  • Purpose: To survey the social distance of nursing students toward minority groups (immigrants, foreign workers, Saeteomins, and foreign students) and compare them according to general and multicultural characteristics. Methods: The subjects were 409 students from two nursing schools at G metropolitan city. Data were collected with self-reported questionnaires from April 2012 to June 2012, and analyzed by descriptive statistics (t-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Scheffe test) using the SPSS/WIN 17.0 program. Results: The mean scores of social distance were $1.90{\pm}0.57$ (out of 4 points) and scores significantly differed according to religion (t=3.095, p=.002), tourist experiences in foreign countries (t=-2.651, p=.008), and for Asian background of minority groups. There were also differences according to the number of foreign friends(F=4.924, p=.008) and duration of friendships(F=3.913, p=.021). Conclusion: The level of social distance of nursing students was lower than average but needs to be reduced. We suggest further studies on the social distance toward each minority group and the development of valid scales for social distance and its related variables.

  • Maintaining maximum genetic variability is of critical importance with in-situ conservation of animal species in small populations. Marker-assisted mating (MAM) was suggested to achieve maximum heterozygosity in offspring populations. The aims of this research was to investigate and decide the effectiveness and promising types of MAM to achieve this goal. Analysis of variance with simulation data revealed that the heterozygosity in offspring populations was significantly determined by sire heterozygosity from mating of non-inbred parent animals, and significantly by sire heterozygosity and percent parental difference in offspring reproduced by inbred parents. Seven types of marker-assisted mating schemes were examined, in which offspring exhibited heterozygosity that was -0.01 to 7.37% below or above that from random mating of non-inbred parent animals, and 0.00 to 16.39% above that from random mating of inbred parent animals. The great increase in offspring heterozygosity was observed with mating by tandem maximizing sire heterozygosity, percent parental difference, and dam heterozygosity. Random mating resulted in fluctuation of offspring heterozygosity. These results suggested that MAM was a promising method for maintaining maximum offspring variability in in-situ conservation of animal species in small populations.

  • A reproductive potential trial using randomized complete block design with $3{\times}3{\times}2$ factorial, was conducted on 84 Baluchi yearling ewes. Ewes grazed on rangeland dominated by Artemisia maritime and Holoxylon grifthii with or without flushing and supplementation of barley grain (BG) and cotton-seed-cake (CSC) during premating, late pregnancy and lactation of 90 days. Analysis of variance revealed that conception rate which ranged 64.28 to 85.71, was significantly greater (p<.05) in ewes flushed with CSC followed by ewes under BG or control feeding regimes. During the gestation period, liveweight of ewes changed from 31.24 to 21.2 kg. A loss of 32% of initial body weight was observed at lambing. Losses in live weight of ewes, regardless the supplementation, were uniform and non-significantly different. Live weight of ewes at lambing and weaning were also similar. Birth weight of lambs was significantly different at p<.05. Lambs born to larger ewes seemed to be heavier than lighter ones. Lambs suckling to ewes with losses in body weight during lactation gained more weight which was significantly different at p<.05. In the paper, factors affecting the conception rate, changes in liveweight of ewes during gestation and lactation and subsequently growth of lambs are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to understand clinical nurses' knowledge and attitudes on pain management. The subject of the study were 254 nurses working at two hospitals affiliated with a university in Seoul. The questionnaires included four areas: general knowledge on pain, knowledge on the use of analgesia, knowledge and implementation on the pain assessment scales and pain interventions and nurses' general characteristics. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, LSD test and t-test using SPSS statistical package. The results were as follows. 1. The mean score of the general pain knowledge was 61.46 and that of knowledge on the use of analgesia was 52.19. 2. Most nurses(74%) answered with hesitation about injecting narcotic analgesia to patients. 3. The pain assessment scale which nurses knew (57.5%) and used(48.0%) extremely was a simple descriptive scale. 4. The pain intervention which nurses knew (94.5%) and implemented(92.1%) extremely was to inject analgesia. 5. The number of nurses who had learned about pain management was 49 of 254(19.3%). 6. Nurses' knowledge on the use of analgesia was of relevance to having learned pain management, but general pain knowledge was not so relevant. According to this research, I suggest the following. 1. It is necessary to develop an education program with actual practice and intervention which nurses can perform for themselves. 2. It is necessary to continuously educate about pain management in clinical wards.

  • Purpose: The purposes of this study were to identify nurses' empathy, attitude and pain management for patients with dementia and the factors associated with their performance of pain management. Methods: The study design was a cross-sectional survey. The participants in the study were 114 nurses working at 12 geriatric hospitals. This study utilized the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI), which measures four empathy factors. Nurses' attitudes toward pain and performance of pain management, and general and pain related characteristics were measured by self-administered questionnaires. Results: Barriers to pain management for patients with dementia were absence of guidelines, prejudice of pain in dementia, and lack of time and knowledge deficit. There was a significant positive correlation between empathic concern and attitudes, perspective-taking of empathy and pain management. There was also a correlation between empathy and pain management. Stepwise linear regression analysis indicated that the significant factors affecting the performance of pain management included perspective-taking of empathy, use of pain management in dementia guideline and attitudes toward pain. These factors explained 24.0% of variance. Conclusion: The findings from this study suggest that empathy and positive attitude are the important provider attributes which needs to be enhanced by educational programs. It is also necessary to develop and disseminate guidelines for a dementia specific pain management.

  • Three generalized additive models were applied to the distribution of anchovy eggs and oceanographic factors to determine the occurrence of anchovy spawning grounds in Korean waters and to identify the indicators of their occurrence using survey data from the spring and summer of 1985, 1995, and 2002. Binomial and Gaussian types of generalized additive models (GAM) and quantile generalized additive models (QGAM) revealed that egg density was influenced mostly by ocean temperature and salinity in spring, and the vertical structure of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and zooplankton biomass during summer in the upper quantiles of egg density. The GAM and QGAM model deviance explained 18.5-63.2% of the egg distribution in summer in the East and West Sea. For the principle component analysis-based GAMs, the variance explained by the final regression model was 27.3-67.0%, higher than the regular models and QGAMs for egg density in the East and West Sea. By analyzing the distribution of anchovy eggs off the Korean coast, our results revealed the optimal temperature and salinity conditions, in addition to high production and high vertical mixing, as the key indicators of the major spawning grounds of anchovies.

  • When considering the proper function and life cycle length of a product, its surface finish plays an important role. This experimental study was carried out to understand the effect of input factors on surface roughness and how it can be minimized by controlling the input parameters. This experimental work was performed by machining the surface of STD 61 blocks with a surface inclined at $30^{\circ}$ by ball end-milling and optimizing the input parameters using the Taguchi technique. Signal-to-Noise (S/N) ratio and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were applied to find the significance of the input parameters. The optimum level of input parameters to minimize surface roughness was obtained.

  • In this paper, the response surface modeling of the control of the pretilt angle in the nematic liquid crystal on the homogeneous polyimide surface with different surface treatment is investigated. The pretilt angle is one of the main factors to determine the alignment of the liquid crystal display. The pretilt angle is measured to analyze the variation of the characteristics on the various process conditions. The rubbing strength and the hard baking temperature are considered as input factors. After the design of experiments is performed, the process model is then explored using the response surface methodology. The analysis of variance is used to analyze the statistical significance and the effect plots are also investigated to examine the relationship between the process parameters and the response.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand care workers' fall-related knowledge and caring behaviors for fall prevention in nursing home. Methods: This study was a descriptive survey study. Data have been collected from 125 care workers in 5 nursing homes. Data were analyzed using frequency, t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Pearson correlation coefficients. Results: 1) The average percentage of correct answers for care workers' fall-related knowledge was 72.2%. There were significant differences in fall-related knowledge by age, experiences of re-education about care for fall injuries, and experiences to transfer fall patients to another hospital. 2) The average level of care workers' caring behaviors for fall prevention was 3.81 points out of 4. There were significant differences by experiences of education about care for fall injuries in nursing home and concern of fall injury prevention. 3) There was a significant correlation between fall-related knowledge and caring behaviors for fall prevention (r=.320, p<.001). Conclusion: The level of fall-related knowledge is positively correlated to the level of caring behaviors for fall prevention. Therefore, nurses should prepare education programs to increase care workers' fall-related knowledge and caring behaviors for fall prevention.
