  • ECG data are used for the diagnostic purposes with many clinical situations, especially heart disease. In this paper, an efficient ECG data compression technique by wavelet transform and high-speed vector quantization on PMS-B algorithm is proposed. In general, ECG data compression techniques are divided into two categories: direct and transform methods. The direct data compression techniques are AZTEC, TP, CORTES, FAN and SAPA algorithms, besides the transform methods include K-L, Fourier, Walsh, and wavelet transforms. In this paper, we applied wavelet analysis to the ECG data. In particular, vector quantization on PMS-B algorithm to the wavelet coefficients in the higher frequency regions, but scalar quantized in the lower frequency regions by PCM. Finally, the quantized indices were compressed by LZW lossless entropy encoder. As the result of simulation, it turns out to get sufficient compression ratio while keeping clinically acceptable PRD.

  • In this paper a Dear lossless compression of medical images with vector quantizer is proposed. In order to apply the vector quantizer to medical images, the peak error in the reconstructed image is reduced down to 1. Simulation results show that the proposed coding scheme provides better performance with a PSNR improvement compared to the conventional JPEG standard.

  • According to the rapid advance of computer and communication techniques, the request of mobile internet services is highly increasing. However, the main obstacles for mobile vector map service environments, are large data volume and narrow wireless bandwidth. Among the many possible solutions, spatial data compression technique may contribute to reduce the load of bandwidth and client response time. This thesis proposes two methods for spatial data compression. The one is relative coordinates transformation method, and the other is client coordinates transformation method. And, this thesis also proposes the system architecture for experiments. The two compression methods could be evaluated the compression effect and the response time.

  • Image compression is a popular research issue that focuses on the problems of reducing the size of multimedia files. Vector Quantization (VQ) is a well-known lossy compression method which can significantly reduce the size of a digital image while maintaining acceptable visual quality. A locally adaptive scheme (LAS) was proposed to improve the compression rate of VQ in 1997. However, a LAS needs extra indicators to indicate the sources, consequently the compression rate of LAS will be affected. In this paper, we propose a novel method to eliminate the LAS indicators and so improve the compression rate. The proposed method uses the concept of data hiding to conceal the indicators, thus further improving the compression rate of LAS. From experimental results, it is clearly demonstrated that the proposed method can actually eliminate the extra indicators while successfully improving the compression rate of the LAS.

  • Motion Estimation(ME) is an important part of video compression, because it requires a large amount of computation. Half-pixel and quarter-pixel motion estimation allows high video compression rates but it also has high computation complexity. In this paper we suggest a new and efficient motion estimation algorithm for half-pixel and quarter-pixel motion estimation using SAD values. In the method, an integer-pixel motion vector is found and then only three neighboring points of the integer-pixel motion vector is evaluated to find the half-pixel motion vector. The quarter-pixel motion vector is also found by using a similar method. Experimental results of our method shows 20% reduction in computation time, when compared with those of a conventional method, while producing same quality motion vectors.

  • In this paper, an image vector quantization method is proposed not only to improve the compression ratio but also to reduce the computation cost. The proposed method could save the computation cost of codebook generation and encoding by using the modified LBG algorithm of Partial Search Partial Distortion (PSPD) in wavelet domain, by which the code book was constructed together with the partial codebook search, the partial code vector elements, and the interruption criterion. We have designed and implemented the vector quantizer to verify the improvement in reducing compression ratio in encoding processing and reducing the computation cost.

  • This paper propose a novel vector-quantized block truncation coder for image data compression. A data compression ratio of about 3-6 times larger than that of the BTC can be achieved by utilizign a vector quantizer with the BTC. A vector quantizer was realized by computer simulation. The compressed data rate of 0.7~1.0 bit/pel with intraframe coder and that of 0.3~0.5 bit/pel with interframe coder gives a good performance.

  • Recently, due to applicability increase of vector data based digital map for geographic information and evolution of geographic measurement techniques, large volumed GIS(geographic information service) services having high resolution and large volumed data are flowing actively. This paper proposed an efficient vector map compression technique using the SEC(spatial energy compaction) based on classified bins for the vector map having 1cm detail and hugh range. We encoded polygon and polyline that are the main objects to express geographic information in the vector map. First, we classified 3 types of bins and allocated the number of bits for each bin using adjacencies among the objects. and then about each classified bin, energy compaction and or pre-defined VLC(variable length coding) were performed according to characteristics of classified bins. Finally, for same target map, while a vector simplification algorithm had about 13%, compression ratio in 1m resolution we confirmed our method having more than 80% encoding efficiencies about original vector map in the 1cm resolution. Also it has not only higher compression ratio but also faster computing speed than present SEC based compression algorithm through experimental results. Moreover, our algorithm presented much more high performances about accuracy and computing power than vector approximation algorithm on same data volume sizes.

  • H.264 processes more detailed and more motion information for the compression efficiency. However, motion vector of H.264 takes more portion than previous standards such as MPEG-1/2/4 do, so that it is needed to consider motion vectors. This paper proposes the new algorithm with leaf mode in order to compress the motion vector efficiently. The proposed algorithm concentrates modes' distribution with leaf mode and carries out the compression of motion vector with less modes. The proposed algorithm adopted in current $4{\times}4$ motion vector matrix also can be extend to $8{\times}8$. The experiments shows that the proposed algorithm reduces up to 12.68% at header and 9.7% at resultant bitstream.

  • Currently, the most important technology is compression methods in the multimedia society. In audio compression, the method using human auditory nervous property is used. This method using psychoacoustical model is applied to perceptual audio coding, because human's audibility is limited. MPEG-II AAC(Advanced Audio Coding) is the most advanced coding scheme that is of benefit to high quality audio coding. The compression ratio is 1.4 times compared with MPEG-I layer-III. In this paper, the vector processor for MDCT/IMDCT(Modified Discrete Cosine Transform /Inverse Modified Discrete Cosine Transform) of MPEG-II AAC is designed.
