  • Given high accretion rates close to the Eddington limit, narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1) are arguably the most important AGN subclass in investigating the origin of the black hole mass-galaxy stellar velocity dispersion ($M_{BH}-{\sigma}$) relation. Currently, it is highly debated whether NLS1s are offset from the local $M_{BH}-{\sigma}$ relation. The controversy mainly comes from the fact that the [OIII] line width has been used as a proxy for stellar velocity dispersion due to the difficulty of measuring stellar velocity dispersion in NLS1s. Using the SDSS spectra of a sample of 105 NLS1, we performed multi-component fitting analysis to separate stellar absorption lines from strong AGN [FeII] complex in order to directly measure stellar velocity dispersion. We will present the result of decomposition analysis and discuss whether NLS1s follow the same $M_{BH}-{\sigma}$ relation based on the direct measurements of stellar velocity dispersion.

  • We have established a database of galaxy spectral line strengths for the SDSS database using an improved line measuring method. Our work includes the entire SDSS DR7 galaxies within redshift of 0.2. The absorption line strengths measured by the SDSS pipeline are seriously contaminated by emission filling. Our code, GANDALF (gas and absorption line fitting code) performs more accurate measurements by effectively separating emission lines from absorption lines. A significant improvement has also been made on the velocity dispersion measurement, more notably in late-type galaxies. We have also identified a number of broad line region galaxies which were misclassified as normal galaxies by the SDSS pipeline. We developed an effective method measuring their line strengths. The database will be provided with new parameters that are indicative of the line strength measurement quality. In addition, we made galaxy templates for the Hubble sequence. The database will be useful for many fields of galaxy studies including star formation and AGN activities.

  • Energetic ionized gas outflows driven by active galactic nuclei (AGN) have been studied as a key phenomenon related to AGN feedback. To probe the kinematics of the gas in the narrow line region, [O III] ${\lambda}5007$ has been utilized in a number of studies, showing non-virial kinematic properties due to AGN outflows. We statistically investigate whether the $H{\alpha}$ emission line is influenced by AGN driven outflows, by measuring the kinematic properties based on the $H{\alpha}$ line profile, and by comparing them with those of [O III]. Using the spatially integrated spectra of ~37,000 Type 2 AGNs at z < 0.3 selected from the SDSS DR7, we find a non-linear correlation between $H{\alpha}$ velocity dispersion and stellar velocity dispersion, which reveals the presence of the non-gravitational component, especially for AGNs with a wing component in $H{\alpha}$. The large $H{\alpha}$ velocity dispersion and velocity shift of luminous AGNs are clear evidence of AGN outflow impacts on $H{\alpha}$ emitting gas, while relatively smaller kinematic properties compared to those of [O III] imply that the observed outflow effect on the $H{\alpha}$ line is weaker than the case of [O III].

  • Energetic gas outflows from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) may have a crucial role in galaxy evolution. In this contribution, we present a census of ionized gas outflows using a large sample (~23,000) of local (z < 0.1) type-2 AGNs selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR 7. By measuring the velocity offset of narrow emission lines, i.e., [O III] ${\lambda}5007$ and the Balmer lines, with respect to the systemic velocity measured from the stellar absorption lines, we find ~47% of AGNs showing an [O III] line-of-sight velocity offset ${\geq}20km\;s-1$. The fraction in type-2 AGNs is similar to that in type-1 AGNs after considering the projection effect. AGNs with larger [O III] velocity offsets, in particular with no or weak $H{\alpha}$ velocity offsets, tend to have higher Eddington ratios, implying that the [O III] velocity offset is related to on-going black hole activity. Also, we find the different distributions of the host galaxy inclination between the AGNs with blueshifted [O III] and the AGNs with redshifted [O III], supporting the model of biconical outflow with dust obscuration. Meanwhile, for ~3% of AGNs, [O III] and $H{\alpha}$ exhibit comparable large velocity offsets, suggesting a more complex gas kinematics than decelerating outflows in the narrow-line region.

  • This paper presents an image processing technique to get traffic information such as vehicle volume, velocity, and occupancy for measuring the traffic congestion rate. To obtain these information, two horizontal lines are previously set on the screen. A moving vehicle is detected using the gray level difference on each line, and also template matching method at night. Threshold values are determined by sampling pavement grey level, and updated dynamically to cope with the change of ambient light conditions. These technique is successfully used to calculate vehicle volume, occupancy, and velocity. This study can be applied to traffic signal control system for minimizing traffic congestion in urban areas.

  • It is well-known that the parameters of dynamic fracture mechanics depend not only on dimensions, loading and boundary conditions but also on the dynamic crack propagation velocity. Because the measurement of dynamic crack propagation velocity measuring device which can easily be expanded without modification is proposed in this report. it was found that the experimentally determined dynamic crack propagation velocity agreed well with those from other investigations in some polymers such as PMMA. Homalite-100 and Epoxy.

  • Determining the virial factor of the broad-line region (BLR) gas is crucial in calibrating AGN black hole mass estimators, since the measured line-of-sight velocity needs to be converted into the representative velocity of the BLR gas. The unknown virial factor has been empirically calibrated based on the $M_{BH}-{\sigma}_*$ relation of non-AGN galaxies, but the claimed values are different by a factor of 2 in recent studies. We investigate the origin of the difference by measuring the $M_{BH}-{\sigma}_*$ relation using the most updated nearby galaxy sample, and explore the dependence of the virial factor on the various fitting methods. We find that the discrepancy is mostly caused by the sample bias while the difference stemming from various regression methods is marginal. Based on the best-determined virial factor, we present the updated $M_{BH}-{\sigma}_*$ relation of local active galaxies.

  • The purpose of the present experimental study is to apply multi-point simultaneous measurement by PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) to high-speed flow region within a domestic boiler circulation pump. Two different kinds of flow rate($27{\ell}/min,\;19{\ell}/min$)are selected as experimental condition. A volute casing and Impeller made of transparent Polycarbonate were made for the easy access of the illumination laser via fiber optical line and cylinder lens assembly to the measuring region. A CCD camera is syncronized with AOM to acquire clear original particle images. Optimized cross correlation identification to obtain velocity vectors is implemented by direct calculation of correlation coefficients. The instantaneous and time-mean velocity distribution, velocity profile and kinetic energy are represented quantitatively at the full-scale region for the deeper understanding of the unsteady flow characteristics in a commercial circulation pump.

  • In a water treatment process a complete and homogeneous dispersion of the coagulants in the raw water could be most important factor. This research was performed to evaluate coagulation performance of the in-line-orifice mixer which was recently introduced as a rapid mixing device. The test was to determine the actual coagulant dispersion distribution on the overall cross-section at a distance of 1.6~3D from the chemical injection point by measuring zeta potential. From the results of zeta potential test, it was shown that the coagulant dispersion within the in-line orifice mixer was occurred very unevenly. The results have confirmed that it is necessary to increase the velocity of coagulants injection or pressurized water rates, in order to reduce nonuniform distribution of chemicals.

  • The modulation transfer function (MTF) in a camera system is a measurement of how well the system will faithfully reproduce the original scene. The electro-optical camera system consists of optics, an array of pixels, and an electronics which is related to the image signal chain. The system MTF can be cascaded with each element's MTF in the frequency domain. That is to say, the electronics MTF including the detector MTF can be recalculated easily by the acquired system MTF if the well-known test optics is used in the measuring process. A Time-Delay and Integration (TDI) detector can make a signal increase by taking multiple exposures of the same object and adding them. It can be considered the various methods to measure the MTF of the TDI camera system. This paper shows the actual and practical MTF measuring methods for the detector and electronics in the TDI camera. The several methods are described according to the scan direction as well as the TDI stages such as the single line mode and the multiple-lines mode. The measuring is performed in the in the static condition or dynamic condition to get the point spread function (PSF) or the line spread function (LSF). Especially, the dynamic test bench is used to simulate on track velocity to synchronize with TDI read out frequency for the dynamic movement.
