  • It is well known that structures constructed by bonding two or more materials and then subjected to temperature change experience thermal stress. This stress results from thermal expansion mismatch of materials. The present paper derives formulas for the stresses in a bimaterial axisymmetric disk which is subjected to a uniform temperature change. First, an approximate solution following strength-of-materials principles is developed. However, the strength-of-materials solution has difficulty in predicting both the peak value of interfacial stresses and its associated distribution. Next, a solution consistent with the theory of elasticity is developed by way of an eigenfunction expansion approach. The eigenfunction analysis is compared with finite element stress analysis results for a specific numerical example. Finite element analysis results show that the interfacial stresses are adequately predicted by eigenfunction solution. Therefore, the method developed in this paper will be useful in determination of the interfacial stress state.

  • One of the recent issues in design of the spot-welded structure such as the automobile body is to develop an economical prediction method of the fatigue design criterion without additional fatigue test. In this paper, as one of basic investigation for developing such methods, fracture mechanical approach was investigated. First, the Model I, Mode II and Mode III, stress intensity factors were analyzed. Second, strain energy density factor (S) synthetically including them was calculated. And finally, in order to decide the systematic fatigue design criterion by using this strain energy density factor, fatigue data of the ΔP-N(sub)f obtained on the various in-plane bending type spot-welded lap joints were systematically re-arranged in the ΔS-N(sub)f relation. And its utility and reliability were verified by the theory of Weibull probability distribution function. The reliability of the proposed fatigue life prediction value at 10(sup)7 cycles by the strain energy density factor was estimated by 85%. Therefore, it is possible to decide the fatigue design criterion of spot-welded lap joint instead of the ΔP-N(sub)f relation.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to determine an optimal number of cycle times for the replacement under the circumstance where the system is replaced at the periodic time and the multiple number of working cycles whichever occurs first and the system is minimally repaired between the replacements if it fails. Methods: The system is replaced at periodic time () or cycle time, whichever occurs first, and is repaired minimally when it fails between successive replacements. To determine the optimal number of cycle times, the expected total cost rate is optimized with respect to the number of cycle times, where the expected total cost rate is defined as the ratio of the expected total cost between replacements to the expected time between replacements. Results: In this paper, we conduct a sensitivity analysis to find the following results. First, when the expected number of failures per unit time increases, the optimal number of cycle times decreases. Second, when the periodic time for replacement becomes longer, the optimal number of cycle times decreases. Third, when the expected value for exponential distribution of the cycle time increases, the optimal number of cycle times increases. Conclusion: A mathematical model is suggested to find the optimal number of cycle times and numerical examples are provided through the sensitivity analysis on the model parameters to see the patterns for changes of the optimal number of cycle times.

  • This research examines the alternative ways of estimating the coefficient of non-diversifiable risk, namely beta coefficient, in Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) introduced by Sharpe (1964) that is an essential element of assessing the value of diverse assets. The non-parametric methods used in this research are the robust Least Trimmed Square (LTS) and Maximum likelihood type of M-estimator (MM-estimator). The Jackknife, the resampling technique, is also employed to validate the results. According to finance literature and common practices, these coecients have often been estimated using Ordinary Least Square (LS) regression method and monthly return data set. The empirical results of this research pointed out that the robust Least Trimmed Square (LTS) and Maximum likelihood type of M-estimator (MM-estimator) performed much better than Ordinary Least Square (LS) in terms of eciency for large-cap stocks trading actively in the United States markets. Interestingly, the empirical results also showed that daily return data would give more accurate estimation than monthly return data in both Ordinary Least Square (LS) and robust Least Trimmed Square (LTS) and Maximum likelihood type of M-estimator (MM-estimator) regressions.

  • For in-depth research of blood flow, it is important to create pulsating flow like the blood flow from heart beat. In this study, we developed a heart mimicking pulsatile pump and evaluated its performances. Main body of pump was produced using a piston pump, and its rpm and duty ratio was modulated by DC motor and encoder. To determine the part dimensions, principle stress theory and simple fluidic pressure analysis were used. The performance of pulsating pump was evaluated by comparing the pressure values and their deviations according to experimental variables. For the results, the output value of pressure followed the distribution of pulsating flow and its deviation was negligible. Through this study, we expect the established pulsating pump can be widely used in study of blood flow produce easy ways to related researchers.

  • The paper describes : ⅰ) Mathematical modeling of poloidal flux to define and calculate the tokamak plasma position based on a property of the plasma boundary which is always a flux surface. Controlling the plasma boundary position is therefore equivalent to equalizing the flux value on several points belonging to a curve tangent to the limiter. ⅱ) Experimental method for determining the outmost poloidal isoflux surface by a linear combination of measurements of magnetic fluxes, fields and field gradients, without requiring knowledge of internal plasma parameters for the feedback control, i.e., with neither corrections for variation in the poloidal beta and the plasma current distribution, nor compensations for the induced currents in the vacuum vessel. ⅲ) Feedback control algorithm for the regulation of plasma boundary position and its electronics hardware based on the PID control theory. ⅳ) Experimental results obtained from the RTP tokamak experiments using the present plasma control system.

  • This study presents the wave forces for spar platforms. The advantage of a spar platform is that it is easy to manufacture and has excellent to motion characteristics. It is important to precisely determine the wave force acting on spar platforms for their basic design of them. We measur the wave exciting force for both the classic spar and truss spar models, and accomplish the numerical calculation using diffraction theory. The results show that experimental values have good agreement with theoretical values. However it is difficult to accurately estimate the value considering the heave plate of truss spar due to the viscosity.

  • A theoretical investigation of the solid-phase mechanochemical synthesis of nano-sized target product on the basis of dilution of the initial powdered reagent mixture by another product of an exchange reaction is presented. On the basis of the proposed 3-mode particle size distribution in mechanically activated mixture, optimal molar ratios of the components in mixture are calculated, providing the occurrence of impact-friction contacts of reagent particles and excluding aggregation of the nanosized particles of the target reaction product. Derivation of kinetic equations for mechanochemical synthesis of nanoscale particles by the final product dilution method in the systems of exchange reactions is submitted. On the basis of obtained equations the necessary times of mechanical activation for complete course of mechanochemical reactions are designed. Kinetics of solid phase mechanosynthesis of nano-TlCl by dilution of initial (2NaCl + $Tl_2SO_4$) mixture with the exchange reaction product (diluent, $zNa_2SO_4$, $z=z^*=11.25$) was studied experimentally. Some peculiar features of the reaction mechanism were found. Parameters of the kinetic curve of nano-TlCl obtained experimentally were compared with those for the model reaction KBr + TlCl + zKCl = (z + 1) KCl + TlBr ($z=z_l^*=13.5$), and for the first time the value of mass transfer coefficient in a mechanochemical reactor with mobile milling balls was evaluated. Dynamics of the size change was followed for nanoparticle reaction product as a function of mechanical activation time.

  • Linear and nonlinear hydrodynamic force, which acts on submerged circular and eilliptic cylinders in oscillations as well as in advancing motion, are investigated as an initial-boundary value problem using a numerical method, which makes use of the source distribution on the body surface and the spectral method for treating the free surface waves. In the numerical code developed here, the boundary condition at the body surface is linearized. Using the numerical code so attained, nonlinear effects for different forward speeds and of the large-amplitude motion are computed. One of the major findings is that, when the forward speed is large, the added mass has its minimum and the damping force change rapidly around the frequency corresponding to the speed-frequency parameter, $\tau$=0.25, Compared to the result of Grue's [10], who used linear theory to get abrupt changes in values of the added mass and the damping force at the frequency corresponding to $\tau$=0.25, the present study, which takes nonlinear effects into account, shows much smoother variations near the frequency.
