Sex hormones have long been considered to play an important role in bone turnover rate, periodontal diseases, and wound healing. We have studied the effect of porcine testis steroid extract (PTSE), an extract of porcine testes, which holds a good ratio of 19-nortestosterone (nandrolone), testosterone, androstenedione, $17{\beta}$-estradiol, and estrone, on the healing rate of a standardized full-thickness linear wound on the back of the rat. Skin punch or carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) laser methods were used to create the deep skin injury in two groups of animals. The animals were treated with the PTSE cream, control cream and Vaseline (control) to find out the effect in re-epithelialization, contraction, and formation of granulation and scar tissues. Histological examination after 21 days showed 100, 87.4, and 80.5% recovery of epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis, respectively in the PTSE-treated animals. Similarly, on the 15th day of treatment, complete healing of intact skin was observed in the PTSE cream-treated animals among the laser radiation group. Even though the beginning of re-epithelialization phase and completion of serum crust formation was also observed in the base cream- and Vaseline-treated animals respectively, the complete healing cycle was observed only in the PTSE-treated group. The white blood cell count in the PTSE-treated group showed that PTSE cream is nontoxic to animals.
Labial adhesion in prepubertal girls is a common gynecologic problems. The labia minora are fused by thin transparent or thick fibrous membrane in the midline from the clitoris to posterior fourchet. The prevalence of labial adhesion may be even greater because many children with labial fusions are asymptomatic and these cases remain unreported. They are often unrecognized by physician and parents because most of symptomatic children complained urinary symptoms. The authors experienced 2 cases of labial adhesion in girls; one asymptomatic partial fusion and the other symptomatic complete fusion. These lesions were treated successfully by mechanical separation of labial adhesion and petroleum ointment (Vaseline) application without recurrence in follow-ups.
The paper is to report a case of zinc-deficient parakeratotic hyperkeratosis in a dog. In this dermatosis, although an available diagnosis of zinc-deficient dermatosis is to analyse the serum or hair zinc Bevels, exact analysis of zinc is difficult and unreliable due to contamination of zinc by various environmental, physiologic and disease-related factors. Diagnosis may be performed by history, physical examination and blood chemical analysis. Laboratory evaluation revealed hypercholesterolemia and low activities of serum alkaline photophatase and total protein. The dog showed thick crusts at the elbows joint, stifle joint and testis. Zinc sulfate is administered per oral to patient with application of salicylic acid added vaseline ointment on hyperkaratic lesions. The dog is successfully cured.

Dose distribution was evaluated under vaseline and thin lead used as surface bolus, in case with scattering filter and without, for 9-MeV electron using chambers in water phantom. The results were as follows: 1. The skin dose can be remarkably increased with thin lead bolus than with convensional bolus. 2. The skin dose over $110\%$ in the 0.6mm thin lead bolus compared with the maximum dose in normal irradiation, so skin burn or any other complications may be occured in patients.
In order to increase the storage stability of watermelon stalk, storage environments such as temperature and other treatments such as vaseline, mixture of soybean oil and wheat flour, and coated paper label were tested separately after harvesting. At different storage temperatures (7, 18 and $30^{\circ}C$) shelf-life of stalk was inversely proportional to temperature. The results showed that during storage at $30^{\circ}C$ they were completely wilted in 7 days, at $18^{\circ}C$ in 15 days and at $7^{\circ}C$ in 19 days. Our data also showed that stability of watermelon stalk depending on temperature was very closely correlated with water content of watermelon stalk; during storage at $30^{\circ}C$ the water content of watermelon stalk was decreased to 21.1 % in 7 days, whereas at $7^{\circ}C$ the water content was decreased gradually to 71.2 % for 19 days of storage. In order to reduce the physiological changes in watermelon stalk at $30^{\circ}C$, following treatments such as vaseline, mixture of soybean oil and wheat flour, and coated paper label were tested. As a result, watermelon stalk without any treatment was completely wilted in 9 days, while stalks treated with vaseline and mixture of soybean oil with wheat flour were wilted in 15 and 12 days, respectively. The wilt delay was noted in the watermelon stalk for $3{\sim}6$ days during both treatments but the outward quality was found detracted, whereas when treated with coated paper label, the wilt of stalk was delayed for 3 days along with the improvement in the outward quality. Therefore this data indicate that the treatment of coated paper label during storage at $30^{\circ}C$ can be considered as a potent method for maintaining the physiology of watermelon stalk.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of skin dose and PDD by using wounds protecting gauzes or Vaselinespread gauzes. And it was studied that the possibility to substitute custom bolus into gauzes. 4MV photon (CL600C, varian, US), Polystyrene Phantom (30(W) X30(L) X 30(H)) with Markus chamber(PTW, US) were used for dose measurement. This study was distinguished natural gauzes and spread over Vaseline gauzes. We gave variety to the gauze thickness at 5, 10 and 15 sheets respectively. For comparison between using bolus and not that, we had used 1.0 cm thickness bolus so that analyzed surface dose and PDD at the same conditions above mentioned. When maximum point was defined as reference point, surface dose was measured as $35\%$ in open beam. When the gauzes were attached to surface as 5, 10 and 15 sheets, surface dose were increased as 69, 80 and $91\%$ respectively according to thickness of gauzes. When spread over Vaseline gauzes were attached to surface as 5, 10 and 15 sheets, surface dose were increased respectively as 98, 100 and $98\%$ according to thickness of gauzes. Also when 0.5 cm bolus and 5 sheets gauzes were composed, surface dose was measured as $98\%$. The gauzes that were attached to skin surface in radiation therapy had been scattering material and contributed increasing surface dose without variation of percentage depth dose. However, if we want to delivery much dose to skin surface then we have to apply many sheets of gauzes to skin surface. Although we get easy that result by bolus or spread over Vaseline gauzes, we have to revise percentage depth dose at calculation. Therefore, if we find pertinent conditions based on measured data that are considered skin dose and patient setup efficiency, to replace custom bolus with gauzes will be helpful to efficient treatment.
Investigations were carried out into the time-and dose-related changes in acute skin reaction following graded single dose (20,30 and 40 Gy) of x-ray irradiation in Wistar rats, in order to evaluate the radioprotective effect of Diethon on skin. For the duration of skin response over 1. 5 score in dose of 40 Gy, the Diethone group of 24.7 days was significantly different (p<0.02) from that of control (29.8 days) and vaseline (29.2 days) groups, it was $17.1\%$ diminution of skin response period compared with that of control group. By the averaging daily scores for 10 days during peak skin reaction the mean scores were obtained. Mean score of Diethone group $(2.43\pm0.22)$ was significantly different (p<0.01) from that of control $(2.91\pm0.23)$ and vaseline $(2.81\pm0.18)$ groups of 40Gy dose. By iso-effect dose obtained at level of 2.5 score the dose reduction factor (DRF) was 1.41 which reduced radiation dose of $41\%$ by radioprotective effect of Diethone. From this experimental data, it may be possible to give higer radiation dose to large and/or radioresistant tumor mass rather than conventional treatment doses for improving therapeutic ratio by using topical application of skin radioprotector.
Alginate, a polymer of guluronic and mannuronic acid, is used as a scaffolding material in biomedical applications. The research was to produce highly-purified alginate from seaweeds and to evaluate the efficacy of alginate as dermal substrate. Our alginate purification method showed a production rate as high as 25%. The purified alginate contained little polyphenol contents and endotoxin, proteins. For study of wound healing, full thickness skin defects were made on the dorsal area of the animal models. And then alginate, fibroblast-growth-factor mixed alginate, alginate-collagen complex, vaseline gauze as control were applied on the wound, respectively, and were evaluated grossly and histopathologically. For biocompatibility test, alginate and alginate-collagen complex discs were implanted on the back of Sprague-Dawly rats. Four weeks after implantation, the animals were examined immunologically against alginate and collagen. Alginate and FGF-mixed alginate, alginate-collagen complex group showed statistically higher percentage of wound contraction and wound healing than control group(p<0.05). Alginate-collagen complex group and FGF-mixed alginate group showed statistically higher percentage of wound healing than alginate group. The experiment of biocompatibility and immunologic reaction against impanted alginate or collagen needs more investigation. Highly-purified alginate from seaweeds by our purification method, showed the effect of wound healing, and addition of FGF or collagen increases the alginate's wound healing effect. It shows the possibility of alginate as a dermal substrate.

Nasotracheal intubation is performed routinely in maxillofacial surgery to optimize visualization of the surgical field. The CaldwellLuc operation is an approach to the maxillary sinus through the labiogingival sulcus and canine fossa. The operation is used to treat chronic maxillary sinusitis, and involves curettage of the mucosa of the maxillary sinus and the creation of an inferior meatal antrostomy. After the operation, a nasal Foley catheter is inserted into the inferior nasal meatus for the discharge of blood and tissue fluid. Then, the nostril is packed with vaseline gauze. Before the patients awaken, they experience impaired switching from nasal to oral breathing. Pulmonary edema can result from excessive negative intrathoracic pressure caused by acute airway obstruction in patients breathing spontaneously. During anesthesia and sedation, airway obstruction can occur at the levels of the pharynx and larynx. Even in patients who are awake, alteration in the ability to change the breathing route from nasal to oral may affect breathing in the presence of an airway obstruction, causing this catastrophic event. We experienced a case in which acute pulmonary edema resulted from acute airway obstruction triggered by the patient's inability to switch the breathing route from nasal to oral during emergence from anesthesia.
The measurement of sonic velocities is commonly used as an index of engineering properties of rock, but it is not widely appreciated that this velocity can change markedly with the degree of saturation of the sample. This paper records the nature of this variation as seen in samples of Korean granite. The ISRM method of testing suggested for this index can also create difficulties, especially if vaseline is used as a coupling agent, and invades the samples, and if the sample volume changes with degree of saturation. Careful measurements of the natural variation in sonic velocity that occur in a sample whose saturation is gradually increased may be a means of assessing the relic stresses within it.
