Design and Development of Vent Relief Valve for Oxidizer Tank (산화제 탱크용 벤트릴리프밸브 설계 및 개발)

  • A vent relief valve for oxidizer tank has been designed for liquid propellant feeding system of the space launch vehicle. The vent relief valve ensures oxidizer tank ventilation during filling and its protection from overpressure after filling. Tank ventilation during filling is ensured by vent valve and tank protection is ensured by combined operation of relief valve and vent valve. Numerical analysis predicted that pneumatic behavior and dynamic characteristics met the valve requirements. After manufacturing the prototype model, we have been conducting the tests to evaluate the performance of the vent relief valve.

  • A vent relief valve performs as a safety valve, which ensures ventilation of propellant tank during filling and protection from tank overpressure after filling. Because of the reliability and cost saving, the virtually same vent relief valve has been used on all US cryogenic liquid fueled launch vehicles. Some modification to the valve has been applied to satisfy the various mission requirements of launch vehicles. This paper reviews the main technology trends of the vent relief valve applied to the propellant feed system for launch vehicle with respect to design and manufacture. This paper also introduces the operating technology of vent relief valve applied for launch vehicles of advanced countries in space development.

  • A vent-relief valve performs as a safety-valve assembly for liquid propellant feeding system of space launch vehicle, which relives pressurant propellant tanks during the filling and the flight. At vent mode, valve is opened and closed by driving pneumatic pressure, and at relief mode, valve is automatically operated to set relief pressure. In this study, we have analyzed a basic layout of vent-relief valve which is designed using foreign LVs(Saturn) to satisfy requirements of Korean Space Launch Vehicle. The simulation model of vent-relief valve is designed by using the AMESim code to verify design parameters and evaluate pneumatic behaviors of valve. In this study, we performed dynamic characteristic simulations on design parameters. And we could predict opening/closing time and pressures, operating performances on design parameters. Using this results, we could suggest detail design and boundary conditions of design.

  • We have designed the vent relief valve to set bi-level safety pressure for oxidizer tank. The minimum cavity volume was calculated to reduce the pressure deviation, and the valve operation characteristics was analyzed by using modeling. We have a plan to manufacture the validation model based on the analysis results.

  • Vent-relief valve performed as a safety-valve combination for liquid propellant feeding system of space launch vehicle, which can vent the vaporized oxygen vapor during both filling cryogenic oxidizer into tank and flight. We have designed vent-relief model by using the AMESim code to predict dynamic characteristics and simulate pneumatic behavior of valve. To validate valve model we have compared by opening time in vent model, and opening/closing pressure by mathematical methods and improved the accuracy through numerical flow analysis by using FLUENT code. In this study, we had verified design parameters and analyzed operating performances. We can use these analysis results to precedent development study on propellant feeding system of Korea Space Launch Vehicle.

A Study on Standards for Pressure Relief Valve Vent Pipes from LPG Storage Tanks (LPG용 압력방출밸브 방출관 설치기준 개선방안)

  • The dispersion of gas discharged from the vent pipes of pressure relief valves attached LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) storage tank was studied. In general, vent pipes should be positioned so that they discharge vertically upwards in a safe place, and installed so that, in the event of ignition of discharged gas, flame impingement on any vessel, equipment or piping is avoided[1][2]. In Korea, on the other hand, there are various type of the end of vent pipes because there is no rule for discharge directions from the vent pipes. In this paper, we took 4 types of vent directions from the pipes in to account, such as vertically upward, vertically downward, vertically 4-way and horizontally 2-way direction. A software package, FLACS, was adopted to simulate gas dispersion from the vent pipes. We found that vertically downward, vertically 4-way and horizontally 2-way discharge from vent pipes were undesirable to avoid ignition on near ground. Therefore, it was obvious that vertically upward opening of a vent pipe is the best option to discharge in a safe place.

  • We investigated design requirements of vent lines for Sodium-Water Reaction Pressure Relief System of Prototype Generation-IV Sodium-Cooled Fast Reactor. We developed design requirements of areas of the rupture disks of the steam generator, a diameter of the gas vent line of the sodium dump tank, a diameter of the gas vent line of the water dump tank, a diameter of the water dump line of the steam generator. With the design requirements, we calculated the time to vent fluid inside the steam generator and analyzed the transient pressure behavior, also evaluated the close pressure value of the isolation valve of the water dump line. Our results are expected to be used as basis information to design Sodium-Water Reaction Pressure Relief System of Prototype Generation IV Sodium-Cooled Fast Reactor.

  • A ventilation-relief valve performs as a safety-valve assembly for the liquid-propellant feeding system of space launch vehicle. This valve plays a role of relieving the vaporized propellants from propellant tanks during the filling and storing stages of propellants. Also it regulates to maintain the pressure of ullage volume of on-board propellant tanks within the safety-margin during the flight. The simulation model of ventilation-relief valve is designed with AMESim to predict and evaluate the dynamic characteristics and pneumatic behaviors of valve. To validate a valve simulation model, the simulation results of the opening and closing pressures and their operating durations of valve by AMESim analysis are compared with the results of mathematical methods. In addition, the results of internal flow simulation with FLUENT are utilized to improve the accuracy of valve-modeling. This study will serve as one of reference guides to enhance the developmental efficiency of ventilation-relief valves with the various operating conditionss, which shall be used in Korea Space Launch Vehicle-II.

  • In recent, according to the tightening of environment regulation policy, the height of the site of the power plant is increased and the length of the cooling water pipe is increased. This has a serious impact on the stability of the plant. This study analyzes the transient phenomenon using LIQT 7.2, an unsteady state one-dimensional analysis software, to secure the stability of 1,000 MW high-capacity coal-fired power plant cooling water system with high head. To prevent water hammer, The effects on performance characteristics were predicted by individual and combination application. The surge pressure of the cooling water which occurs when the pump was stopped without installing the anti-surge devices was the largest at the pump outlet side. The most effective and simple way to reduce surge pressure in these cooling water systems is to combine a vacuum breaker with a hydraulic non-return valve, which is an essential device for pump protection.
