In two-fluid simulations of flow boiling, the modeling of the mean bubble diameter is a key parameter in the closure relations governing the intefacial transfer of mass, momentum, and energy. Monodispersed approach proved to be insufficient to describe the significant variation in bubble size during flow boiling in a heated pipe. A population balance model (PBM) has been employed to address these shortcomings. During nucleate boiling, vapor bubbles of a certain size are formed on the heated wall, detach and migrate into the bulk flow. These bubbles then grow, shrink or disintegrate by evaporation, condensation, breakage and aggregation. In this study, a parametric analysis of the PBM aggregation and breakage models has been performed to investigate their effect on the radial distribution of the mean bubble diameter and vapor volume fraction. The simulation results are compared with the DEBORA experiments (Garnier et al., 2001). In addition, the influence of PBM parameters on the local distribution of individual bubble size groups was also studied. The results have shown that the modeling of aggregation process has the largest influence on the results and is mainly dictated by the collisions due to flow turbulence.
An algorithm for the sodium boiling model has been developed for calculation of the void reactivity feedback as well as the fuel and cladding temperatures in the KALIMER core after onset of sodium boiling. Modeling of sodium boiling in liquid metal reactors using sodium as a coolant is necessary because of phenomenon difference comparing with that observed generally in light water reactor systems. The applied model to the algorithm is the multiple-bubble slug ejection model. It allows a finite number of bubbles in a channel at any time. Voiding is assumed to result from formation of bubbies that (ill the whole cross section of the coolant channel except for the liquid film left on the cladding surface. The vapor pressure, currently, is assumed to be uniform within a bubble The present study is focused on not only demonstration of the vapor bubble behavior predicted by the developed model, but also confirmation of a qualitative acceptance for the model. As a result, the model can represent important phenomena in the sodium boiling, but it is found that further effort is also needed for its completition.
Local two-phase flow parameters of subcooled flow boiling in inclined annulus were measured to investigate the effect of inclination on the internal flow structure. Two-conductivity probe technique was applied to measure local gas phasic parameters, including void fraction, vapor bubble frequency, chord length, vapor bubble velocity and interfacial area concentration. Local liquid velocity was measured by Pilot tube. Experiments were conducted for three angles of inclination; 0$^{\circ}$(vertical), 30$^{\circ}$, 60$^{\circ}$. The system pressure was maintained at atmospheric pressure. The range of average void fraction was up to 10% and the average liquid superficial velocities were less than 1.3 m/sec. The results of experiments showed that the distributions of two-phase How parameters were influenced by the angle of channel inclination. Especially, the void fraction and chord length distributions were strongly affected by the increase of inclination angle, and flow pattern transition to slug flow was observed depending on the How conditions. The profiles of vapor velocity, liquid velocity and interfacial area concentration were found to be affected by the non-symmetric bubble size distribution in inclined channel. Using the measured distributions of local phasic parameters, an analysis for predicting average void fraction was performed based on the drift flux model and flowing volumetric concentration. And it was demonstrated that the average void fraction can be more appropriately presented in terms of flowing volumetric concentration.

An analytical model to calculate rate of vapor generation due to heterogeneous wall nucleation in flashing flow is developed. In the present model, an important parameter of the vapor generation term, i.e. nucleation site density is calculated by integrating its probability distribution function with respect to active cavity radius. The limits of integration are minimum and maximum active cavity radii, and these are formulated using an active cavity model for nucleate boiling. This formulation, therefore. can statistically account for the effect of surface specific thermo-physical and geometric conditions on the vapor generation rate and flashing inception. For verifying the adequacy of the present model, steady state two-fluid and the bubble transport equations are solved with applicable constitutive equations. The applicable region of the bubble transport equation is also extended to churn-turbulent flow regime to predict interfacial area concentration at high void fraction. Predicted results in terms of axial pressure and void fraction profiles along the channels are compared with experimental data of Super Moby Dick and BNL Reasonable agreements have been achieved and this shows the applicability of the present model to flashing flow analysis.

Numerical analysis of bubble motion during nucleate boiling is performed by imposing a constant heat flux condition at the base of a heater which occurs in most of boiling experiments. The temporal and spatial variation of a solid surface temperature associated with the bubble growth and departure is investigated by solving a conjugate problem involving conduction in the solid. The vapor-liquid interface is tracked by a level set method which is modified to include the effects of phase change at the interface, contact angle at the wall and evaporative heat flux in a thin liquid micro-layer. Based on the numerical results, the bubble growth pattern and its interaction with the heating solid are discussed. Also, the effect of heating condition on the bubble growth under a micro-gravity condition is investigated.
Numerous researchers have observed the bubble fromation at SiC/SiO2 interface from 130$0^{\circ}C$ to 1$700^{\circ}C$. According to thermodynamic calculation, the bubble could be formed from the microscopic impurities which result from the chemical vapor deposition of SiC. When C-impurity is present at the interface, it is calculated that the bubble is formed at 1511$^{\circ}C$ and when Si is present, the bubble is formed at 177$0^{\circ}C$. These results are very close to the prior observations, but the calculation can not explain the observation of bubble below 150$0^{\circ}C$.
The one of the most important subject to develop a LPDi engine is to suppress the generation of bubble inside LPG direct injector. For the purpose of this, in this study, the analogy visualization injector to visualize the generation and behavior of bubble, is manufactured and the bubbling phenomenon and behaviors are visualized and studied. The bubble inside the injector is generated at injection hole and after rising by buoyancy, it disappear around the top of a nozzle. The number of bubble generated is little changed regardless of the lapse of time but it is increased remarkably as the temperature around the injector is increased. With injection, the temperature around the injector at which the bubble is generated in_cylinder is much lower than that without injection because the transient pressure drop of fuel by injection.
A numerical method for simulating bubble motion during nucleate boiling is presented. The vapor-liquid interface is captured by a level set method which can easily handle breaking and merging of the interface and can calculate an interfacial curvature more accurately than the VOF method using a step function. The level set method is modified to include the effects of phase change at the interface and contact angle at the wall as well as to achieve mass conservation during the whole calculation procedure. Also, a simplified model to predict the heat flux in a thin liquid microlayer is developed. The method is applied for simulation of a sliding bubble on a vertical surface to further understand the physics of partial boiling. Based on the computed results, the effects of contact angle, wall superheat and phase change on a sliding bubble are quantified.

Experimental investigation has been carried out to examine the operating characteristics of a bubble pump for diffusion absorption refrigerator. The effects of heat input and delivery height on generation rate of refrigerant vapor and circulation rate of solution have been investigated. as a result heat input and delivery height increase, circulation rate of solution increases. And the smaller the tube diameter, the larger the circulation rate of solution. Pumping ratio increases to a critical point and then decrease with the increase of heat input, and it increases with the increase in delivery height. In this paper, Marcus's analytical theory was also examined. It was found that the Marcus\`s analytical theory of a bubble pump was not appropriate for a bubble pump using ammonia aqueous solution as a working fluid.

One of the most important subjects to develop a LPDi engine is to suppress the bubble generated inside the liquid LPG direct injector. For the purpose of this, the analogy visualization injector to visualize the generation and behaviors of bubble is manufactured, and the bubbling phenomenon and behaviors of bubble are visualized and investigated according to the change of the temperature around an injector wall, fuel pressure and a needle configuration. The number of bubbles generated is little changed regardless of the lapse of time but it remarkably increases as the temperature around the injector increases. Also, it was known that as the sac volume in LPDi injector decreases the generation of bubble is more active and the rising velocity of bubble generated is increased.
