The increasing use of plastics in food packaging materials has led to the issue of food-packaging mutual interactions from residues in the plastics. Plastic films are commonly printed by using solvent-based ink to decorate the packaged food for consumer attention. However, the residual solvents can not be completely removed and they can migrate into the contained food which lead to undesirable off-flavors. Partitioning (Kp) of printing ink solvents was studied in two types of plastic films with different chemical structure and polarity. At $25^{\circ}C$, Kp of toluene is higher than that of isopropanol in PP, but isopropanol showed higher Kp value than toluene in EVOH. This showed that polarity had a significant effect on the partitioning of printing ink solvents into the plastic films. Printing solvents had a higher affinity to the polymer with similar polarity than it did to the different one.
Under ordinary atmospheric circumstances, the gravimetric technique was used to measure the solubility of L-cysteine (L-Cys) and L-alanine (L-Ala) in various solvents, including methyl alcohol, ethyl acetate, and mixtures of the two, in the range o 283.15 K to 323.15 K. Both individual solvents and their combinations showed a rise in the solubility of L-Cys and L-Ala with increasing temperature, according to the analyzed data but when analyzed at a constant temperature in the selected mixed solvents, the solubility declined with decreasing of initial mole fractions of methyl alcohol. To further assess, the relative utility of the four solubility models, we fitted the solubility data using the Jouyban-Acree (J-A), van't Hoff-Jouyban-Acree (V-J-A), Apelblat-Jouyban-Acree (A-J-A), and Ma models followed by evaluation of the values of the RAD information criteria and the RMSD were. The dissolution was also found to be an entropy-driven spontaneous mixing process in the solvents since the thermodynamic parameters of the solvents were determined using the van't Hoff model. In order to support the industrial crystallization of L-cysteine and L-alanine and contribute to future theoretical research, we have determined the experimental solubility, correlation equations, and thermodynamic parameters of the selected amino acids during the dissolution process.
The relation between the flocculation and dispersion of metal oxide powders and the properties of solvents, such as dielectric constant and solubility parameter, was investigated for TiO$_2$, $Al_2$O$_3$and Fe$_2$O$_3$particles. The particle size and median diameter of these metal oxides were measured in many organic solvents, from which the effect of solvents on the flocculation and dispersion of metal oxide powders was considered. The metal oxide powders of TiO$_2$, $Al_2$O$_3$and Fe$_2$O$_3$tend to disperse in a solvent of higher polarity, whereas they are apt to flocculate in a solvent of low dielectric constant, because the Hamaker constant between the particles becomes larger in such a solvent. There we, however, some solvents that do not obey these tendencies. It is possible to evaluate the flocculation and dispersion of these metal oxide powders in many solvents by using numeral balances of Hansen’s three-dimensional solubility parameter (f$_{d}$, f$_{p}$ and f$_{h}$). There exists a solvent giving the optimal dispersion for each metal oxide, and the optimal dispersion point of f$_{d}$, f$_{p}$ and f$_{h}$ is determined by the combination of various metal oxide powders and solvents.nts.nts.nts.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the present state of worker's physical. behavioral effects and recognition about the hazard factors in their workplace. The subject consisted of 208 workers in the organic solvents related industry. The workers were surveyed by means of a Questionnaire during the period of March 24 to May 26. 1994. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics. t-test. AVOVA using the SAS program. The result of the study are follows: 1. The more than half of workers in the organic solvents related industry have experienced 'eye disturbance', 'headache', 'sputum formation' and 'dizziness'. 2. $83.4\%$ of workers have recognized the name of organic solvents in using of their workplace. $62.4\%$ of workers have recognized the harmfulness of organic solvents. $41.7\%$ of workers have not recognized the difference of harmfulness of various organic solvents. 3. $27.8\%$ of workers have called on clinic when have experienced physical symptoms. About $90\%$ of workers have called on hospitals and drugstores when have experienced physical symptoms.
This study was designed to investigate the role of onion as a natural antioxidant. Onion was distinguished as yellow onion peel and onion flesh. Onion samples were extracted with 5 different kinds of solvents such as water, 70% ethanol, 99.9%ethanol, 99.9% methanol, and 96% butanol in order to select optimal extraction solvents, In this part of study linoleic acid was used s an model system for the purpose of determining the antioxidant activities. The optimal extraction rate of various solvents containing onion samples was determined by measuring extraction yield, electron donating ability(EDA), thiobarbituric acid(TBA), and thiocyanate, which are common methods for measuring activity. As a result 70% ethanol was shown as the most effective solvent.

Lipases catalyzed the transesterification reaction between esters and various primary and secondary alcohols in a 99% organic medium, porcine pancreatic, yeast, mold lipases can vigorously act as catalysts in a number of nearly anhydrous organic solvents. Various transesterification reactions catalyzed by porcine pancreatic lipase in hexane obey Michaelis-Menten kinetics. The dependence of the catalytic activity of the enzyme in organic media on the pH of the aqueous solution from which it was recovered is bell-shaped, with the maximum coinciding with the pH optimum of the enzymatic activity in water. The catalytic power exhibited by the lipases in organic solvents is comparable to that displayed in water. In addition to transesterification, lipases Can catalyze several other processes in organic media.
Solvatokinetic and solvatochromic behavior of bis(indolinobenzospiropyranyl) sulfide derivatives 1a-1c have been studied in various solvents. The marked negative solvatochromism is exhibited for 1a and 1b in the whole region of solvent polarity examined. Whereas, it is found only in the polar solvent region ($E_T$ > 37) for 1c. The sensitivity order to the solvent media (slope values) is 1a > 1b > 1c. The branched linear plot with a zero slope was shown for the most sterically-hindered compound 1c in the less polar-solvent region (($E_T$ < 37). The biphasic plot is indicative of dual mechanistic process, i.e., a transition state with increased zwitter-ionic character in more polar solvents and electrocyclic process with an isopolar transition state in less polar solvents.
Effect of different alkane based solvents on the stability of emulsion liquid membrane was investigated using normal alkanes (n-hexane, n-heptane, n-octane and n-decane) under various operating parameters of surfactant concentration, emulsification time, internal phase concentration, volume ratio of internal phase to organic phase, volume ratio of emulsion phase to external phase and stirring speed. Results of stability revealed that emulsion liquid membrane containing n-octane as solvent and span-80 (5 % (w/w)) as emulsifying agent presented the highest amount of emulsion stability (the lowest breakage) compared with other solvents; however, operating parameters (surfactant concentration (5% (w/w)), emulsification time (6 min), internal phase concentration (0.05 M), volume ratio of internal phase to organic phase (1/1), volume ratio of emulsion phase to external phase (1/5) and stirring speed (300 rpm)) were also influential on improving the stability (about 0.2% breakage) and on achieving the most stable emulsion. The membrane with the highest stability was employed to extract acridine orange with various concentrations (10, 20 and 40 ppm) from water. The emulsion liquid membrane prepared with n-octane as the best solvent almost removed 99.5% of acridine orange from water. Also, the prepared liquid membrane eliminated completely (100%) other cationic dyes (methylene blue, methyl violet and crystal violet) from water demonstrating the efficacy of prepared emulsion liquid membrane in treatment of dye polluted waters.
In the developed NMR hyperpolarization techniques, Signal amplification by reversible exchange (SABRE) technique is thought to be a promising method to overcome the low sensitivity of bio-NMR/MRI. Most experiments using SABRE have been done in methanol, which is biologically harmful solvent. Therefore, more biological friendly solvent, such as ethanol can be more appropriate solvent to be applicable in bio-NMR and MRI. As the proof of concept, successful hyperpolarization on pyridine via SABRE is carried out in ethanol and its enhancement factor is calculated to be more than 150 folds. To investigate more about its possibility of hyperpolarization in different alcohol solvents, methanol and propanol are used for SABRE in the same condition. The overall polarization trend in different external magnetic field is similar but its polarization number is decreased with higher molecular weight solvents (the order from methanol to propanol). This result indicates that the efficiency of SABRE is different from solvent system despite its same functional group and similar properties. Higher para-hydrogen concentration, higher partial pressure of para-hydrogen, and deuterated solvent can increase the hyperpolarization in any solvents. With these series of successful SABRE results, future studies on SABRE in more biofriendly environment, on more various solvent systems, and with more substrates are needed and it will be the firm basis for applying the SABRE system on the future bio-NMR/MRI.

The purpose of this study is to substitute water-based painting materials for the current solvent-based ones used in motor-repairing process to minimize the exposure of organic solvents to the painters. This study assessed the exposure of organic solvents to the painters using water-based and solvent-based painting materials and compared compositions, painting processes and the health hazards of the application of these alternative painting mate rials. The results of this study are as follows. 1. solvent-based painting materials used in motor-repairing process consist of various organic solvents, which consist primarily of toluene, xylene, ethyl benzene, ethyl methyl benzene, trimethyl benzene, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, methyl isobutyl ketone, 2-ethoxy ethanol, 2-ethoxy ethyl acetate and toluene-2,4-diisocianate and the others. These organic solvents are known as health-hazardous substances. But water-based painting materials are high-solid, low-solvent one sand consist of such two organic solvents as 2-butoxy ethanol and 2-heptanone and the others. 2. The painters us ing solvent-based painting mate rials in motor-repairing process are exposed to various organic solvents which consist of toluene, xylene, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, methyl isobutyl ketone, trimethyl benzene, 2-ethoxy ethanol, and 2-ethoxy ethyl acetate. But the painters using solvent-based ones are only exposed to 2-butoxy ethanol and 2-heptanone. 3. By using water-based painting materials in stead of solvent-based painting materials containing health-hazardous organic solvents, the exposure of such organic solvents in the painter's breathing zone can be largely prevented. 4. This study recommends water-based painting materials as substitutes for the current solvent-based ones used in motor-repairing process to minimize the exposure of organic solvents to the painters.
