  • A control valve with deadband characteristics influences on the control dynamics. A control loop with deadband component shows cyclic control results and causes the wears of mechanical parts. A valve on the important process that require nonstop operation cannot be improved during operation. In case of control loops with deadband dynamics, the optimal control parameters based on the performance only are not sure of the good operation in point of protecting the control component. To improve the control performance and control oscillation, the control parameters should be changed to meet both control qualify and protection of control components.

  • A 23-year-old male patient complained dyspnea on exertion and orthopnea since December 1977. On examination, he was tall and slender. There was grade IV/VI to-and-fro murmur on the left sternal border especially on Erb`s point. The liver was descended 2 fingers breadth below right costal margin. There were no signs of Marfan`s syndrome. Echocardiography demonstrated partial closure of aortic valve and dilated aortic root with enlargement of ascending aorta. Left heart cardiac catheterization revealed moderately elevated pulmonary wedge pressure and right ventricular pressure. The left ventricular end diastolic pressure was markedly elevated to 26 mmHg. On aortography, the aortic regurgitation was severe and it was belonged to angiographically Grade IV. The aortic valve was replaced with Carpentier-Edwards valve without excision and replacement of ascending aorta, under the impression of rheumatic valvular heart disease. After closure of aortotomy, blood pressure was transiently elevated and bleeding from the site of inserting air vent needle of ascending aorta was developed. The bleeding was not controlled by any means. On postmortem microscopic study, the histologic changes were strikingly limited to the ascending aorta from the region of the aortic valve ring.

  • A computer program was developed to predict swirling steady axisymmetric turbulent flows by extending TEACH Code. It was applied to a reciprocating engine cylinder with a intake valve on the flat head. Flows were assumed to be steady and swirling. Effects of Reynolds number, the valve lift, and the swirl ratio on flow patterns and turbulence were investigated numerically. Flow patterns were reasonably predicted in comparison with experimental results. Length of the recirculation zone was shortened with increasing valve lifts and swirl ratios. Static pressure distributions show maximum value near the reattachment point of the incoming circular jet and minimum value near the maximum width of the valve attached recirculation zone.

  • The control valve positioner is a high gain plain proportional controller which measures the valve stem position and compares it to its setpoint which is the primary controller output. The positioner in effect is the cascade slave of the primary controller. In order for a cascade slave to be effecttive, it must be fast enough compared to the speed of its set point change. This paper describes the positioner transfer function and its effect on the entire control loop characteristic based on the simulation results. The result showed that the control valve and positioner determined the gain and phase angle in the high frequency range, while the primary controller and process determined those of the low frequency range. We can also anticipate the combined characteristics in the whole frequency range when each element's frequency response is known.

  • A sunken ship often involves an oil spill. This paper was carried out to minimize environmental and cost damages stemming from oil spil of sunken shipl. Through the analysis of both the standards of the oil tank system and installation, we have identified potential oil spill sites and proposed a remedy of prevention. The result of study, the air pipes of the oil tank are a vulnerable point for oil spill. Also, the remote control devices of emergency shut-off valve have poor accessibility at abandon ship, making it difficult to shut off the emergency shut-off valve. Thus, we propose the addition of a remote quick closing valve in the air pipe and the building of a central control system.

  • A laser-vision-based height measurement system is developed and implemented for the inspection of two-step variable valve lift module assemblies. The proposed laser-vision sensor module is designed based on the principle of laser triangulation. This paper summarizes the work on 3D point cloud data collection and height difference measurements. The configuration of the measurement system and the proposed height measurement algorithm are described and analyzed in detail. Additional measurement experiments on the height differences of valves and lash adjusters of a two-step variable valve lift module were implemented repeatedly to evaluate the accuracy and repeatability of the proposed measurement system. Experimental results show that the proposed laser-vision-based height measurement system achieves high accuracy, repeatability, and stabilization for the inspection of two-step variable valve lift module assemblies.

  • For the experimental measurement of heat flux of DI diesel engine combustion chamber, the instantaneous temperature probes and data acquisition system were developed. By the analysis of measured temperatures at the cylinder head, the temperature at the point 3 which is located between intake and exhaust valve was higher than that of the other points. Temperatures at the point located mear the exhaust valve were higher than those of intake valve. The instantaneous and mean temperature at the cylinder head increases proportionally to the increase of the engine speed, while the temperature swing varies inversely. Temperature swings have influence on the maximum heat flux values from gas into head surface. It has been verified that these probes and data acquisition system perform well by the comparison of the trend of instantaneous temperature variation with that of measured combustion chamber pressure variation with respect to crank angle. It is presumed that these probes could be used in the measurement of other parts of combustion chamber as piston, cylinder wall etc. for the future study.

  • The valve timing and intake system in SI engine is chosen in order to get the maximum performance at the target rpm. This is a compromise and the performance reduction is expected in a certain rpm range. Therefore, to accomplish the possible engine capacity all over the operation ranges, it is required to investigate the effects of intake system and valve timing on engines more thoroughly. In this paper, it was attempted to examine closely the combined effects on the torque and the volumetric efficiency due to the change of valve timing and intake system dimensions. For this, the inlet port pressure was chosen as a primary parameter to represent engine performance characteristics together with surge tank pressure and induction pressure as secondaries. The inlet port pressure was analyzed in connection with both the secondaries and the performance data. Especially the relation between the inlet port pressure and the torque and volumetric efficiency was investigated on the operating conditions. In this experiment, it was acquired that the performances at specific rpm range could be improved by the combinations of valve timing and intake system. Then it was verified that pressure at a intake system contained useful data for the engine performance. By the analysis of inlet port pressure with the others, it was obtained that the properties of the torque and the volumetric efficiency due to the change of valve timing and intake conditions were able to be defined by the average and the maximum inlet port pressures, the pressure near before the intake valve closing(IVC) point as well as the pressure at IVC point during the intake valve opening duration. These results could be applied to almost all over the experimental conditions.

  • Asymmetric cylinders are usually used as an actuator of active suspensions. Since the force is influenced not only by the control but by the road roughness, force control is needed to track the desired force. But the conventional error feedback control treats the valve-cylinder dynamics at its operating point and many use the symmetric model which differ in all respects. We adopt an asymmetric cylinder model and apply a feedback linearization method for the force control to compensate both the valve nonlinearities and the effects of the road roughness.

  • KIST/CARES reliability analysis program was used to calculate failure probabilities of piston pin and poppet valve. The 4-point bending test was performed on Sin/Hip Si3N4 for obtaining material parameters such as m, $\sigma$o, and KB, and the finite element analysis was performed using MSC/NASTRAN for obtaining stress distribution. The calculated failure probability of piston pin was lower than 10-6 and the failure probaility of poppet valve was greater than 0.95.
