Passive Transient Voltage Suppression Devices for 42-Volt Automotive Electrical Systems

  • New 42-volt automotive electrical systems can provide significant improvements in vehicle performance and fuel economy. It is crucial to provide protection against load dump and other overvoltage transients in 42-volt systems. While advanced active control techniques are generally considered capable of providing such protection, the use of passive transient voltage suppression (TVS) devices as a secondary or supplementary protection means can significantly improve design flexibility and reduce system costs. This paper examines the needs and options for passive TVS devices for 42-volt applications. The limitations of the commonly available automotive TVS devices, such as Zener diodes and metal oxide varistors (MOV), are analyzed and reviewed. A new TVS device concept, based on power MOSFET and thin-film polycrystalline silicon back-to-back diode technology, is proposed to provide a better control on the clamp voltage and meet the new 42-volt specification. Both experimental and modeling results are presented. Issues related to the temperature dependence and energy absorbing capability of the new TVS device are discussed in detail. It is concluded that the proposed TVS device provides a cost-effective solution for load dump protection in 42-volt systems.

  • 최근 연료 가격의 상승으로 자동차용 연료에 벤젠, 톨루엔 등을 혼합한 가짜휘발유가 많이 유통되고 있다. 가짜휘발유는 벤젠, 톨루엔 등의 방향족물질을 혼합하거나 경유, 등유 등을 혼합하여 사용한다. 방향족 화합물이 많이 함유된 휘발유를 장기간 사용할 경우 차량의 고무부품을 팽윤시켜 연료의 누출 등에 따른 화재 발생의 가능성이 높으며, 톨루엔은 열함량이 작기 때문에 연소효율 저하로 연비를 악화시킨다. 또한 자동차 연료의 조성은 배출가스에도 많은 영향을 주는 것으로 알려져 있다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 가짜휘발유 사용에 따른 배출가스 영향을 정확히 파악하기 위해 휘발유 중 방향족 함량이 다른 세종류의 연료를 사용하여 배출가스 및 연비에 대한 영향을 조사하였다. Exhaust Emission Characteristics of in-use Passenger Cars Equipped with Three-way Catalyst (운행중인 삼원촉매부착 승용차의 오염물질 배출특성)

  • As exhaust emission standards for new passenger cars amended in 1987 have become more stringent, vehicle manufacturers have employed three-way catalyst in order to meet these requirements. The purpose of this study was to gather informations on new emission control systems in customer use for in-use vehicles from the 1987 through 1992 model years were capable of achieving low exhaust emission levels although high levels do occur due to defects, deterioration or maladjustments with the emission control equipment. The vehicles with closed loop electronic control fuel injection system emitted low exhaust emission, but the carburetor control system equipped vehicles emitted high exhaust emissions and the high mileage vehicles exhibited higher average emissions than low mileage vehicles. It was also found that the useful life of 80, 000km is very important to maintain the low emission levels within customer service period.

  • The functions of a mobile robot such as obstacle knowledge and collision avoidance for in-door cleaning are necessary features, as has been much studied in the field of industrial automatic guided vehicle or general mobile robot. A mobile robot, in order to avoid collision with obstacles, has to gather data with environment knowledge sensors and recognize environment and the shape of obstacles from the data. In the study, a wall-following algorithm was suggested as a autonomous moving algorithm in which a mobile robot can recognize obstacles in indoor like environment and do cleaning work in effect. The system suggested in the study is for cleaning of nuclear material dusts generated in the process of nuclear fuel manufacturing and decontamination of devices in disorder which is performed in M6 radioactive ray shield hot-cell in IMEF(Irradiated Material Examination Facility) in the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute.

  • Recently, the interest in technologies for a highly efficient powertrain, i.e. a variable displacement engine or a light weight car body, to improve the fuel efficiency of automobile saving the environment has been increased. However this trend deteriorates NVH performance of a vehicle and the use of a conventional engine mounting system becomes unsatisfactory. In order to solve this dilemma, an active engine mounting system that could isolate or cancel out vibrations occurred at the powertrain was suggested. In this paper, In order to optimize the electromagnetic active engine mount performance, the actuator of the engine mount through FEM analysis and optimal design, noise and elastomer testing of the prototype through the optimal design of actuators for the electromagnetic active engine mount on the impact of the performance improvement is verified.

A Study on Performance Characteristics of Farm Engine Using LNG (LNG를 이용한 농용엔진의 성능특성에 관한 연구)

  • This study was performed to find out performance characteristics and develop LNG engine. this system was designed and manufactured by modification of a diesel using the LNgas. The engine was manufactured to be able to change the compression ratio by changing thickness of the gasket. The results are summarized brake power and torque of the engine increased when compression ratio of the engine increased. The engine output showed more power with gasoline by 5-10% then LNG under compression ratio of 9.5.and maximum brake thermal effeiency was noted when air-fuel ratio was 15.5. The concentrations of NOx, CO and HC in the exhaust gas showed lower values with the engine fueled LNG then gasoline.

  • Vehicle weight reduction is a known strategy to improve fuel efficiency and strengthen exhaust gas regulation. The use of high strength steel can satisfy safety, efficiency, emission, manufacturability, durability, and cost requirements. However, springback of high strength steel results in undesired shape defects. Springback is one of the most important issues of high strength steel for many applications in an automobile. Servo press has various capabilities to improve defects, process conditions, and productivity problems when forming a high strength steel. Especially, servo press can be set to function with variable slide motion in a single operation. In this study, the effect of servo press slide motion on 980MPa high strength steel was investigated through U-bending test.

Fast Light-Off of Catalyst using Cranking Exhaust Gas Ignition (시동 배기가스 점화기술을 이용한 촉매의 예열시간 단축)

  • In order to satisfy the ULEV emissions regulation, fast light-off of a catalyst is essential for reduction of HC and CO emissions during the cold start. Cranking Exhaust Gas Ignition(CEGI) method developed in this study showed that the catalyst reaches the light-off temperature in a few seconds. The CEGI stops the ignition signal for a few seconds during the cranking period, so the unburned fuel-air mixture bypasses the combustion chamber and flows through the exhaust manifold. When the unburned mixture reaches two glow plugs installed upstream of the catalyst, it burns and releases the thermal energy to heat up the catalyst, In the FTP-75 vehicle tests, the CEGI showed that the exhaust emissions reduced by 47.7% for THC and by 88.6% for CO in the cold-transient phase of the test.

  • In unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), the high temperature results from friction with the air, combustion of fuel and combustion gas of a nozzle etc. It causes serious problems in the UAV structure. The characteristic analysis of heat resistant metal and ceramic materials and creep analysis for the functionally graded material (FGM) is presented in this paper. FGM is composed of two constituent materials that are mixed up according to the specific volume fraction distribution in order to withstand high heat condition. In addition, the creep behavior of FGM applied in duct structure of an engine is analyzed.

  • The model gas reaction tests were carried out to investigate the purification characteristics of methane on the exclusive catalyst for NGV. The experiment was conducted with the factors which affect the conversion efficiency of methane, such as Redox ratio, coexistence components of CO, MO, $H_2$O, precious metals and additives. The catalyst loaded with larger amount of pd and with additive La showed lower light-off temperature. In the presence of CO and NO, the conversion efficiency of methane was varied according to the kind of additive loaded. The conversion efficiency of methane was dropped for the catalyst loaded with La under lean air-fuel ratio, while it increased for the one loaded with Ti+Zr for the same condition. It was shown that the water vapor inhibited methane from oxidation by its poisoning on the surface of catalyst.
