaria hastatoauriculata community appears on edge of the pond. Sparganium stoloniferum community is formed in nearby pond with relatively shallow water and Persicaria hastatoauriculata community is established on margin of the pond. Vernal pools had been used for drinking water source and for livestock in some cases in the past. Scirpus triangulatus community is established in the most wet site as the center of the pools and Juncus papillosus community - Deinostema violacea community - Triadenum japonica community, and Apocynum sibiricum community appear in a concentric circle pattern as far away there. Ulmus parvifolia community is established in a dry vernal pool. This is the first study on vernal pool carried out in Korea. Therefore, most vegetation types are new ones different from existing studies on wetland.
Most parts of alfalfa plant have been reported to contain autotoxic substances that inhibit seed germination and early seedling growth, however, the chemical(s) is not still studied much. Effect of seed leachates of 'Vernal' alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) was evaluated for inhibition of alfalfa germination and root growth through bioassay. Alfalfa seeds were extracted in 1 L deionized water for 1 h after soaking and the leachates caused to reduce root length of alfalfa significantly as the soaking time increased. Crude seeds at 4 g L$L^{-1}$ exudated autotoxins that reduce significantly root length by 34 % compared to the control, when the seeds soaked in deionized water for 24 h. However, the extracts did not affect final germination as well as speed of germination. Extracts from ground seeds significantly reduced speed of germination (GT 50) and root length. The results indicate that release of autotoxic substances from seeds during seed imbibition was increased with increase of soaking time and seed amount, and that autotoxicity was more occurred in ground seeds than in crude seeds.
Reanalysis of the observations of Mars made at the Hida Observatory in 1975 with a new image processing method is reported. Red filter images taken in the period before vernal equinox (areocentric longitude of the sun Ls=$0^{\circ}$) revealed dark surface features at the northern high latitudes, while blue filter images taken at the same time showed the extensive polar hood. The latitude of the northernmost feature observed was about $67^{\circ}$N. An extensive north polar cap, which is predicted by most of the existing models and observed with Viking, did not exist in our reanalyzed images obtained at the Hida Observatory in 1975.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness in the lighting performance of mixed type light-shelf, by comparing and analyzing the internal light-shelf, external light-shelf, and mixed-type light-shelf. The performance of light-shelf was evaluated according to the angle of light-shelf at summer solstice, winter solstice, vernal equinox, and autumn equinox. The comparative analysis between the internal light-shelf, external light-shelf, and mixed-type light-shelf was carried out using the performance evaluation and analysis method. The result of performance evaluation is shown as follows. The mixed type light-shelf showed the highest lighting performance all at summer solstice, winter solstice, vernal equinox, and autumn equinox, followed by the external light-shelf and the internal light-shelf in the same order. The mixed type light-shelf was the most favorable for bringing daylight to indoors by adjusting the angle of light-shelf, and it also showed the highest lighting performance in terms of uniformity ratio of illumination which indicates the quality of light.
The geomagnetic activity shows the semiannual variation stronger in vernal and autumnal equinoxes than in summer and winter solstices. The semiannual variation has been explained by three main hypotheses such as Axial hypothesis, Equinoctial hypothesis, and Russell-McPherron Effect. Many studies using the various geomagnetic indices have done to support three main hypotheses. In recent, Oh & Yi (2011) examined the solar magnetic polarity dependency of the geomagnetic storm occurrence defined by Dst index. They reported that there is no dependency of the semiannual variation on the sign of the solar polar fields. This study examines the solar magnetic polarity dependency of quiet time geomagnetic activity. Using Dxt index (Karinen & Mursula 2005) and Dcx index (Mursula & Karinen 2005) which are recently suggested, in addition to Dst index, we analyze the data of three-year at each solar minimum for eight solar cycles since 1932. As a result, the geomagnetic activity is stronger in the period that the solar magnetic polarity is anti-parallel with the Earth's magnetic polarity. There exists the difference between vernal and autumnal equinoxes regarding the solar magnetic polarity dependency. However, the difference is not statistically significant. Thus, we conclude that there is no solar magnetic polarity dependency of the semiannual variation for quiet time geomagnetic activity.
