  • In this study, the steady state cornering behavior of a vehicle is investigated by using a numerical model that has parameters associated with roll motion. The nonlinear characteristics of tire cornering forces and aligning torques are presented in analytical forms using the magic formula. The sets of nonlinear algebraic equations that govern the cornering motion are solved by the Newton-Raphson iteration method. The vehicle design parameters are measured by SPMD(Suspension Parameter Measuring Device), and its results are verified by carrying out a skid pad test. The design parameters that are most affecting the steady state cornering behavior are classified into four factors, and the contributions of the factors to understeer gradient are then calculated.

  • As one of the major handling performances of the vehicle and tire, the steering feel is very important in the high speed where safety and refinement is a major concern for the drivers. This paper presents both subjective and objective techniques for the assessment of the steering feel including the on-center feel and steering response. For this, subjective evaluation method of the steering feel was studied at first and then objective parameters were selected by considering the process by which the steering feel is evaluated subjectively. From statistical analysis of subjective and objective data for the several vehicles and professional drivers, it was found that the subjective assessment of the steering feel could be successfully explained by means of the suggested objective parameters. Also, the main objective parameters related to the subjective assessment of the steering feel could be found.

  • In this paper, a research for the dynamic wheel loads of a 3D vehicle model, which relates to a tire-enveloping model, is carried out. A single truck with four axles is modeled as a 10-D.O.F. vehicle by modeling both contact length of tires and pitching of tandem spring axles. The dynamic equations of the vehicle are obtained using the Lagrange's equation, the solution of the equations is calculated by Newmark-${\beta}$ method. The validity of the developed 3D vehicle model is demonstrated by comparing results obtained from the proposed method with those from experimental data. The maximum impact factors of tire force are evaluated according to the various step bumps on which a 24-ton dump truck is running.

  • This paper presents design and performance evaluation of electro-rheological(ER) shock absorber for electronic control suspension(ECS). In order to achieve this goal, a cylindrical ER shock absorber that satisfies design specifications for a mid-sized commercial passenger vehicle is designed and manufactured to construct ER suspension system for ECS. After experimentally evaluating dynamic characteristics of the manufactured ER shock absorber, the quarter-vehicle ER suspension system consisting of sprung mass, spring, tire and the ER shock absorber is constructed in order to investigate the ride comfort and driving stability. After deriving the equations of the motion for the proposed quarter-vehicle ER suspension system, the skyhook controller is implemented for the realization of quarter-vehicle ER suspension system. In order to present control performance of ER shock absorber for ECS, ride comfort and driving stability characteristics such as vertical acceleration and tire deflection are experimentally evaluated under various road conditions and presented in both time and frequency domain.

  • This paper demonstrates a unique method for measuring vehicle states such as body sideslip angle and tire sideslip angle using Global Positioning System(GPS) velocity information in conjunction with other sensors. A method for integrating Inertial Navigation System (INS) sensors with GPS measurements to provide higher update rate estimates of the vehicle states is presented, and the method can be used to estimate the tire cornering stiffness. The experimental results for the GPS velocity-based sideslip angle measurement. From the experimental results, it can be concluded that the proposed method has an advantage for future implementation in a vehicle safety system.

  • This paper presents design and control of electronic control suspension(ECS) equipped with controllable magnetorheological(MR) damper for passenger vehicle. In order to achieve this goal, a cylindrical type MR fluid damper that satisfies design specification of a middle-sized commercial passenger vehicle is proposed. After manufacturing the MR damper with design parameters, their field-dependent damping forces are experimentally evaluated and compared with those of a conventional damper. A quarter-vehicle MR ECS system consisting of sprung mass, spring, tire, controller and the MR damper is established in order to investigate the ride comfort performances. On the basis of the governing equation of motion of the suspension system, five control strategies(soft, hard, comfort, sport and optimal mode) are formulated. The proposed control strategies are then experimentally realized with the quarter-vehicle MR ECS system. Control performances such as vertical acceleration of the car body and tire deflection are evaluated in frequency domains on random road condition. In addition, performance comparison of WRMS(weighted root mean square) of the quarter-vehicle MR ECS system on random road are undertaken in order to investigate ride comfort characteristics.

  • Traditionally, tire made a role of function, which is supporting vehicle load, making brake, transferring, traction etc. So, there are a lot of studying for the tire. especially, tire noise is one of the most important parameter in the car noise. this thesis shows the method how to reduce the tire noise by using the optimal pitch sequence. Because the optimal pitch sequence prevents tire from generating the pure tone while driving the car on the ground.

  • It is well known that the acoustic cavity inside the tire-wheel assembly contributes to vehicle interior noise. In this paper, we have performed acoustic and structural modal testings to investigate the influences of the acoustic cavity resonance on structural vibration characteristics for the tire in free-suspension and for the loaded tire. The testings have given us some findings, which are reported in this paper.

  • The tire is considered as one of the Important noise sources having an influence on vehicle's performance. The Pattern noise of a tire is the transmission sound of airborne noise. On smooth asphalt road, Pattern noise is amplified with the velocity. In recent, the study on the reduction of Pattern noise is energetically processed. Pattern noise is strongly related with pitch sequence. To reduce the pattern noise, tire's designer has to randomize the sequence of pitch. The FFT is a traditional method to evaluate the level of the randomization of the pitch sequence, but gives no information on time-varying, instantaneous frequency. In the study, we found that Time-Frequency transform is a useful method to non-stationary signal such as tire noise.
