This study reports the results of a series of tests of pultruded glass fiber reinforced polymer (P-GFRP) box section composite profile columns, geometrically similar with/without concrete core, containing 0-1-2-3% steel fiber, with different lengths. The recycled steel wires were obtained from waste tyres. The effects of steel fiber ratio on the collapse and size effect of concrete filled P-GFRP columns under axial pressure were investigated experimentally and analytically. A total of 36 columns were tested under compression. The presence of pultruded profile and steel wire ratio were selected as the primary variable. The capacity of pultruded profiles with infilled concrete are averagely 9.3 times higher than the capacity of concrete without pultruded profile. The capacity of pultruded profiles with infilled concrete are averagely 34% higher than that of the pultruded profiles without infilled concrete. The effects of steel wire ratio are more pronounced in slender columns which exhibit buckling behavior. Moreover, the proposed analytical approach to calculate the capacity of P-GFRP columns successfully predicted the experimental findings in terms of both pure axial and buckling capacity.

This paper presents a significant contribution to aided design by conducting an analytical examination of geometric links with the aim of establishing criteria for assessing an analogy measure of the extrinsic geometric and kinematic characteristics of the Variable Compression Ratio (VCR) engine with a Geared Mechanism (GBCM) in comparison to the existing Fixed Compression Ratio (FCR) engine with a Standard-Reciprocating Crankshaft configuration. Employing a mechanical approach grounded in projective computational methods, a parametric study has been conducted to analyze the kinematic behavior and geometric transformations of the moving links. The findings indicate that in order to ensure equivalent extrinsic behavior and maintain consistent input-output performance between both engine types, precise adjustments of intrinsic geometric parameters are necessary. Specifically, for a VCR configuration compared to an FCR configuration, regardless of compression ratio and gearwheel radius, for the same crankshaft ratios and stroke lengths, it is imperative to halve lengths of connecting rods, and crank radius. These insights underscore the importance of meticulous parameter adjustment in achieving comparable performance across different engine configurations, offering valuable implications for design optimization.

A differential index assignment scheme is proposed for the image encoding system in which a variable-length tree-structured vector quantizer is adopted. Each source vector is quantized into a terminal node of VLTSVQ and each terminal node is represented as a unique binary vector. The proposed index assignment scheme utilizes the correlation between interblocks of the image to increase the compression ratio with the image quality maintained. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves a much higher compression ratio than the conventional one does and that the amount of the bit rate reduction of the proposed scheme becomes large as the correlation of the image becomes large. The proposed encoding scheme can be effectively used to encode R images whose pixel values we, in general, highly correlated with those of the neighbor pixels.

Strengthening slender reinforced concrete (RC) columns is a challenge. They are susceptible to overall buckling that induces bending moment and axial compression. This study presents the precise three-dimensional finite element modeling of slender RC columns strengthened with fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites sheets with various patterns under concentric or eccentric compression. The slenderness ratio λ (height/width ratio) of the studied columns ranged from 15 to 35. First, to determine the optimal modeling procedure, nine alternative nonlinear finite element models were presented to simulate the experimental behavior of seven FRP-strengthened slender RC columns under eccentric compression. The models simulated concrete behavior under compression and tension, FRP laminate sheets with different fiber orientations, crack propagation, FRP-concrete interface, and eccentric compression. Then, the validated modeling procedure was applied to simulate 58 FRP-strengthened slender RC columns under compression with minor eccentricity to represent the inevitable geometric imperfections. The simulated columns showed two cross sections (square and rectangular), variable λ values (15, 22, and 35), and four strengthening patterns for FRP sheet layers (hoop H, longitudinal L, partial longitudinal Lw, and longitudinal coupled with hoop LH). For λ=15-22, pattern L showed the highest strengthening effectiveness, pattern Lw showed brittle failure, steel reinforcement bars exhibited compressive yielding, ties exhibited tensile yielding, and concrete failed under compression. For λ>22, pattern Lw outperformed pattern L in terms of the strengthening effectiveness relative to equivalent weight of FRP layers, steel reinforcement bars exhibited crossover tensile strain, and concrete failed under tension. Patterns H and LH (compared with pattern L) showed minor strengthening effectiveness.

In this paper, a new formula for primary and secondary thrust of metal belt CVT is proposed considering variation of band tension, block compression and active arc for each of the primary and secondary pulleys. For the secondary thrust, effective friction coefficient is introduced considering the effect of flange deflection. Nondimensional primary and secondary thrust of the metal belt CVT by the new formula agree well with the experimental results except for low torque range, $0\;<\;{\lambda}\;<\;0.2$ at speed ration i = 1.0. The new formula can be used in design of the primary and secondary thrusts control system for the metal belt CVT.

In this paper, multi pulse excited-linear predictive coding (MPE-LPC), where the correlation eliminated residual signal is modeled by a few pules, is shown to be effective for the compression of electrocardiogram (ECG) data, and a more efficient scheme for a faithful reconstruction of ECG is proposed. The reconstruction charateristic of QRS's and P.T waves is improved using the adaptive pulse allocation (APA), and the compression ratio (CR) can be changed by controlling the mumber of modeling pulses. The performance of the proposed method was evaluated using 10 normal and 10 abnormal ECG data. The proposed method had a better performance than the variable threshold amplitude zone time epoch coding (AZTEC) algorithm and the scan-along polygonal approximation (SAPA) algorithm with the same CR. With the CR in kthe range of 8:1 to 14:1, we could compress ECG data efficiently.

Wavelet transform is widely used for high compression ratio image compression. It requeires a large memory when it is implemented by a hardware. Therefore, it is efficient to divide the entire image into blocks. Because the wavelet transform for divided blocks causes losses, pixels of the adjacent blocks are used. In the case of color image compression, the image is decomposed into brightness and color components, and then color components are downsampled. When the wavelet transform is performed by using pixels of adjacentblocks, the number of necessary pixels are doubled due to downsampling of color components. In this paper, we propose an efficient block wavelet transform using variablefilter length for brightness and color components. By using the proposed method, the number of pixels of adjacent blocks is optimized. We show the degradation of image quality due to the reduction of filter length for color components is negligible through simulations.
Abrams equation could be effectively applied to predict strength of cement-admixed clay and clay-water content to cement content ratio is a fundamental parameter for governing strength. This paper analyses unconfined compression strength varying with $w_c/C$ and curing time using laboratory test results. An attempt is made to identify strength of composite soil of cement and clay according to variation of Abrams coefficients and curing time. The value B, which was considered to be constant value in past researches, needs to be considered as parameter variable with curing time. From Abrams equation a correlation was formed for unconfined compression strength with mixing conditions by $w_c/C$ and curing time as dependent variable. Regression results in this paper could be used to predict strength of cement-admixed clay at various mixing conditions.
A half open cross section built-up column, namely cold-formed thin-walled steel built-up column with 12-limbsection (CTSBC-12) is put forward. To deeply reveal the mechanical behaviors of CTSBC-12 under axial compression and put forward its calculation formula of axial bearing capacity, based on the previous axial compression experimental research, the finite element analysis (FEA) is conducted on 9 CTSBC-12 specimens, and then the variable parameter analysis is carried out. The results show the FEA is in good agreement with the experimental research, the ultimate bearing capacity error is within 10%. When the slenderness ratio is more than 96.54, the ultimate bearing capacity of CTSBC-12 decreases rapidly, and the failure mode changes from local buckling to global buckling. With the local buckling failure mode unchanged, the ultimate bearing capacity decreases gradually as the ratio of web height to thickness increases. Three methods are used for calculating the ultimate bearing capacity, the direct strength method of AISI S100-2007 gives result of ultimate axial load which is closest to the test and FEA results. But for simplicity and practicality, a simplified axial bearing capacity formula is proposed, which has better calculation accuracy with the slenderness ratio changing from 30 to 100.

Objectives: The aims of this study were to determine the effectiveness of local compression in patients presenting to the emergency room with intraoral bleeding and to identify when complex haemostatic measures may be required. Materials and Methods: Five hundred forty patients who had experienced intraoral haemorrhage were retrospectively reviewed. The outcome variable was the haemostasis method used, i.e., simple (local compression with gauze) or complex (an alternative method after local compression has failed). Predictor variables were sex, age, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) class, hepatic cirrhosis, bleeding disorder, use of antithrombotic agents, and site/cause of haemorrhage. Results: The mean patient age was 48.9±23.9 years, 53.5% were male, 42.8% were ASA class II or higher, and 23.7% were taking antithrombotic agents. Local compression was used most often (68.1%), followed by local haemostatic agents, sutures, systemic tranexamic acid or blood products, and electrocautery. The most common site of bleeding was the gingiva (91.7%), and the most common cause was tooth extraction (45.7%). Risk factors for needing a complex haemostasis method were use of antithrombotic agents (odds ratio 2.047, P=0.009) and minor oral surgery (excluding extraction and implant procedures; odds ratio 6.081, P=0.001). Conclusion: A haemostasis method other than local compression may be needed in patients taking antithrombotic agents or having undergone minor oral surgery.
