A Study on Low Back Pain Prevalence Rate and Related Factors among Emergency Medical Technicians Working at Fire Stations (소방서에 근무하는 응급의료종사자의 요통 유병 실태 및 관련 요인 분석)

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to identify low pain prevalence rate and factors affecting low back pain in emergency medical technicians. Method: A descriptive relationship research design was utilized. The participants were 74 emergency medical technicians who worked at fire stations in W and J city and agreed to participate in this study. Data were collected between April and August 2008 using a questionnaire, which included demographic factors, severity of low back pain using a visual analog scale, factors related to low back pain and health behavior, and BMI. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression were performed for data analysis. Results: 85.1% of emergency medical technicians experienced low back pain. The mean score of low back pain was relatively low (M=4.0, SD=2.33). Significant factors affecting low back pain were found to be age, marital status, exercise, hours of standing work, and BMI. These variables explained 35.1% of variance in low back pain (F=8.45, p<.001). Conclusion: These results suggest that further research is needed to develop interventions for prevention and management of low back pain among emergency medical technicians.

Effects of educational intervention on single-rescuer respiratory-assistant therapy using a bag valve mask (백-밸브-마스크를 이용한 1인 호흡보조요법 교육의 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the effects of educational intervention on pre-test and post-test tidal volume, endotracheal peak pressure, and ventilation interval measurements during single-rescuer respiratory-assistant therapy by paramedic students. Methods: The present study, with a quasi-experimental design, included a pre-test and post-test nonequivalent control group. A total of 62 paramedic students (31, experimental group; 31, control group) participated in this study. The intervention lasted 80 minutes. Data were collected from each student before the intervention and two weeks after the intervention, between September 3 and 21, 2018. The collected data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 25.0. Results: Tidal volume (p<.001) and endotracheal peak pressure (p=.002) measurements after the intervention were significantly different between the two groups. Analysis of covariance was used to control the variance (the pretest value of endotracheal peak pressure) in order to identify the effect of the intervention in the two groups. Endotracheal peak pressure was not significantly different between the two groups. Conclusion: Education and training of paramedic students in emergency medical services on single-rescuer respiratory-assistant therapy is necessary for the emergency care of patients with respiratory arrest.

Carbon Assimilation and Respiration of Daphnia magna with Varying Algal Food Quality

  • To elucidate the mechanisms by which algal food quality affect Daphnia growths, we measured carbon incorporation rates and respiration rates of Daphnia magna with Cryptomonad Rhodomonas minuta, green algae Scenedesmus acutus and cyanobacteria Synechococcus sp. with varying physiological states as food. Carbon assimilation rates were high with R. minuta and S. acutus and low with Synechococcus sp. showing a similar pattern to the growth rate pattern. There was no clear difference among respiration rates of three algal species. Carbon assimilation rates and respiration rates of D. magna appeared to be independent on Molar C:P ratios in algal foods. Carbon growth efficiencies (incorporated carbon per assimilated carbon amount) were lower when D. magna fed with Synechococcus sp. than fed with R. minuta or S. acutus. Analysis of variance results show that carbon assimilation rates which were sum of incorporation and respiration rates and carbon growth efficiencies were only dependant on species affiliation. Overall, our results showed that algal species with varying ${\omega}3$ polyunsaturated fatty acid content led different carbon incorporation rates and overall carbon assimilation rates of D. magna.

The influences of organizational conflict and job satisfaction on the turnover intention of dental technicians (치과기공사의 조직 내 갈등 및 직무 만족이 이직 의도에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: This study aimed at exploring the impacts of organizational conflict and job satisfaction on the turnover intention among dental technicians. Methods: This study utilized a descriptive research design. A structured questionnaire was administered to 159 dental technicians. Of the collected questionnaires, data from 127 valid questionnaires were analyzed using t-tests, analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and hierarchical multiple regression using the IBM SPSS 20.0 statistical package. Results: A positive correlation was identified between organizational conflict and turnover intention (r=0.46, p<0.001); however, a negative correlation was shown between job satisfaction and turnover intention (r=-0.50, p<0.001). A hierarchical multiple-regression model was employed to analyze working hours, unfair treatment from dentists and dental hygienists, organizational conflict, and job satisfaction, which contributed to providing an explanation to 39% of the turnover intention of dental technicians (F=14.16, p<0.001). Furthermore, organizational conflict (β=0.32, p<0.001), job satisfaction (β=-0.31, p=0.003), and working hours (β=0.21, p=0.010) were all shown to affect turnover intention. Conclusion: The impact of the negative consequences of organizational conflict and working hours on the turnover intention should be considered within core strategies for increasing the turnover periods for dental technicians.

Development of a Tool to Measure Maternal Behavior for Health Promotion for Preschool Children with Disabilities (학령전기 장애아동의 건강증진을 위한 어머니의 행위 측정도구 개발)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develope a tool to assess mothers' behavior related to healt promotion if their preschool children had disabillties. Method: The research design was a methodological study. This tool was developed in 4 stages: first, a content matrix as a conceptual framework was developed using Gordon's 11 functional health promotion patterns and 5 categories (Lee, Jung & An, 1996); second,40 preliminary items were selected through references and interviews with 9 mothers of children with disabilities; third, 2 items were discarded after content validity was done by 3 experts; fourth, reliability and validity were tested with a sample of 243 mothers of children with disabilities who were of preschool age. Results: The final tool consisted of 19 items and Cronbach's alpha coefficient for internal consistency was .82. Five factors were extracted by factor analysis and they explained 55.58% of the total variance. Conclusions: This tool was identified to have a high degree of reliability and validity. So it can be utilized to assess mothers' behavior in providing health promotion for their children who have disabilities.

Factors influencing clinical nurses' advocacy for people with disability (장애인에 대한 임상간호사의 옹호간호 영향요인)

  • Purpose: Clinical nurses are the ideal health care providers to advocate for vulnerable and underserved populations such as people with disability. This study aimed to understand factors influencing nursing advocacy for people with disability among clinical nurses. Methods: The subjects of this study were 186 clinical nurses who were working in three hospitals in B and D cities. Self-report questionnaires were used to collect the data. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 25 with descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis. Results: Clinical experience and esthetical nursing competency have positive correlations with nursing advocacy, and optimism-human rights has a negative correlation with nursing advocacy. Factors influencing nursing advocacy for people with disability were identified as patient directivity (β=0.36, p=.001), optimism-human rights (β=-0.18, p=.008) and clinical experience (≥10) (β=0.14, p=.036). The final model consisting of these factors explained 19% of the variance of nursing advocacy (F=14.99, p=.001). Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate the importance of developing and implementing nursing interventions that can improve patient directivity and optimism-human rights toward people with disability among clinical nurses. These nursing advocacy interventions can be provided as part of continuing education as well as the nursing curriculum.

Analysis of the Effects of a Health Policy Capacity Development Education Program as a Public-Private Partnership Model in Official Development Assistance for Health Policy Administrators (공적개발원조와 민관협력 사업에서의 보건정책 역량강화 교육 프로그램 효과 분석)

  • Purpose: This study analyzed the effects of a health policy capacity development education program as a publicprivate partnership (PPP) model in official development assistance (ODA) for health policy administrators. Methods: Between October 2015 and September 2017, 41 participants from underdeveloped countries completed the three-week education program at K university, following the official selection process of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and each country's embassy. Results: The effects of the health policy capacity development education program differed significantly according to participants' age (p=.043), country region (p=.045), and academic or professional degree (p=.007). Academic or professional degree significantly predicted the effects of the program (β=.41, p=.007), explaining 21.7% of the variance in the regression model. Conclusion: The current selection process for ODA program participants considers recommendations from each country's embassy to determine eligible candidates. The hosting institution's opinions or suggestions regarding participants' professional expertise or work experience, country region, or demographic characteristics should also be considered in the participant selection process.

Peer and Parental Influences on Adolescent Smoking

  • Purpose. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between peer and parental factors and smoking behavior of adolescents in urban cities and to investigate whether there are gender differences. Methods. A stratified and random cluster sampling design was used to obtain a cross-sectional sample of high school students in two urban cities. The sample consisted of 512 Korean adolescents (256 boys and 256 girls) aged 15 to 18 (mean age 16.7$\pm$.58). Self-reported questionnaire consisted of adolescent smoking behavior, peer smoking and alcohol use, parental smoking and alcohol use, father-mother-peer relationships and perceived social support from peers and parents. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to examine the hypothesized model. Results. The findings showed that peer and parental factors accounted for $30.3\%$ of the variance in adolescent smoking and peer smoking was most strongly associated with adolescent smoking behavior (OR = 10.18). In addition, peer smoking (OR = 4.71), peer alcohol use (OR = 4.21), and peer relationships (OR = 1.03) were significantly associated with boys' smoking behavior. In girls, peer smoking (OR = 26.50) and parent smoking (OR = 5.48) were significantly associated with smoking behavior. Conclusions. Consistent with previous findings, peer smoking is a significant factor on adolescent smoking. Specifically, boys would be more influenced from peers than girls. Therefore, smoking prevention programs for adolescents might be focused on the social context such as, resisting to peer pressure and enhancing the self-efficacy to control.

Effects of Empowerment and Job Satisfaction on Nursing Performance of Clinical Nurses (간호사의 임파워먼트와 직무만족이 간호업무성과에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify factors that affect nursing performance; Those factors are personal characteristics, sub-categories of empowerment and job satisfaction of clinical nurses. Methods: Data were collected from November 24, 2012 to March 11, 2013, and participants were 451 hospital nurses in 6 hospitals. Descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression were used for data analysis. Results: Nurses who were older, married, highly educated, in the position of charge nurse, and with longer clinical careers showed relatively higher empowerment, higher job satisfaction, and higher nursing performance than others. Also, there were strong correlations between nursing performance and empowerment (r=.576)/job satisfaction (r=.617). Factors predicted nursing performance were relationship with coworkers (${\beta}=.398$), duty (${\beta}=.181$), promotion system (${\beta}=.134$), and turnover intention (${\beta}=-.109$). Factors predicting job satisfaction were competency of empowerment (${\beta}=.249$), and clinical career (${\beta}=.151$). These 6 factors explained 55.2% of the variance in nursing performance (F=93.37, <.001). Conclusion: Regarding human resource management, relationship with co-workers is a changeable factor. Therefore nursing organizations should apply these factors in human resource management to enhance nursing performance and achieve organizational goals.

Awareness and Information Acquisition Behavior Regarding Food Hygiene and Safety of College Students in Yeungnam Region (영남지역 대학생의 식품 위생 및 안전성에 대한 인식도와 정보획득행동에 관한 연구)

  • This study examined awareness and information acquisition behavior regarding food hygiene and safety and information search behavior of college students. The sample was obtained from 284 students in Yeungnam region through a self-administered questionnaire. To describe characteristics of the respondents, frequency distributions were used. In addition, $t$ tests, analysis of variance and Duncan multiple range tests were conducted. Data were analyzed by SPSS Windows V.18.0. The results of the study were as follows: (1) most respondents were concerned about food hygiene and safety. They were mostly interested in the expiration date label on breads, milk/dairy products, fish products and meat products, and price of cookies. Many respondents answered that foods produced and distributed in Korea were not safe. The respondents were most worried about endocrine disruptors among various food risk factors. The respondents received information on food hygiene and safety from blogs, mini-homepages, or Kin-searches on the Internet, electronic media, and food labeling in decreasing order.
