  • This paper proposes a flywheel hybrid vehicle to solve the energy crisis problem by the exhaustion of a fossil fuel and air pollution for the conservation of environment. The proposed flywheel hybrid vehicle is composed of an accumulator and a flywheel as the energy generation and storage component and three variable displacement hydraulic pump/motors as the energy transfer devices. Flywheel has the characteristics of high energy density and easy energy absorption and consumption. The effectiveness of the energy-saving of the proposed flywheel hybrid vehicle is verified by simulation using Matlab/simulink. First of ail, analytical modeling for the flywheel hybrid vehicle is presented and simulations are performed based on the experimental efficiency data of a variable displacement pump/motor. The results of the simulation show that the effect of energy savings is realized by the proposed hybrid vehicle in 3 different city driving patterns.

  • This paper presents the design of block lengths for irregular low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes based on the maximum variable degree $d_{{\upsilon},max}$. To design a block length, the performance degradation of belief-propagation (BP) decoding performance from upper bounds on the maximum likelihood (ML) decoding performance is used as an important factor. Since for large block lengths, the performance of irregular LDPC codes is very close to the Shannon limit, we focus on moderate block lengths ($5{\times}10^2\;{\leq}\;N\;{\leq}\;4{\times}10^3$). Given degree distributions, the purpose of our paper is to find proper block lengths based on the maximum variable degree $d_{{\upsilon},max}$. We also present some simulation results which show how a block length can be optimized.

  • Baltic Dry Index (BDI) is difficult to forecast because of the high volatility and complexity. To improve the BDI forecasting ability, this study apply Bayesian variable selection method with a large number of predictors. Our estimation results based on the BDI and all predictors from January 2000 to September 2021 indicate that the out-of-sample prediction ability of the ADL model with the variable selection is superior to that of the AR model in terms of point and density forecasting. We also find that critical predictors for the BDI change over forecasts horizon. The lagged BDI are being selected as an key predictor at all forecasts horizon, but commodity price, the clarksea index, and interest rates have additional information to predict BDI at mid-term horizon. This implies that time variations of predictors should be considered to predict the BDI.

  • To improve the performance of high temperature superconducting current leads, variable cross-sectional area is considered. The cross-sectional area is varied as a function of current density to fix the safety factor along lead length. New integration method is devised to find optimum cross-sectional area distribution. New design of current lead has low heat leak into cryostat and less material than constant cross-sectional area leads. Conduction cooled lead is considered. The developed method is applied to Bi2223 current leads sheathed Ag-Au alloy.

  • In general a hydraulic system which uses a single rod hydraulic as an actuator is modeled as a nonlinear system and reveals uncertain Parameter characteristics such as the density variation of hydraulic oil and is subject to load variations and severe disturbances during operation. A variable design-parameter fuzzy PID controller is adopted to solve these undesirable internal and external problems and its effectiveness is verified through computer simulations for control performance and real time control possibility.

  • OBJECTIVES : A fog generated field test was conducted to analyze the relationship between different sizes of variable speed limit signs and the legibility distance under various fog density conditions. By using this study, appropriate sizes of signs can be selected depending on the density of fog. METHODS : An actual tunnel was selected as the area for this test, as other places cannot maintain the fog condition because of rapid air current. A total 121 subjects were recruited for this test, which took place over the course of four days. The test on the first day was conducted under normal weather conditions for comparison. Visibility-distance detecting sensor was used to measure the visibility distance due to the fog density time, simultaneously with the evaluation of legibility distance by subjects. RESULTS : The test results show the relationship between the different sizes of signs and the legibility distance corresponding to the visibility distance due to both non-fog and fog generated conditions. According to the technical test results, appreciable amount of reduction in legibility distance due to fog was resulted in all sizes of signs. Moreover, the legibility distance is reduced proportionately with the decrease in the visibility distance due to fog. CONCLUSIONS : The results of this study can be used to select appropriate sizes of valuable speed signs under fog conditions. Hence, drivers can expect to have more room to respond to adverse weather conditions, thereby reducing the risk of accidents.

  • OBJECTIVES : A fog generated field test was conducted to analyze the relationship between the luminance of variable speed-limit signs and the legibility distance under various fog density conditions. By using this study, appropriate luminance values can be selected depending on the density of fog. METHODS : An actual tunnel was selected as the area to conduct the test, as other places cannot maintain the fog condition because of rapid air current. Ninety-two subjects were recruited for this test, which took place during the course of three days. Visibility-distance detecting sensor was used to measure the visibility distance due to the fog density time, simultaneously with the evaluation of legibility distance by subjects. RESULTS : The test results show the relationship between luminance values and the legibility distance corresponding to the visibility distance due to fog. According to the technical test results, lower luminance value such as $7000cd/m^2$ corresponds to less legibility distance compared to higher values such as $20000cd/m^2$ or $40000cd/m^2$. However, the amount of difference between $20000cd/m^2$ and $40000cd/m^2$ is negligible in our test. CONCLUSIONS : The results of this study can be used to select appropriate luminance of valuable speed signs under fog conditions. Hence, drivers can expect to have more room to respond to adverse weather conditions, thereby reducing the risk of accidents.

  • The log-density ratio of the conditional densities of the predictors given the response variable provides useful information for variable selection in the logistic regression model. In this paper, we consider the predictors that are needed and how they should be included in the model. If the conditional distributions are skewed, the distributions can be considered as gamma distributions. Under this assumption, linear and log terms are generally included in the model. The log-odds graph is a very useful graphical tool in this study. A graphical study is presented which shows that if the conditional distributions of x|y for the two groups overlap significantly, we need both the linear and quadratic terms. On the contrary, if they are well separated, only the linear or log term is needed in the model.

  • We investigate and analyze the effect of population density on digital divide in Africa by applying the panel data analysis therein. From the estimation results based on the panel data analysis, it has been found that population density as well as both levels of income and education has a significant effect on the digital divide in African region. In particular, the fact that the variable of population density makes a significantly influential role implies that the construction cost of information infrastructure in Africa behaves such a considerable obstacle to Africa wishing to enter into information society. In conclusion, throughout the integration of the estimation results in the paper, the following implications for economic cooperation with Africa can be drawn. The estimation results mentioned above strongly imply that the variable referred to as population density should be considered in selecting which countries to assist for construction of information infrastructure.

  • Zone conditional formulations for the Reynolds average reaction progress variable are used to derive an asymptotic expression for turbulent burning velocity. New DNS runs are performed for validation in a statistically one dimensional steady state configuration. Parametric study is performed with respect to turbulent intensity, integral length scale, density ratio and laminar flame speed. Results show good agreement between DNS results and the asymptotic expression in terms of measured maximum flame surface density and estimated turbulent diffusivity in unburned gas.
