In the present study, unsteady flow simulations of a variable geometry nozzle were conducted using a two-dimensional flow solver based on hybrid unstructured meshes. The variable geometry nozzle is used to achieve efficient performances of aircraft engines at various operating conditions. To describe the motion of the variable geometry nozzle, an algebraic method based on the basis decomposition of normal edge vector was used for the deformation of viscous elements. A ball-vertex spring analogy was used for inviscid elements. The aerodynamic data were obtained for a range of nozzle pressure ratios, and the validations were made by comparing the present results with available experimental data. The unsteady nozzle flows were simulated with an oscillating diverging section and a converging-diverging section. It was found that the nozzle performances are influenced by the nozzle exit flow characteristics, mass flow rate, as well as unsteady effects. These unsteady effects are shown to behave differently depending on the frequency of the nozzle motion.

This paper investigates a variable geometry (VG) mixed flow turbine with a novel, purposely designed pivoting nozzle vane ring. The nozzle vane ring was matched to the 3-dimensional aspect of the mixed flow rotor leading edge with lean stacking. It was found that for a nozzle vane ring in a volute, the vane surface pressure is highly affected by the flow in the volute rather than the adjacent vane surface interactions, especially at closer nozzle positions. The performance of the VG mixed flow turbine has been evaluated experimentally in steady and unsteady flow conditions. The VG mixed flow turbine shows higher peak efficiency and swallowing capacity at various vane angle settings compared to an equivalent nozzleless turbine. Comparison with an equivalent straight vane arrangement shows a higher swallowing capacity but similar efficiencies. The VG turbine unsteady performance was found to deviate substantially from the quasi-steady assumption compared to a nozzleless turbine. This is more evident in the higher vane angle settings (smaller nozzle passage), where there are high possibility of choking during a pulse cycle. The presented steady and unsteady results are expected to be beneficial in the design of variable geometry turbochargers, especially the ones with a mixed flow turbine.

Variable air intake and variable exhaust nozzle of hypersonic engines are designed and tested in this study. Dimensions for variable geometry air intake, ram combustor and variable geometry exhaust nozzle are defined based on the requirements of a pre-cooled turbojet engine. Hypersonic Ramjet Engine is designed as a scaled test bed for each component. Actuation forces of moving parts for variable intake and variable nozzle are reduced by balancing the other force in the opposite direction. A demonstrator engine which includes variable intake and variable nozzle is designed and the components are fabricated. Composite material with silicone carbide is applied for high temperature parts under oxidation environment such as leading edge of the variable intake and combustor liner. Internal cooling structure is adopted for both moving and static parts of the variable nozzle. Pressure recovery and mass capture ratio of the variable intake at Mach 5 is obtained by a hypersonic wind tunnel test. Flow characteristics of the variable nozzle are obtained by a low temperature flow test. Wall temperature and heat flux of the nozzle at Mach 3 is obtained by a firing test. As results, the intake and the nozzle are proved to be used at designed pressure and temperature environment.

The flow behind the variable area nozzle which corresponds to the flow at the leading edge of the impeller was measured with a 3-hole yaw probe and calculated with CFD. Two nozzle throat-areas were investigated. One is the smallest and the other is the largest opening for the variable nozzle. Test results agreed with the calculated results qualitatively. The leakage flow through the tip clearance of the nozzle vane significantly affected the flow field downstream of the nozzle vane with the smallest opening. However, the effect on leakage flow on the flow field downstream of the nozzle vane with the largest opening was very weak and the effect of wake is dominant.

In the present study were examined numerically and experimentally the off-design performance characteristics on an axisymmetric plug nozzle with variable throat area. In this nozzle concept, its throat area can be changed by translating the plug into the axial direction. First, a mixed-expansion plug nozzle, in which two expansion parts are arranged both inside and outside, was designed by means of the method of characteristics. Second, the CFD analysis was verified by the cold-flow wind tunnel test. Third, its performance characteristics were evaluated over a wide range of pressure ratio from half to double throat area through the design point, using the CFD code verified by the wind tunnel tests. It was made clear from the study that not so critical thrust efficiency losses were found and the maximum thrust efficiency loss was at most approximately 5 % under off-design conditions without external flow. This result shows that a plug nozzle can give the altitude compensation even under off-design geometry operations. However, shock waves were observed in the inner expansion part under the doubled throat area operation and thus some thermal problems may be caused on the plug surface. Furthermore, collapse of cell structure on the plug surface was observed with external flow (around Mach number 2.0) as it became lower pressure ratio below the design point and the fact may result in big efficiency loss regardless of geometrical configuration.

Variable Geometry System (VGS) is widely applied to the nozzle vane for the radial inflow turbine constituting automotive turbochargers for the purpose of optimizing the power output at each operating condition. In order to improve the performance of radial turbines with VGS, it is necessary to clarify the influences of the setting angle of nozzle vane on the internal flow of radial turbine. However, the experimental measurements are considered to be difficult for the flow in radial turbines because of the small size and the high rotational speed. In the present study, the numerical calculations were carried out for the flow in the radial turbine at three operating conditions by applying the corresponding nozzle vane exit angles, which were set up in the experimental study, as the inlet boundary condition. The numerical results revealed the characteristic flow behaviors at each operating condition.

In pressurized water nuclear reactors, dissimilar metal welds are susceptible to primary water stress corrosion cracking. To access this problem, accurate estimation of welding residual stresses is important. This paper provides general welding residual stress profiles in dissimilar metal nozzle butt welds using finite element analysis. By introducing a simplified shape for dissimilar metal nozzle butt welds, changes in the welding residual stress distribution can be seen using a geometry variable. Based on the results, a welding residual stress profile for dissimilar metal nozzle butt welds is proposed that modifies the existing welding residual stress profile for austenitic pipe butt welds.

The Aft-deck is being applied to the latest unmanned aircraft for the purpose of shielding the gas turbine exhaust plume or spreading jets to increase the mixing rate with the ambient air, thereby reducing the temperature of exhaust gases. In this study, we would like to find out how the performance of the nozzle is affected by the design variables of the Aft-deck. The design variables of aft-deck are selected as length, expansion angle and upper deck shape. The correlation between thrust and plume shielding rate with the length variable is presented. And the correlation between the thrust and the jet diffusion range is presented according to the expansion angle. In addition, the thrust increase effect is confirmed by the removal of the upper deck and the characteristics of transverse velocity vector determined mixing performance with external flow.

A butterfly throttle valve has been used to control the brake power of an SI engine by controlling the mass flow-rate of intake air in the induction system. However, the valve has a serious effect on the volumetric efficiency of the engine due to the pressure resistance in the induction system. In this study, a new intake air controlling valve named "Variable Geometry Throttle Valve(VGTV)" is proposed to minimize the pressure resistance in the intake system of an SI engine. The design concept of VGTV is on the application of a venturi nozzle in the air flow path. Instead of change of the butterfly valve angle in the airflow field, the throat width of the VGTV valve is varied with the operating condition of an SI engine. In this numerical study, CFD(computational fluid dynamics) simulation technique was incorporated to have an aerodynamics performance analysis of the two air flow controlling systems; butterfly valve and VGTV and compared the results to know which system has lower pressure resistance in the air intake system. From the result, it was found that VGTV has lower pressure resistance than the butterfly valve. Especially VGTV is effective on the low and medium load operating condition of an SI engine. The averaged pressure resistance of VGTV is about 49.0% lower than the value of the conventional butterfly throttle valve.

This paper presents the development status of a subscale precooled turbojet engine "S-engine" for the hypersonic cruiser and space place. S-engine employs the precooled-cycle using liquid hydrogen as fuel and coolant. It has $23cm{\times}23cm$ of rectangular cross section, 2.6 m of the overall length and about 100 kg of the target weight employing composite materials for a variable-geometry rectangular air-intake and nozzle. The design thrust and specific impulse at sea-level-static(SLS) are 1.2 kN and 2,000 sec respectively. After the system design and component tests, a prototype engine made of metal was manufactured and provided for the system firing test using gaseous hydrogen in March 2007. The core engine performance could be verified in this test. The second firing test using liquid hydrogen was conducted in October 2007. The engine, fuel supplying system and control system for the next flight test were used in this test. We verified the engine start-up sequence, compressor-turbine matching and performance of system and components. A flight test of S-engine is to be conducted by the Balloon-based Operation Vehicle(BOV) at Taiki town in Hokkaido in October 2008. The vehicle is about 5 m in length, 0.55 m in diameter and 500 kg in weight. The vehicle is dropped from an altitude of 40 km by a high-altitude observation balloon. After 40 second free-fall, the vehicle pulls up and S-engine operates for 60 seconds up to Mach 2. High altitude tests of the engine components corresponding to the BOV flight condition are also conducted.
