A new class of semi-active tuned mass dampers, named as "Ground Hook Tuned Mass Damper" (GHTMD) is introduced. This TMD uses a continuously variable semi-active damper (so called 'Ground-Hook') in order to achieve more reduction in the vibration level. The ground-hook dampers have been used in the auto-industry as a means of reducing the vibration of primary suspension systems in vehicles. This paper investigates the application of this damper as an element of a tuned damper for the vibration reduction of force-excited single degree of freedom (SDOF) models that can be representative of many structural systems. The optimum design parameters of GHTMDs are obtained based on the minimization of the steady-state displacement response of the main mass. The optimum design parameters which are evaluated in terms of non-dimensional values of the GHTMD are obtained for different mass ratios and main mass damping ratios. Using the frequency responses of the resulting systems, performance of the GHTMD is compared to that of equivalent passive TMD, and it is found that GHTMDs are more efficient. A design methodology to obtain the tuning parameters of GHTMD using the relationships developed in this paper is presented.
The effects of the uniform and spatially varying ground motions on the stochastic response of fluid-structure interaction system during an earthquake are investigated by using the displacement based fluid finite elements in this paper. For this purpose, variable-number-nodes two-dimensional fluid finite elements based on the Lagrangian approach is programmed in FORTRAN language and incorporated into a general-purpose computer program SVEM, which is used for stochastic dynamic analysis of solid systems under spatially varying earthquake ground motion. The spatially varying earthquake ground motion model includes wave-passage, incoherence and site-response effects. The effect of the wave-passage is considered by using various wave velocities. The incoherence effect is examined by considering the Harichandran-Vanmarcke and Luco-Wong coherency models. Homogeneous medium and firm soil types are selected for considering the site-response effect where the foundation supports are constructed. A concrete gravity dam is selected for numerical example. The S16E component recorded at Pacoima dam during the San Fernando Earthquake in 1971 is used as a ground motion. Three different analysis cases are considered for spatially varying ground motion. Displacements, stresses and hydrodynamic pressures occurring on the upstream face of the dam are calculated for each case and compare with those of uniform ground motion. It is concluded that spatially varying earthquake ground motions have important effects on the stochastic response of fluid-structure interaction systems.
Various geosynthetics used as liners or the Protection layers are installed in the solid waste landfill. The interface shear strength between geosynthetics installed at the slope of the landfill is a very important variable for the safe design of bottom and cover systems in the solid waste landfill. The interface shear strengths between (1) Geomembrane(GM)/Geotexile(GT) and (2) Geomembrane(GM)/Geosynthetic Clay Liner(GCL) were estimated by a large direct shear test in this study and were evaluated by the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. Especially, this research is focused on the effect of water which exists between geosynthetics because interfaces become easily wet or hydrated by rain, leachate and groundwater beneath liners. The strength reduction at large displacement and the effects of the magnitude of normal stresses and GCL hydration methods also investigated. The test results showed that the interface shear strength and shear behavior varied depending upon the magnitude of normal stresses, water at the interface, and hydration methods. Summary of secant friction angles, which could be used as reference values at a site where similar geosynthetics are installed, together with normal stress and hydration condition are presented.
For offshore structures, dynamic analysis becomes increasingly important as water depth increases and structural configuration becomes more slender. In the case of dynamic analysis of frame structures, much computer time and high cost are required due to many degrees of freedom, In this paper, a new technique of permutating a segment of frame structure to a beam is developed, which is called here Beam Permutation Technique. The technique is based on definition of stiffness matrix of the beam which is obtained by defining the actions(or forces) required to obtain unit translation or rotation for each degree of freedom wiht al other degree of freedom restrained to zero displacement or rotation. In the technique, an assumption is made that relative positions of nodes in the ends of the segment are not variable, The technique can significantly reduce the degrees of freedom of frame structures and thus the computiong time in dynamic analysis. The natural frequencies and static displacements of the permutated beam are obtained and compared to those of ANSYS with a good agreement.
Environmental and operational variables are inevitable concerns by researchers and engineers when implementing the damage detection algorithm in practical projects, because the change of structural behavior could be masked by the conditions in a large extent. Thus, reliable damage detection methods should have a virtue of immunity from environmental and operational variables. In this paper, the pair cointegration method was presented as a novel way to remove the effect of environmental variables. At the beginning, the concept and procedure of this approach were introduced, and then the theoretical formulation and numerical simulations were put forward to illustrate the feasibility. The jump exceeding the control limit in the residual indicates the occurrence of damage, while the direction and magnitude imply the most potential damage location. In addition, the simulation results show that the proposed method has strong ability to resist the noise.
Objective: To compare head and hand movement patterns during squash forehand motions between experts and less-skilled squash players. Method: Four experts and four less-skilled squash players participated in this study. They performed squash forehand swings and a VICON motion analysis system was used to obtain displacement and velocity data of the head and right hand during the movement. Mann-Whitney U-tests were performed to compare head and hand range of motion and peak velocity, and cross-correlation was performed to analyze the head-hand coordination pattern between groups in three movement directions. Results: In terms of head and hand kinematic data, experts had greater head range of motion during down swings than less-skilled squash players. Experts seemed to reach peak hand velocity at impact by reaching peak head velocity followed by hand peak velocity within a given temporal sequence. In terms of head-hand coordination patterns, both groups revealed high positive correlations in the medial-lateral direction, indicating a dominant allocentric coordination pattern. However, experts had uncoupled coordination patterns in the vertical direction and less-skilled squash players had high positive correlations. These results indicate that the head-hand movement pattern likely an important factor squash forehand movement. Conclusion: Analysis of head and hand movement patterns could be a key variable in squash training to reach expert-level performance.
The importance of variable displacement piston pump is recently increasing in industrial applications, as it is widely used for raising the energy level of the fluid in hydraulic system. The regulator is the device that controls the pump output flow depending on the machine load and engine speed, and that regulates the discharge flow of the piston pump by controlling the swivel angel. This work deals with constant power control of a regulator system in bent-axis type piston pump. In order to use engine power effectively, it is important to keep the horsepower from the engine to the pump constant. Therefore, optimum power usage is obtained by accurately following the power hyperbola. First, the governing equations of the regulator are derived, and analysis is performed by numerical simulation in which significant parameters of regulator are identified. Also, we designed and manufactured the prototype of the constant power control regulator for experiments. The experimental results show the responsibility and pressure-flowrate characteristics and these are compared with the theoretical analysis. As the result, it is confirmed that the characteristics of the designed regulator correspond to the numerical simulation.
Extended Kalman Filter(EKF) is used to estimate friction and spring characteristics on the swash plate of a variable displacement pump. In earlier studies, the feasibility of the approach was established using simulation studies to establish limits of accuracy for the EKF approach when it was applied to an ideal situation. In this study, the EKF is applied to an experimental system and the issue of re liability in estimation of certain pump parameters is addressed. In addition, an approach to assign values to accommodate convergence of the EKF is considered. A special experimental system was set up to facilitate the measurement of certain states to enhance the EKF approach. Estimated parameters show ed some scatter about a specified operating point but in general, were reasonably repeatable. The study also showed that changes in the system parameters could be accurately tracked.
The configuration optimization is a structural optimization method which includes the coordinates of a structure as well as the sectional properties in the design variable set. Effective reduction of the weight of discrete structures can be obrained by changing the geometry while satisfying stress, Ei;er bickling, displacement, and frequency constraints, etc. However, the nonlinearity due to the configuration variables may cause the difficulties of the convergence and expensive computational cost. An efficient approximation method for the configuration optimization has been developed to overcome the difficulties. The method approximates the constraint functions based onthe second-order Taylor series expansion with reciprocal design variables. The Hessian matrix is approzimated from the information on previous design points. The developed algotithms are coded and the examples are solved.
