  • This paper presents a modeling and simulation of a fuzzy controller for maximum power extraction of a grid-connected wind energy conversion system with a link of a rectifier and an inverter. It discusses the maximum power control algorithm for a wind turbine and proposes, in a graphical form, the relationships of wind turbine output, rotor speed, power coefficient, tip-speed ratio with wind speed when the wind turbine is operated under the maximum power control. The control objective is to always extract maximum power from wind and transfer the power to the utility by controlling both the pitch angle of the wind turbine blades and the inverter firing angle. Pitch control method is mechanically complicated, but the control performance is better than that of the stall regulation method. The simulation results performed on MATLAB will show the variation of generator's rotor angle and rotor speed, pitch angle, and generator output.

  • This paper proposes a strategy of flicker mitigation for doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) wind turbine systems. In the weak grid system where the grid impedance ratio is low, the reactive power compensation only cannot suppress the flicker sufficiently due to the limited power capacity of the converters or the DFIG. For the full suppression of flickers, the active power smoothening using the energy storage system (ESS) needs to be utilized together with the reactive power compensation. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by PSCAD/EMTDC simulation results for a 2[MW] DFIG wind turbine system and by experimental results for a 3[kW] wind turbine simulator.

  • This paper proposes a variable speed control scheme of grid-connected wind power generation systems using cage-type induction generators. The induction generator is operated in indirect vector control mode, where the d-axis current controls the excitation level and the q-axis current controls the generator torque, by which the speed of the induction generator is controlled according to the variation of the wind speed In order to produce the maximum output power. The generated power flows into the utility grid through the back-to-back PWM converter. The line-side converter controls the dc link voltage by the q-axis current control and can control the line-side power factor by the d-axis current control. Experimental results are shown to verify the validity of the proposed scheme.

  • In this paper the principles and structure of a WTS (Wind Turbine Simulator) are described. The proposed WTS is a versatile system specially designed for the purpose of developing and testing new control strategies for wind energy conversion systems. The simulator includes two sub-systems; a torque controller which controls a 3-phase induction motor in order to simulate the wind turbine and wind speed generator which can simulate an actual wind speed. In order to make the proposed system working in real-time, two sub-systems are incorporated into one simulink block by using Real-time workshop. The performance of the proposed system is verified by considering various wind speeds.

  • In this paper, a wind power simulator is designed and implemented. To realize the torque of wind blade, a DC motor is used as a variable torque input device. An induction machine is used as a generator of which speed is controlled to maintain the optimal tip speed ratio during wind speed change. Input torque of system is controlled by armature current of DC motor and speed is controlled by generator control unit using field oriented control algorithm. Various control algorithms such as MPPT, soft start up, the simulator reactive power control, can be developed and tested using the simulator.

  • In this paper, mathematically modeled equations were derived for wind turbine under the analysis of aerodynamics. On the basis of these equations, maximum power controller is implemented by simulink in matlab. In order to achieving maximum power, variable speed control method is used for obtaining maximum power coefficient in the variable wind speed because we can have maximum changing efficiency in these coefficients. Also, the maximum power control of wind generator system uses a synchronous generator and a invertor circuit.

  • Wind farm grid codes require wind generators to ride through voltage sags, which means that normal power production should be re-initiated once the nominal grid voltage has been recovered. Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) based wind farm is gaining popularity these days because of its inherent advantages like variable speed operation and independent controllability of active and reactive power over conventional Induction Generator (IG). This paper proposes a new control strategy using DFIGs for stabilizing a wind farm composed of DFIGs and IGs. Simulation analysis by using PSCAD/EMTDC shows that the DFIGs can effectively stabilize the IGs and hence the entire wind farm through the proposed control scheme by providing sufficient reactive power to the system.

  • This paper presents the general results of the conceptual design of a 3MW class offshore wind turbine named WinDS 3000 under development. In WinDS 3000, an integrated drive train design, three stage gearbox and permanent magnet generator (PMG) with fully rated converters have been introduced. A pitch regulated variable speed power control with individual pitch control has been adopted to regulate rotor torque while generator reaction torque can be adjusted almost instantaneously by the associated power electronics. Through the introduction of WinDS 3000, it is expected that helpful to understanding of the development status of 3MW offshore wind turbine.
