A general combustion characteristics of forcing nonpremixed jet in laminar flow rates have been conducted experimentally to investigate the effect of forcing amplitude with the resonant frequency of fuel tube. There are two patterns of the flame lift-off feature according to the velocity increasing; one has the decreasing values of forcing amplitude on the lift-off occurrence when a fuel exit velocity is increasing, while the other has the increasing values. These mean that there are the different mechanisms in the lift-off stability of forced jet diffusion flame. Especially, the characteristics of attached jet flame regime are concentrically observed with flame lengths, shapes, flow response and velocity profiles at the nozzle exit as the central figure. The notable observations are that the flame enlogation, in-homing flame and the occurrence of a vortical motion turnabout have happened according to the increase of forcing amplitude. It is understood by the velocity measurements and visualization methods that these phenomena have been relevance to an entrainment of surrounding oxygen into the fuel nozzle as the negative part of the fluctuating velocity has begun at the inner part of the fuel nozzle.

Velocity profiles of laminar, transition and turbulent boundary layers were investigated by using Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV) measurements on the flat plate at Mach 2.96. The Schlieren visualization and PIV measurements are also used to confirm whether the oblique shock wave generated from the leading edge affects the flow field over the flat plate. The laminar velocity profile measured from the experiment was well matched with the compressible Blasius solution. The velocity profile of the transition boundary layer was well correlated with the theoretical turbulent velocity profile from near the wall and the transition began from Re = $1.41{\times}106$. For the turbulent boundary layer, considering compressibility effects, the Van Driest-transformed velocity satisfies the incompressible log-law. It is found that the log region is extended farther in the wall-normal direction compared to the log region in incompressible boundary layer.

In the present study, the flow characteristics of developing laminar oscillatory flows in a square -sectional 180 deg. curved duct are investigated experimentally. The experimental study using air in a square-sectional 180 deg. curved duct is carried out to measure velocity distributions with a data acquisition and LDV (Laser Doppler Velocimetry) processing system. In this system, Rotating Machinery Resolver (RMR) and PHASE program are used to obtain the results of unsteady flows. The major flow characteristics of developing oscillatory flows are found by analyzing velocity curves, mean velocity profiles, time-averaged velocity distribution of secondary flow, wall shear stress distributions, and entrance lengths. In a lower dimensionless angular frequency, the axial velocity distribution of laminar oscillatory flow in a curved duct shows a convex shape in a central part and axial symmetry. The maximum value of wall shear stress in a lower dimensionless angular frequency is located in an outside wall, but according to increasing the dimensionless angular frequency, the maximum of wall shear stress is moved to inner wall. The entrance lengths of laminar oscillatory flows in a square-sectional 180 deg. curved duct is obtained to 90 deg. of bended angle of duct in this experimental conditions.

Ultrasonic backward radiation profile is frequency-dependent when the incident region has deptional gradient of acoustical properties or multi-layers. Until now, we have measured the profiles of principal frequencies of an used transducers so that it was not easy to characterize the frequency dependence of the SAW(surface acoustic wave) from the backward radiation profile. We tried to measure the spectral backward radiation profiles using DFP(digital filer package) in a Lecroy DSO(digital storage oscilloscope). The measured spectral profiles showed that the steel specimen of #1200 surface treatment have 2% SAW velocity dispersion of the loaded case and the severly rusty steel specimen have the very big changes in the shape and pattern of the spectral profile. It is concluded that the spectral backward radiation profiles could be very effective tool to evaluate the frequency dependence of surface area.
The objective of this study is to estimate the distribution of a zone disturbed by excavation (EDZ) around tunnels that have been excavated at about 500 m depth in pre-Tertiary hard sedimentary rock. One of the most important tasks is to evaluate changes in the dynamic stability and permeability of the rock around the tunnels, by investigating the properties of the rock after the excavation. We performed resistivity and acoustic tomography using two boreholes, 5 m in length, drilled horizontally from the wall of a tunnel in pre-Tertiary hard conglomerate. By these methods, we detected a low-resistivity and low-velocity zone 1 m in thickness around the wall of the tunnel. The resulting profiles were verified by permeability and evaporation tests performed at the same boreholes. This anomalous zone matched a high-permeability zone caused by open fractures. Next, we performed resistivity monitoring along annular survey lines in a tunnel excavated in pre-Tertiary hard shale by a tunnel-boring machine (TBM). We detected anomalous zones in 2D resistivity profiles surrounding the tunnel. A low-resistivity zone 1 m in thickness was detected around the tunnel when one year had passed after the excavation. However, two years later, the resistivity around the tunnel had increased in a portion, about 30 cm in thickness, of this zone. To investigate this change, we studied the relationship between groundwater flow from the surroundings and evaporation from the wall around the tunnel. These features were verified by the relationship between the resistivity and porosity of rocks obtained by laboratory tests on core samples. Furthermore, the profiles matched well with highly permeable zones detected by permeability and evaporation tests at a horizontal borehole drilled near the survey line. We conclude that the anomalous zones in these profiles indicate the EDZ around the tunnel.
Spectral line profiles of filaments/prominences to be observed by the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph (FISS) are studied. The main spectral lines of interests are $H{\alpha}$, Ca II 8542, and Ca II K. FISS has a high spectral resolving power of $2{\times}10^5$, and supports simultaneous dual-band recording. This instrument will be installed at the 1.6m New Solar Telescope (NST) of Big Bear Solar Observatory, which has a high spatial resolution of 0.065" at 500nm. Adopting the cloud model of radiative transfer and using the model parameters inferred from pre-existing observations, we have simulated a set of spectral profiles of the lines that are emitted by a filament on the disk or a prominence at the limb. Taking into account the parameters of the instrument, we have estimated the photon count to be recorded by the CCD cameras, the signal-to-noise ratios, and so on. We have also found that FISS is suitable for the study of multi-velocity threads in filaments if the spectral profiles of Ca II lines are recorded together with $H{\alpha}$ lines.
Plasma actuator makes parallel flow on the wall surface by the interaction between plasma and neutral air particles. Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma actuator is widely studied as one type of plasma actuators, which consists of one electrode exposed to the environmental gas and the other encapsulated by a dielectric material. This paper is experimentally focused on the performance of DBD plasma actuator mounted on a flat plate, which depends on kinds of the electrode materials, their thicknesses and the supplied voltage including its frequency. We measured the velocity magnitudes of the induced flow by a stagnation probe as a performance parameter of the plasma actuators. The velocity profiles of the flow induced by the plasma actuators are similar in all measurement cases. The magnitude of the induced velocity is strongly influenced by the thickness of the electrodes and the frequency of the input voltage. The performance of DBD plasma actuators is related to the electric properties of the electrode materials such as the ionization energy and the electrical resistivity.

Experimental study was performed to investigate the flow behavior in boundary layer on the blade suction surface of a multi-stage axial flow compressor, which was focused on the third stage of the 4-stage Low Speed Research Compressor. Flow measurements in the boundary layer were obtained using a boundary layer hot wire probe, which was traversed normal to the blade suction surface at small increments by the probe traverse specially designed. Detailed boundary layer flow measurements covering most of the stator suction surface were taken and are described using time mean and ensemble averaged velocity profiles. Amplitude of the velocity fluctuation and turbulence intensity in the boundary layer flow are also discussed. At midspan, narrow but strong wake zone due to passing wake disturbances is generated in the boundary layer near the blade leading edge for the rotor blade passing period. Corner separation is observed at the tip region near the trailing edge, which causes to increase steeply the boundary layer thickness.

Conventional yaw functions are compared with actual response of a hot wire to various yaw angles, and a new function is proposed, which can be applied at large yaw angles and low velocities. To compare the accuracy of the new yaw function with those of the conventional ones, measurements are made for the jet flow at the nozzle exit and at .chi./D=15 with an X hot-wire probe. In the potential core, the flow angles reduced by the present function, ideal angle method and full velocity-angle method are shown to be more accurate than those reduced by the cosine function and Hinze's formula. No matter which yaw functions are used, the profiles of mean velocity and turbulence intensity show little discrepancy at .chi./D=15. However, there is a significant difference between the probability density functions obtained by the present function, ideal angle method and full velocity-angle method and those obtained by the cosine function and Hinze's formula.

Drawing is a mechanical operation attenuating material thickness to an appropriate level for the next processing or end usage. When the input material has a form of bundle or bundles made of very thin and long shaped wires or fibers, this attenuation operation is called 'bundle drawing' or 'drafting'. Bundle drawing is being used widely in manufacturing micro sized wires or staple yarns. However, the bundle processed by this operation has more or less defects in the evenness of linear density. Such irregularities cause many problems not only for the product quality but also for the efficiency of the next successive processes. In this research a mathematical model for the dynamic behavior of the bundle fluid is to be set up on the basis of general physical laws containing physical variables, i.e. linear density and velocity as the dynamic state variables of the bundle fluid. The governing equations resulting from the modeling show that they appear in a slightly different form from what they do in a continuum fluid. Then, the governing equations system is simplified in a steady state and the bundle dynamics is simulated, showing that the shape of the velocity profiles depends on two model parameters. Experiments confirm that the model parameters are to be well adjusted to show a coincidence with the theoretical analysis. The higher the drawing ratio and drawing speed we, the more sensitive becomes the bundle flow to exogenous disturbances.
