  • The main aim of this study was to suppress the angular velocity against strong winds during storms and analyze the stability and performance of the phase plane method. The utilization of small-scale wind turbine system has become common in agriculture, houses, etc. Therefore, it is considered to be a scheme for preserving the natural energy or avoiding the use of fossil fuels. Moreover, settling small-scaled wind turbines is simpler and more acceptable compared to ordinary huge wind turbines. In addition, after converting the energy there is no requirement for distribution. Therefore, a much lower cost can be expected for small-scaled wind turbines. On the other hand, this system cannot be operated continuously because the small-scaled wind turbine consists of a small blade that has low inertia momentum. Therefore, it may exceed the boundary of angular velocity, which may cause a fault in the system due to the centrifugal force. The aim of this study was to reduce the angular velocity by controlling the stall factor. Stall factor control consists of two control methods. One is a shock absorber that is loaded in the junction of the axis of the blade of the wind turbine gear wheel and the other is pitch angle control. Basically, the stall factor itself exhibits nonlinear behavior. Therefore, this paper confirmed the feasibility of stall factor control in producing desirable performance whilst maintaining stability.

  • In this study a path control scheme of simulation models of various vehicles to evaluate their handling characteristic is developed. Based on the forward target method, path deviation error is estimated and the required steering effort to reduce the error is computed by Ziegler-Nichols PID control rule. Velocity control model is also included in the proposed path control scheme to achieve the desired velocity. The path control scheme is implemented on a full vehicle model to perform ISO test procedures, such as steady state cornering, lane change, and sinusoidal input, etc. Through the simulations of ISO test procedures and comparison with actual tests, effectiveness and validity of the path control model is demonstrated.

  • This paper presents a hierarchical trajectory planning method which can handle a collision-free of the planned path in complex and dynamic environments. A PV (Path & Velocity profile) planning method minimizes a sharp change of orientation and waiting time to avoid a collision with moving obstacle through detour path. The path generation problem is solved by three steps. In the first step, a smooth global path is generated using $A^*$ algorithm. The second step sets up the velocity profile for the optimization problem considering the maximum velocity and acceleration. In the third step, the velocity profile for obtaining the shortest path is optimized using the fuzzy and genetic algorithm. To show the validity and effectiveness of the proposed method, realistic simulations are performed.

  • This article presents a new acceleration/deceleration method for real-time control of autonomous mobile robots. In this method, a function which produces the table of acceleration/deceleration in real-time is proposed. This function, while sat- isfying the basic concept of mechanics, can choose both various ranges of velocity and distance ranges for the selected velocities. Moreover it can control motors in real time. This function is convenient to be realized by programming. In addi- tion, it is faster than other functions because it can be written by assembly language.

  • The finite control volume method was utilized to investigate the effects of flow through openings on convection in an enclosure. Flow patterns and temperature distribution were compared for non-dimensional inflow velocity U=20, 40, 60 at Ra=$10^4$ and $5\times10^4$, respectively. The inflow velocity influenced temperature distribution in the enclosure significantly and lowered temperature on the top wall. The flow through openings forced the position of the highest temperature on the top wall to move toward the outflow opening.

  • In order to properly manage the river water use, it is necessary to collect reliable data of river water use. However, It is not easy to get credible river water use data in Korea because there are some difficultites in reporting and measuring river water use data. Thus, Han River Flood Control Office has installed and operated measuring facility using V-ADCP on the EOUBO intake open channel in the Gosan-Bongdong station section of the Mankyung river, where the use of agricultural water is large. In this study, the applicability of the V-ADCP velocity profile method was evaluated for real-time river water use. For this reason, the parameter sensitivity of Chiu's 2D velocity distribution equation was analyzed and the optimal parameters based on actual discharge data were calculated. In addition, the characteristics of the velocity profile method were analyzed by comparative evaluation of the rating curve method and the index velocity method.

  • The aircraft vertical acceleration from the excitation of the road surface in the taxing mode is a main factor with a negative effect on the boarding quality of pilots and passengers. In this paper, we propose an appropriate control method to improve the boarding quality of the MR damper landing gear. The proposed control method is Skyhook Control Type 2, which feeds the aircraft vertical acceleration back in addition to the aircraft vertical velocity. Since Skyhook Control Type 2 factors the velocity and acceleration of the upper mass, it can be expected to exceed the control performance of the existing Skyhook Control that factors only the upper mass velocity. For the simulation, the bumper type road surface was selected as a ground surface, and the landing gear model constructed with RecurDyn and the controller designed with Simulink were co-simulated. The control effect of Skyhook Control Type 2 was verified by comparing and analyzing the RMS and maximum value of the upper mass acceleration according to the taxing speed and control method.

  • The velocity measurement error in the velocity-aided SDINS on the maneuvering vehicle is unavoidable and degrades the performance of the SDINS. The characteristics of the velocity measurement error can be modeled as a random bias. This paper proposes a new method for estimating the velocity measurement error in the SDINS. The generalized likelihood ratio test is used for detecting the error and a modified separate-bias Kalman filter in the feedback configuration is suggested for estimating the magnitude of the velocity measurement error.

  • In a previous study, the authors have proposed the Cooperative Collision Avoidance (CCA) method which enables mobile robots to cooperatively avoid collisions, by extending the concept of the Velocity Obstacle to multiple robot systems. The method introduced an evaluation function considering an operation objective so that each robot can choose the velocity which optimizes the function. As the evaluation function could be of an arbitrary type, this method is applicable to a wide variety of tasks. However, it complicates the optimization of the function especially in real-time. In addition, construction of the evaluation function requires an operation objective of the other robot which is very hard to obtain without communication. In this paper, the CCA method is improved considering such problems for implementation. To decrease computational costs, the previous method is simplified by introducing two essential assumptions. Then, by treating the desired direction of locomotion for each robot as the operation objective, an operation objective estimator which estimates the desired direction of the other robot is introduced. The only measurement required is the other robot's relative position, since the other information can be obtained through the estimation. Hence, communicational devices that are necessary for most other cooperative methods are not required. Moreover, mobile robots employing the method can avoid collisions with uncooperative robots or moving obstacles as well as with cooperative robots. Consequently, this improved method can be applied to general dynamic environments consisting of various mobile robots.

  • An experimental study was conducted to investigate the influence of the spinning control cylinders which was set on the surface of a fixed circular cylinder in uniform flow, $Re=1.24\times10^4$. The measurements of velocity vectors and pressure distributions are carried out in various spin parameters and angles of spinning control cylinder. The results show that velocity profiles and pressure distributions are different with angles of control cylinder and spin parameters. When the control cylinder angle is $100^{\circ}$, there is more effect in increasing the velocity and the pressure distribution than other cases. In this case, the vortex shedding frequency was increased as increasing spin parameter.
