The development of communication method for a variety of intelligent automobiles are delivering comfortable and safe information. However the development of such communication method must also think about security. Even the update of navigation to be used for intelligent automobiles uses the wireless updating methods but the updating methods currently being used has no reliable security measures. The navigation communications used in the intelligent automobiles are being provided with TTI(Traffic and Travel Information) service using a variety of methods by the countries. In the case of Korea, most are based on T-DMB using the TPEG method for transmitting the information. By identifying the characteristics on the navigation wireless update, a security solution is proposed for delivering the reliable update information after creating the attack scenario.
Greedy protocols show good performance in Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) environment in general. But they make longer routes causing by surroundings or turn out routing failures in some cases when there are many traffic signals which generate empty streets temporary, or there is no merge roads after a road divide into two roads. When a node selects the next node simply using the distance to the destination node, the longer route is made by traditional greedy protocols in some cases and sometimes the route ends up routing failure. Most of traditional greedy protocols just take into account the distance to the destination to select a next node. Each node needs to consider not only the distance to the destination node but also the direction to the destination while routing a packet because of geographical environment. The proposed routing scheme considers both of the distance and the direction for forwarding packets to make a stable route. And the protocol can configure as the surrounding environment. We evaluate the performance of the protocol using two mobility models and network simulations. Most of network performances are improved rather than in compared with traditional greedy protocols.
A car navigation system as an in-vehicle route guidance information (RGI) offers a state-of-the-art technological solution to driver navigation in an unfamiliar area. However, the RGI is provided by some pre-determined options in terms of the interface between a driver and a car navigation system. Drivers occasionally pass the target intersection owing to non- or late- recognizing it. This paper is examined the position of driver's turn signal operation and intersection recognition approaching at the target intersection which is difficult to identify, as a fundamental research on developing the additional RGI connecting with the turn signal control. The field experiment was conducted to measure distances of the turn signal operation and the intersection recognition from the target intersection according to left turns, right turns, and landmarks at adjacent intersection. And glance behavior to the car navigation display was evaluated by using an eye camera. The results of the field study indicate that, most case of driving, drivers operate the turn signal until 40m to 50m before coming to the target intersection. The driving simulator experiment was performed to examine the effectiveness of providing the additional RGI when drivers did not operate the turn signal approaching at the target intersection based on the results of the field study. To provide the additional RGI is effective for the intersection identification and recognition, and expected to improve the traffic safety and the comfort for drivers.

In a prestressed concrete bridge, the magnitude of the prestress force (PF) decreases with time. This unexpected loss can cause failure of a bridge which makes prestress force identification (PFI) critical to evaluate bridge safety. However, it has been difficult to identify the PF non-destructively. Although some research has shown the feasibility of vibration based methods in PFI, the requirement of having a determinate exciting force in these methods hinders applications onto in-service bridges. Ideally, it will be efficient if the normal traffic could be treated as an excitation, but the load caused by vehicles is difficult to measure. Hence it prompts the need to investigate whether PF and moving load could be identified together. This paper presents a synergic identification method to determine PF and moving load applied on a simply supported prestressed concrete beam via the dynamic responses caused by this unknown moving load. This method consists of three parts: (i) the PF is transformed into an external pseudo-load localized in each beam element via virtual distortion method (VDM); (ii) then these pseudo-loads are identified simultaneously with the moving load via Duhamel Integral; (iii) the time consuming problem during the inversion of Duhamel Integral is overcome by the load-shape function (LSF). The method is examined against different cases of PFs, vehicle speeds and noise levels by means of simulations. Results show that this method attains a good degree of accuracy and efficiency, as well as robustness to noise.

Recently, the construction of tunnels longer than one kilometer has increased rapidly. Considering characteristic of limiting structure of longer tunnel, if fires inside tunnel broke out because of vehicle incidents, the catastroph would have high possibility to take place due to toxic smoke and heat of fire. In case of highway tunnel, safety facilities which can cope with tunnel fire are installed in the tunnel but according to rapid increase of heavy good traffic, dangerous goods and enlargement of tunnel magnitude, the research has to carry out about heat fluxes and smoke behaviour during tunnel fire. Therefore, through full-sized fire experiment the paper analyzed temperature distribution, wind velocity, smoke behaviour during tunnel fire.
As SOC (Social Overhead Capital) has been expanded, the highway road construction has been accelerated and city road system has been more complicated. So, long road tunnels have been increased and traffic flow rate also has been raised. Accordingly, the exhausting gas of vehicle cars seriously deteriorates the tunnel inside air quality and driving view. In order to improve tunnel inside air quality, we may need to introduce a compulsory ventilation system as well as natural ventilation mechanism. The natural ventilation mechanism is enough for short tunnels, meanwhile longer tunnels require a specific compulsory ventilation facility. Many foreign countries already have been devoting on development of effective tunnel ventilation system and especially, some European nations and Japan have already applied their developed tunnel ventilation system for longer road tunnels. More recently, as the quality of life improved, our concerns about safety of driving and better driving environment have been increased. In order to obtain clearer and longer driving view, we are more interested in EP tunnel ventilation system in order to remove floating contaminants and automobile exhaust gas. Evan though it's been a long time since many European countries and Japan applied more economical and environment-friendly tunnel ventilation system with their self-developed Electrostatic Precipitator, we are still dependant on imported system from foreign nations. Therefore, we need to develop our unique technical know-how for optimum design tools through validity investigation and continuous possibility examination, eventually in order to localize the tunnel ventilation system technology. In this project, we will manufacture test-run products to examine the performance of system in order to develop main parts of tunnel ventilation system such as electrostatic precipitator, high voltage power generator, water treatment system, etc.

In this study, we used individual trip data to estimate a macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD) that relates flow (or production) to density (or state) in Daegu metropolitan city. The individual trip data were generated by processing data that were collected from DSRC-based (dedicated short range communication) traffic data collection system. Using the processed individual trip data, we first examined whether the assumptions for MFD are valid, and then the relation between outflow and accumulation was estimated in our study site. As a result, we found that i) the assumptions are valid to construct MFD; and ii) the reproducible and well-defined MFDs exist in the network level.

To improve traffic congestion, reduce fuel consumption, and improve the stability of truck operations, truck platooning, in which several trucks are organized in a single platoon, is being actively researched globally. Compared to the operation of a single truck, the operation of a truck platoon requires more caution before the actual operation because an accident of one vehicle in the platoon can lead to an accident with all the vehicles in the platoon. Therefore, this study examined the types of trucks and cargo suitable for truck platooning to prevent safety accidents. The review showed that a closed-van-type truck is appropriate for truck platooning to prevent falling objects during driving. In the case of cargo types, it is necessary to exclude liquids and dangerous goods defined in related laws from truck platooning.

This study presents a decision making process for installation of wind barrier which is used to reduce the wind acting on running vehicle on expressway. At the first stage of this study, the lateral deviations of running vehicles under side winds were computed from the commercial softwares, CarSim and TruckSim, and then the critical wind speeds for car accident were evaluated from predefined risk index. To determine whether it is needed to install wind barrier or not, cost and benefit from wind barrier are calculated during lifetime. In obtaining car accidental risk, probabilistic distribution of wind speed, daily traffic volume, mixture ratio in the volume, and duration time for wind speed range are considered. It is recommended to install wind barrier if benefit from the barrier installation exceed construction cost. In the numerical examples, case studies were shown for risk and benefit calculation and main risky regions on Korean highway were all evaluated to identify the number of installation sites.
Pedestrian safety was recently highlighted with a yellow carpet, a yellow-colored pavement material prepared for children waiting for signals for pedestrian crossing, without validation of its efficiency in practice. It was a promising device likely to assist highway safety by stimulating pedestrian to step on the yellow-colored area; it was generally called nudge effects. This paper delivers a study conducted to check the effectiveness of yellow carpet in three different aspects in vehicle driver's perspective by applying the newly introduced information technology (IT) service: Visual Attention Software (VAS). It was assumed that VAS developed by 3M in the United States should be able explain the Korean drivers' visual reaction behaviors since technology embedded in VAS was developed based on and proved by other various international countries and continents in the world. A set of pictures was taken at thirteen different field sites in seven school zone areas in the Seoul metropolitan area before and after the installation of a yellow carpet, respectively. Sets of those pictures were analyzed with VAS, and the results were compared based on the selective safety measures: the likely focusing on standing pedestrians (waiting for a pedestrian's green signal time) affected by its background (yellow-colored pavement) contrasting him or her. The test results from a set of before-and-after comparison analyses showed that the placement of yellow carpet would (1) increase 71% of driver's visual attention on pedestrian crossing areas and (2) change the sequential order of visual attention on that area 2.4 steps ahead. The findings would enhance deployment of such promising efficiency and thus increase children safety in pedestrian crossing. The result was promising to highlight the way to support the changes in conservative traffic safety engineering field by applying the advanced IT services, while much robust research was recommended to overcome the limitation of simplification of this study.
