  • A new output feedback controller design approach for flexible-joint (FJ) robots via the observer dynamic surface design technique is presented. The proposed approach only requires the feedback of position states. We first design an observer to estimate the link and actuator velocity information. Then, the link position tracking controller using the observer dynamic surface design procedure is developed. Therefore, the proposed controller can be simpler than the observer backstepping controller. From the Lyapunov stability analysis, it is shown that all signals in a closed-loop system are uniformly ultimately bounded. Finally, the simulation results of a three-link FJ robot are presented to validate the good position tracking performance of the proposed control system.

  • In this paper, we propose an output feedback tracking control method for the wheeled mobile robots with kinematic disturbances. The kinematic disturbances should be compensated to avoid the performance degradation. Also, the unavailable velocity of the mobile robot should be estimated. These should be estimated together by designing the nonlinear observer. Based on these estimates, the output feedback controller can be designed. The stability of the mobile robot control systems using the proposed method is rigorously analyzed and the simulation results are also provided to validate the proposed method.

  • Motivated by the fact that in many industrial robots the joint velocity is estimated from position measurements, the trajectory tracking of robot manipulators with output feedback is addressed in this paper. The fact that robot actuators have limited power is also taken into account. Let us notice that few solutions for the torque-bounded output feedback tracking control problem have been proposed. In this paper we contribute to this subject by presenting a theoretical reexamination of a known controller, by using the theory of singularly perturbed systems. Motivated by this analysis, a redesign of that controller is introduced. As another contribution, we present an experimental evaluation in a two degrees-of-freedom revolute-joint direct-drive robot, confirming the practical feasibility of the proposed approach.

  • This paper presents extended state feedback control based on impulse response for lane change of autonomous driving vehicle. The triple characteristic root of path tracking system and longitudinal velocity determine feedback gains. We suggest a resemblance of impulse response curve of the system and lane change trajectory of the vehicle. The root affects the duration of lane change and lateral acceleration. The effect of limited lateral acceleration and saturation of steering angle will be analyzed and discussed. Finally, simulation results will show the trajectory of lane change based on impulse response under limitation of lateral acceleration.

  • Using a large sample of 32,000 type 2 AGNs out to z = 0.2, we present the statistical results on the ionized gas outflows, based on the analysis of the velocity shift of narrow emission lines with respect to the systemic velocity measured from the stellar absorption lines. Considering the projection effect, the fraction of type 2 AGNs with the [O III] velocity offset, which is ~50%, is comparable to that of type 1 AGNs. The velocity dispersion of [OIII] is typically larger than that of Ha, suggesting that outflow is prevalent in type 2 AGNs. A weak correlation of the OIII luminosity with velocity shift and velocity dispersion indicates that outflow velocity is stronger for higher luminosity AGNs. Based on our 3-D biconical outflow models with simple assumptions on the velocity structure, we simulate the projected 2-D velocity and velocity dispersion maps, which are spatially integrated to reproduce the measurements of SDSS AGNs. By comparing the distribution of the measured velocity and velocity dispersion of OIII, with the model grids, we constrain the intrinsic outflow velocities. The outflow velocity ranges from a few hundreds to a thousand km/s, implying a strong feedback to ISM.

  • The velocity measurement error in the velocity-aided SDINS on the maneuvering vehicle is unavoidable and degrades the performance of the SDINS. The characteristics of the velocity measurement error can be modeled as a random bias. This paper proposes a new method for estimating the velocity measurement error in the SDINS. The generalized likelihood ratio test is used for detecting the error and a modified separate-bias Kalman filter in the feedback configuration is suggested for estimating the magnitude of the velocity measurement error.

  • This paper presents an active vibration control of cantilever beams under disturbances by a primary force. A direct velocity feedback control using a pair of PZT actuator and a velocity sensor is considered. Variation of the stability and performance with the locations of the sensor/actuator pair is investigated. It is found that the maximum gain varies with the locations of the sensor/actuator pair significantly. The maximum gain shows a symmetric distribution along the beam length with respect to the center point, although the boundary condition of the beam is unsymmetric. The control performance is affected by the location of the primary force as well as the location of the sensor/actuator pair. The active control system can more effectively reduce the vibration when the primary force is located close to the fixed boundary.

  • This paper presents an underwater hybrid navigation system for a semi-autonomous underwater vehicle (SAUV). The navigation system consists of an inertial measurement unit (IMU), and a Doppler velocity log (DVL), accompanied by a magnetic compass. The errors of inertial measurement units increase with time, due to the bias errors of gyros and accelerometers. A navigational system model is derived, to include the scale effect and bias errors of the DVL, of which the state equation composed of the navigation states and sensor parameters is 20. The conventional extended Kalman filter was used to propagate the error covariance, update the measurement errors, and correct the state equation when the measurements are available. Simulation was performed with the 6-d.o,f equations of motion of SAUV, using a lawn-mowing survey mode. The hybrid underwater navigation system shows good tracking performance, by updating the error covariance and correcting the system's states with the measurement errors from a DVL, a magnetic compass, and a depth sensor. The error of the estimated position still slowly drifts in the horizontal plane, about 3.5m for 500 seconds, which could be eliminated with the help of additional USBL information.

  • The sway control problem of pendulum motion of a container hanging on a Portainer Crane, which transports containers from a container ship to trucks, is considered in the paper. The equations of motion are obtained through the Lagrange mechanics and simplified for control purposes. Considering that the fast traveling of trolley and no residual swing motion of the container at the end of acceleration and deceleration are crucial for quick transportation, several velocity patterns of trolley movement including the time-optimal control are investigated. Incorporating the change of rope length, a reference swing trajectory is introduced in the control loop and the error signal between the reference sway angle and the measured sway angle is feedbacked. Proposed control strategy is shown to be robust to disturbances like winds and initial sway motion.
