  • A particle image velocimetry is the representative technique for measuring flow velocities at whole field simultaneously. The present study adopted the PTV method for velocity acquisition in a square enclosure with initially isothermal fluid by using a general lamp-based sheet light source. The enclosure was composed of hot and cold vertical wall and was confined by two horizon-tal adiabatic walls. The drift velocities were measured and the drift was visualized by PTV for a rayleigh number of 5.28{\times}10^8.$ Obtained instant simulataneous velocity vectors show flow pattern and the result of horizontal velocity profile agree well with the numerical result.

  • This paper studies the error of pressure, particle velocity, and intensity which are distributed in a space. Errors may be amplified when other sound field variables are predicted. We theoretically derive their bias error and random error. The analysis shows that many samples do not always guarantee good results. Random error of the velocity and intensity are increased when many samples are used. The characteristics of the amplification of the random error are analyzed in terms of the sample spacing. The amplification was found to be related to the spatial differential of random noise. The numerical simulations are performed to verify theoretical results.

  • Insight into behaviour of pedestrians as well as tools to assess passenger flow conditions are important in for instance planning and geometric design of railway station under regular and safety-critical circumstances. Algorithm for passenger flow analysis based on DEM(Discrete Element Method) is newly developed. There are lots of similarity between particle-laden two phase flow and passenger flow. The velocity component of 1st phase corresponds to the unit vector of calculation cell, each particle to passenger, volume fraction to population density and the particle velocity to the walking velocity, etc. And, the walking velocity of passenger is also represented by the function of population density. Key algorithms are developed to determine the position of passenger, population density and numbering to each passenger. To verify the effectiveness of new algorithm, passenger flow analysis for the basic models of railway station is conducted.

  • Effects of porous wind fences on the wind erosion of particles from a triangular sand pile were investigated experimentally. The porous fence and sand pile were installed in a simulated atmospheric boundary layer. The mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles measured at the sand pile location were well fitted to the atmospheric boundary layer over the open terrain. Flow visualization was carried out to investigate the motion of windblown sand particles qualitatively. In addition, the threshold velocity were measured using a light sensitive video camera with varying the particle size, fence porosity $\varepsilon$ and the height of sand pile. As a result, various types of particle motion were observed according to the fence porosity. The porous wind fence having porosity $\varepsilon$=30% was revealed to have the maximum threshold velocity, indicating good shelter effect for abating windblown dust particles. With increasing the sand particle diamter, the threshold velocity was also increased. When the height of sand pile is lower than the fence height, threshold velocity is enhanced.

  • In this study, the mixing process of two-phase flow generated by two jets with height difference is analyzed. The primary jet is jetted on the condition of the state mixed pulverized solid particles with air. The height difference between the main jet and the secondary jet is changed into three kinds(0, 32.5, 47.5mm). The velocity vector field, concentration field and turbulent properties of solid particles are measured by using 3-Dimensional Particles Dynamics Analyzer. As the height difference of two jets through the two nozzles increases, the solid particle recirculation zone and the dense zone in the combustion chamber become large. The solid particle concentration at the center of the combustion chamber gets dense because the particle velocity remains slow due to the existence of the solid particle recirculation zone. The particle concentration in the combustion chamber can also be influenced by the hight difference of two jets.

  • A feasibility of using Particle Entrainment Simulator (PES) to evaluate model variables describing sediment entrainment in a river system was investigated. PES in a laboratory was utilized to simulate the sediment resuspension phenomenon in the river and the subsequent relationship between shear rate and sediment entrainment was developed. The total suspended solids (TSS) data from PES was incorporated into statistical models in an effort to describe behaviors of net particle movement in the river. PES was found to be adequate for simulating particle entrainment phenomenon in a river system. Statistical analysis was used to assess propriety of PES data for predictive purposes. The results showed good relationships between PES results and system variables, such as average stream velocity and net particle movement.

  • In kinetic spraying process, the critical velocity is an important criterion which determines the deposition of a feedstock particle onto the substrate. In other studies, it was experimentally and numerically proven that the critical velocity is determined by the physical and mechanical properties and the state of materials such as initial temperature, size and the extent of oxidation. Compared to un-oxidized feedstock, oxidized feedstock required a greater kinetic energy of in-flight particle to break away oxide film during impact. The oxide film formed on the surface of particle and substrate is of a relatively higher brittleness and hardness than those of general metals. Because of its physical characteristics, the oxide significantly affected the deposition behavior and critical velocity. In this study, in order to investigate the effects of oxidation on the deposition behavior and critical velocity of feedstock, oxygen contents of Al feedstock were artificially controlled, individual particle impact tests were carried out and the velocities of in-flight Al feedstock was measured for a wide range of process gas conditions. As a result, as the oxygen contents of Al feedstock increased, the critical velocity increased.

  • The flow at the top surface of the hopper is of particular industrial interest. Previously, the velocity distribution inside the hopper was predicted using the simple, void and spot models, which are equations for the particle flow field. However, because these equations cannot predict the velocity distribution at the top surface, a new equation has been recently proposed. This study employed the discrete element method with the changed shape of the particles. Based on the results, the shape of the particle had no effect on the discharge angle and shape of the velocity distribution; however, it greatly affected the size of the velocity distribution and bed thickness of the flowing particles. Therefore, in the future, it is necessary to modify the theoretical equation by considering the shape of the particles.

  • The particle image velocimetry with liquid crystal tracers is used for visualizing and analysis of the bubbly flow in a vertical temperature gradient. This method allows simultaneous measurement of velocity and temperature field at a given instant of time Quantitative data of velocity were obtained by applying the MQD technique to visualized image. The paper describes the method, and presents the transient velocity patterns of bubbly flow.
