In this research, monoterpene emissions were investigated from pine trees(Pinus densiflora) and in the forest air in Simwon village at the Jiri Mountain. Air samples from an enclosed chamber and pine forest air were collected using a Tenax TA Tube five times a day(at 09:00, 11:00, 13:00, 15:00, and 17:00) on 1 day per month from March to November 2014. Selected needles and branches from individual pine trees were enclosed for the measurement of their monoterpene emissions. The concentration and composition of emitted monoterpenes were analyzed in a time series. The major components of monoterpenes emitted from pine trees were α-pinene, β-myrcene, β-phellandrene, and β-pinene. Seasonal data showed that the concentration of monoterpenes emitted from pine trees began increasing in June and reached its peak in August, decreasing thereafter. In addition, seasonal emissions of monoterpenes were dependent on environmental factors such as temperature. The major species of monoterpenes in forest air were α-pinene, β-pinene, and camphene. The concentration of monoterpenes in forest air began rising from March to April and reached its peak in May; multiple peaks subsequently formed in July and November. Diurnal variation in monoterpenes decreased from 09:00-10:00, reaching a low and high at 13:00-14:00 and 17:00-18:00, respectively.

The cement clinker, the main raw material of cement, is manufactured using limestone as the main material. Depending on the quality of limestone, the use of subsidiary materials changes, and has a great influence on the production of cement clinkers. In this study, the effect of CaO content of limestone, a cement clinker material, on Raw Mill grinding and sintering of cement clinker was investigated. The grinding time of the union materials changed in the content of limestone CaO was measured to identify the grinding properties. The raw material combination was cleaned within a range of 1,350-1,500℃. The sintering performance of cement clinker by Burnability index calculation was identified. The lower the grade of limestone, the lower the grinding quality of the raw material combination. The lower the CaO content of limestone, the greater the variation in F-CaO for sintering temperature. The lower the class of limestone, the higher B. I. value was calculated, indicating the lower cement clinker sintering. In addition, the mineral analysis results of cement clinker showed that if the F-CaO value was low due to the increase in sintering temperature, the Belite content decreased and the Alite content increased. In the case of Alite, the ratio of R-type decreased and that of M-type increased as the content of limestone CaO increased.
This study analyzed the effect of meteorological factors on the concentration of PM10 (particulate matter 10) in the atmosphere and the variation of rainwater quality using multivariate statistical analysis. The concentration of PM10 in the atmosphere was continuously measured during eleven precipitation events with a custom-built PM sensor node. A total of 183 rainwater samples were analyzed for pH, EC (electrical conductivity), and water-soluble cations (Na+, Mg2+, K+, Ca2+, NH4+) and anions (Cl-, NO3-, SO42-). The data has been analyzed using two multivariate statistical techniques (principal component analysis, PCA, and Pearson correlation analysis) to identify relationships among PM10 concentrations in the atmosphere, meteorological factors, and rainwater quality factors. When the rainfall intensity was relatively strong (> 5 mm/h, rainfall type 1), the PM10 concentration in the atmosphere showed a negative correlation (r = -0.55, p < 0.05) with cumulative rainfall. The PM10 concentration increased the concentration of water-soluble ions (r = 0.25) and EC (r = 0.4), and decreased the pH (r = -0.7) of rainwater samples. However, for rainfall type 2 (< 5 mm/h), there was no negative correlation between the PM10 concentration in the atmosphere and cumulative rainfall and no statistically significant correlation between the PM10 concentration in the atmosphere and rainwater quality.
The processing of rice is one of the measures to expand the scope of rice use in response to the decrease in rice consumption. Since the main ingredient of rice processing is rice flour, "rice flour varieties" have been bred with the aim to improve the productivity and quality of rice flour. In order to study the variation in the ripening characteristics of rice flour varieties with respect to temperature, the average temperature after heading date was set at 28℃ (33/23℃), 22℃ (27/17℃), and 18℃ (23/13℃) inside the phytotron. We used Saenuri as non-glutinous rice variety, Seolgaeng as soft-type rice flour variety, and Baromi2 as powdered rice flour variety. At high temperatures (28℃), the grain weight of Baromi2 decreased by 21%. Its starch content also decreased by more than 10%, which was significantly lower than that of Saenuri and Seolgaeng. At low temperatures (18℃), the grain weight and starch content slightly increased or were similar in all varieties. An analysis of changes in the grain weight due to effective accumulated temperature through the sigmoid function showed that the velocity of grain-filling slowed significantly when Baromi2 was exposed to low temperature during the ripening stage compared to the other varieties. Therefore, the transplanting time of Baromi2 should be delayed to avoid high temperatures during the ripening stage. However, because the ripening period is not properly secured under low temperature conditions, grain filling may not be sufficient.

The whiteleg shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei can survive in a wide range of salinity (1-40 psu). However, such variation, particularly at low salinity (1-5 psu), can affect various physiological changes such as survival rates, non-specific immunity and disease resistance. In this study, growth, non-specific immunity and disease resistance were measured following simultaneous oral feeding and addition of probiotic microbes into culture water for 73 day period. The salinity of the culture water was maintained at 3 psu by periodical salt additions. The result shows that survival rate increased significantly (5.6 vs. 15.4%) after 73 day rearing. Significant increases were identified in reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and phenol oxidase (PO) activity. However, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was not influenced. When the shrimp was artificially challenged with Vibrio alginolyticus, slight mortality reduction was observed in the probiotics-treated group (100 vs. 79%). In conclusion, the production of cultured whiteleg shrimp at low salinity might be increased by probiotics survivable at low salinity levels.

Six locations in the automated monitoring network at the Geum River Basin were selected forthis study. The water quality characteristics at two of the locations in the water quality monitoring network that were identical, or nearby, were examined, and their correlations were evaluated through statistical analysis. The results of the water quality analysis were converted to the water quality index and expressed in grades for comparison. For the data necessary for the study, public data from four years, from 2016-2019 were used and the evaluation parameters were water temperature, pH, EC, DO, TOC, TN, and TP. Results of the analysis showed that the water quality concentrations measured in the automated monitoring network and the water quality monitoring network differed in some measured values, but they tended to register variation in a specified ratio in most of the locations in the network. The analysis of the correlations of the parameters between the two monitoring networks found that water temperature, EC, and DO showed high correlations between the two monitoring networks. The TOC, TN, and TP showed high correlations, with a 0.7 or higher (correlation coefficient r), with the exception of some of the monitoring networks, although their correlations were lower than those of the basic parameters. The water quality index analysis showed that the water quality index values of the automated monitoring network and the water quality monitoring network were similar. The water quality index decreased and the pollution degree increased in the downstream direction, in both networks.
We proposed a numerical method to simulate the hydro-mechanical behavior of rock fracture using a grain-based distinct element model (GBDEM) in the paper. As a part of DECOVALEX-2023 Task G, we verified the method via benchmarks with analytical solutions. DECOVALEX-2023 Task G aims to develop a numerical method to estimate the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical processes within the crystalline rock fracture network. We represented the rock sample as a group of tetrahedral grains and calculated the interaction of the grains and their interfaces using 3DEC. The micro-parameters of the grains and interfaces were determined by a new methodology based on an equivalent continuum approach. In benchmark modeling, a single fracture embedded in the rock was examined for the effects of fracture inclination and roughness, the boundary stress condition and the applied pressure. The simulation results showed that the developed numerical model reasonably reproduced the fracture slip induced by boundary stress condition, the fracture opening induced by fluid injection, the stress distribution variation with fracture inclination, and the fracture roughness effect. In addition, the fracture displacements associated with the opening and slip showed good agreement with the analytical solutions. We expect the numerical model to be enhanced by continuing collaboration and interaction with other research teams of DECOVALEX-2023 Task G and validated in further study experiments.
The influence of Soil-Water Characteristic Curve (SWCC) fitting parameters for an unsaturated natural slope was evaluated through seepage and slope stability analysis as a function of rainfall. Soil samples were collected from the study area in Jirisan National Park and the physical and mechanical characteristics of unsaturated soil layers were measured in laboratory tests. The saturation depth was calculated via seepage analysis by changing fitting parameters α, the parameter related to the Air Entry Value (AEV) and n, the parameter related to the slope of the SWCC in the range of natural conditions. Slope stability analysis using the limit equilibrium method considered the calculated depth of saturation. Results from seepage analysis for various rainfall conditions indicate the saturation depth in the soil layer suddenly increased as the fitting parameter α decreased; the saturation time for the entire soil layer also decreased. Slope stability analysis considering the calculated depth of saturation shows that the slope safety factor rapidly decreased as the fitting parameter α decreased, whereas the variation in slope safety factor was very small when n increased. Hence, fitting parameter α has a large effect on saturation depth during rainfall and therefore on slope stability, whereas slope stability is relatively unaffected by the fitting parameter n.

This study estimates the region of freshwater influence (ROFI) by Han River discharge in the Yeomha channel, Gyeonggi Bay. A 3-D numerical model, which is validated for reproducibility of variation in current velocity and salinity, is applied in Gyeonggi Bay. Distance of freshwater influence (DOFI) is defined as the distance from the entrance of Yeomha channel to the point where surface salinity is 28 psu. Model scenarios were constructed by dividing the Han River discharge into 10 categories (200~10,000 m3/s). The relation equation between freshwater discharge and DOFI was calculated based on performing a non-linear regression analysis. ROFI in Yeomha channel expands from the southern sea area of Ganghwa-do to the northern sea area of Yeongheung-do as the intensity of Han River discharge increases. The discharge and DOFI are a proportional relationship, and the increase rate of DOFI gradually decreases as discharge increases. Based on the relation equation calculated in this study, DOFI in the Yeomha channel can be estimated through the monthly mean Han River discharge. Accordingly, it will be possible to respond and predict problems related to damage to water quality and ecology due to rapid freshwater runoff.

This study was carried out to investigate the feasibility of reducing clean cover soil using a flooded column test in arsenic-contaminated farmland reclamation of abandoned coal mine area that shows generally low or about worrisome level (25 mg/kg) of Korea soil environment conservation act unlike abandoned metal mine. During the monitoring period of soil solution for 4 months, chemical properties (pH, EC, ORP, Fe, Mn, Ca, and As) in each layer (clean soil cover and contaminated/stabilized soil) showed different variation. This result revealed that soil solution in stabilized or contaminated soil rarely affected that in cover soil. Whether stabilized or not, arsenic concentrations in the rice roots grown in the soil covers with the thickness of 40 cm decreased by 98% in compared with the that grown in the control soil. In case of the soil covers with 20 cm thickness on stabilized soil, it decreased by 80% and this was 22 percentage point higher than when the soil of lower layer was not stabilized. Thus, reducing clean cover soil could be possible in contaminated farmland soil reclamation if appropriate stabilization of contaminated soil is carried.
