The fatigue damage accumulation rates of horizontally curved thin walled box-girder bridge have been estimated from vehicle-induced dynamic stress history using rain flow cycle counting method in the time domain approach. The curved box-girder bridge has been numerically modeled using computationally efficient thin walled box-beam finite elements, which take into account the important structural actions like torsional warping, distortion and distortional warping in addition to the conventional displacement and rotational degrees of freedom. Vehicle model includes heave-pitch-roll degrees of freedom with longitudinal and transverse input to the wheels. The bridge deck unevenness, which is taken as inputs to the vehicle wheels, has been assumed to be a realization of homogeneous random process specified by a power spectral density (PSD) function. The linear damage accumulation theory has been applied to calculate fatigue life. The fatigue life estimated by cycle counting method in time domain has been compared with those found by estimating the PSD of response in frequency domain. The frequency domain method uses an analytical expression involving spectral moment characteristics of stress process. The effects of some of the important parameters on fatigue life of the curved box bridge have been studied.

In this study, we measure damage depth and calculate effective impact speed in case of rear-end collision using real car insurance data. We study the relationship between demage depth and effective impact speed, and present statistical model for these two variables. In our real data study, 3-degree polynomial equation model is better fit to effective impact speed and demage depth than the simple linear model that are estimated in previous other studies. Damage depth is a major factor to see the extent of impact in a car collision, and by using this equation, it is possible to evaluate the severity of driver's injury.

In this paper, DC-PLC typed one-wire controller was designed and manufactured especially for In-vehicle safe devices. One-wire by DC-PLC scheme is to be used as a power supply and ground to process the sensor data and to operate the vehicle actuators. To avoid complicate wires, we use the conventional wires without installing extra communication lines. The data collected from the sensors are transmitted to the main controller, processed by programming, and run the actuators corresponding to the commands sending to vehicle control board. The proposed method shows that only One-wire without requiring several wires make In-vehicle control devices simple and reduce the damage due to the loss of the wiring.

The performance of a passenger vehicle has been greatly improved recently owing to the intensive use of electronic controllers. Many components of a vehicle, including the engine, are controlled by electronic systems installed in the vehicle. Therefore, the electrical power required for such electronics has increased significantly. However, the electrical power generated by the vehicle's alternator, operated by the engine, is limited, and when the vehicle is started, a large instantaneous current is required. The voltage of the vehicle electrical system fluctuates to a very low level, then, it is gradually recovered. This case is very severe and can even cause damage to electronic systems. In this study, a voltage-stabilizing module comprising electric double layer supercapacitors, which could alleviate the voltage variation, was developed and tested.

Injury mechanisms of lower extremity injuries in motor vehicle accidents are focused on fractures, sprains, and contusions. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the analysis of lower extremity injury mechanism in occupant motor vehicle accident by using Hospital Information System (HIS) and reconstruction program, based on the materials related to motor vehicle accidents. Among patients who visited the emergency department of Wonju Severance Christian Hospital due to motor vehicle accidents from August 2012 to February 2014, we collected data on patients with agreement for taking the damaged vehicle's photos. After obtaining the verbal consent from the patient, we asked about the cause of the accident, information on vehicle involved in the accident, and the location of car repair shop. The photos of the damaged vehicle were taken on the basis of front, rear, left side and right side. Damage to the vehicle was presented using the CDC code by analytical study of photo-images of the damaged vehicle, and a trauma score was used for medical examination of the severity of the patient's injury. Among the 1,699 patients due to motor vehicle crashes, 88 (5.2%) received a diagnosis of lower extremity fracture and 141 (8.3%) were the severe who had ISS over 15. Nevertheless during 19 months for research, it was difficult to build up in-depth database about motor vehicle crashes. It has a limitation on collecting data because not only the system for constructing database about motor vehicle crash is not organized but also the process for demanding materials is not available due to prevention of personal information. For accurate analysis of the relationship between occupant injury and vehicle damage in motor vehicle crashes, build-up of an in-depth database through carrying out various policies for motor vehicle crashes is necessary for sure.
Ordinary reinforced concrete (RC) and prestressed concrete bridges are two popular and typical types of short- and medium-span bridges that accounts for the vast majority of all existing bridges. The cost of maintaining, repairing or replacing degraded existing RC bridges is immense. Detecting the abnormality of RC bridges at an early stage and taking the protective measures in advance are effective ways to improve maintenance practices and reduce the maintenance cost. This study proposes a systematic method from influence line (IL) identification to damage detection with applications to RC bridges. An IL identification method which integrates the cubic B-spline function with Tikhonov regularization is first proposed based on the vehicle information and the corresponding moving vehicle induced bridge response time history. Subsequently, IL change is defined as a damage index for bridge damage detection, and information fusion technique that synthesizes ILs of multiple locations/sensors is used to improve the efficiency and accuracy of damage localization. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed systematic method is verified through experimental tests on a three-span continuous RC beam. The comparison suggests that the identified ILs can well match with the baseline ILs, and it demonstrates that the proposed IL identification method has a high accuracy and a great potential in engineering applications. Results in this case indicate that deflection ILs are superior than strain ILs for damage detection of RC beams, and the performance of damage localization can be significantly improved with the information fusion of multiple ILs.

Traffic accidents in tunnel can lead to large traffic accidents due to narrow and dark road characteristics. Therefore, special care of the driver is required when is driving in a tunnel. However, accidents can happen at any time. In the event of an accident, a narrow road structure may lead to a second accident. Therefore, all facilities installed inside the tunnel should be allowed to minimize damage in the event of an accident. We confirmed the safety of the collision target through the action of the sedan, Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) and truck when the vehicle crashed into a stairway installed on the tunnel emergency escape route, and when a concrete barrier or guard rail was installed in front of the stairway. The behavior of the vehicle has resulted in a total of three results: rollover or rollover, change of speed and angle of the vehicle after collision. The sedan and SUV were the most secure when colliding with the guardrail, but considering the truck as a whole, concrete barriers were judged to be the most suitable for minimizing damage from the first accident and reducing the risk of the second accident.

Multi-axial simulation table(MAST) is widely used in motor companies as the multi-axial excitor for vibration fatigue of target component, which provides the vibrational condition as close as the vehicle test. However, the vibration fatigue performance of target component can be guaranteed with MAST system only in case the input profile covers the required severity of the target component on field test. In this paper, the signal processing for multi-axial vibration fatigue test on vehicle component is presented, from the data acquisition of the target component to the derivation of input profile. To compare the severity of vibration condition between field and proving ground, the energy principle of a equivalent damage is proposed and then, it is determined the optimal combination of special events on proving ground using a sequential searching optimal algorithm. To explain the vibration methodology clearly, seat and door component of vehicle are selected as a example.

This study presents the thermal cracking on a commercial vehicle ventilated brake disk. Distributions of temperature and thermal stress of the disk were analysed, using FEM analysis, under the several driving conditions with actual vehicle specifications. The results from the fatigue tests on the disk material were compared with those from FEM analysis. In case of deceleration of 0.6 g with initial vehicle speed of 97, 140, and 160 km/h, the maximum compressive stress at the disk surface of disk due to braking was 224, 318, and 362 MPa, respectively. It was estimated that each damage fraction of 0.00005, 0.00050, 0.00136 per full stop was imposed on the brake disk in case of deceleration of 0.6 g with initial vehicle speed of 97, 140, and 160 km/h, respectively.

Creak noise is kind of scratching noise which is usually generated in drum brake system on the vehicle. When driver brakes vehicle or applies parking lever, drum brake shoe moves to the drum side to stop the vehicle. And at that time, moving shoe scratches backing plate ledge surface, and that makes scratching noise in special condition. This study presents how we can generate creak noise in the laboratory and how we can reduce it by experimental approach. Through several and various type of tests, we could generate creak noise with damage on ledge area of the backing plate in the lab and we verified tab type shoe design can reduce this scratching noise. As a result of this study, we notified how creak noise happens in the vehicle, and that tab type design shoe has good performance of ledge area damage based on lab test(rig & dynamometer equipment), and that this can reduce potential risk of creak noise in the field.
