  • Clayey soils with swelling and shrinkage characteristics have been major causes for many problems in roads, buildings and other civil engineering infrastructure in various areas of Pakistan, particularly where there are several patches of such soils on either side of Indus River. As the consistency characteristics are directly related with the variation of moisture content; therefore, this study was explicitly focused to investigate the effect of lime and wheat straw on the consistency characteristics of clayey soils with relatively high swelling and shrinkage characteristics. The consistency test results indicate that by the increase in lime content there is a decrease in the plasticity index of soil; for instance, 10% lime content resulted to 59% decrease in the plasticity index value. On the other hand; the addition of wheat straw resulted in a significant increase in the plasticity index; for instance, 10% wheat straw content resulted to a 120% increase in the plasticity index. This study has further shown that the shrinkage and swelling of clayey soils which resulting to several problems in the civil engineering infrastructures may adequately be managed through mixing an appropriate amount of lime and wheat straw as soil stabilizing agent for both immediate and long-term effects.

  • The effects of concentrations (6~9%), heating temperatures (80, 85, 90 and 95$^{\circ}C$) and heating methods (continuous, method A and instantaneous, method B) on the flow properties of cowpea flour (air-dried sediment) at 6$0^{\circ}C$ were studied. The gelatinized cowpea flour dispersions by method B had higher values of yield stress and consistency index but lower value of flow behavior index compared to those values of method A. The log values of consistency index were positively correlated with the concentration and heating temperature for both methods. The rate of increase in the consistency index value by method B at the same concentration was greater in all heating temperatures than that by method A.

  • The purpose of this study was to compared with the properties of commercial polyvinyl siloxane impression materials on the Korean product and the other country one. The materials used in this study were 5 hydrophilic polvinyly siloxane impression materials of light body automixing type (Perfect-F, Handae Chemical, Korea; Examix, GC, Japan; Contrast, VOCO, Germany; Express, 3M, U.S.A; Extrude, Kerr, U.S.A.). Specimens of each impression material were fabricated from a mold with dimensions identical to that specified in ASTM D624-91 and were subjected to tensile lode at 500 mm/min until failure for tear strength. Properties of consistency, strain in compression, recovery from deformation, detail reproduction and linear dimensional change were tested according to the testing methods of the ISO specification no.4823(1992). From this study, the follow ing results were obtained 1. The tear strength values were high ET(3.4kN/m), EP(3.4kN/m), PF(3.0kN/m), CT(3.0kN/m), but the lowest was EM(2.2kN/m)(p<0.05). 2. In the consistency, CT(47 mm) had the highest value, followed by PF(42.1 mm), ET(41.2 mm), and EM(39.6 mm), EP(39.2 mm)(p<0.05). It means more flow that the consistency value is high. 3. The strain in compression values were high followed by EM(5.8%), PF(52%), CT(4.6%), ET(4.1%), EP(2.9%)(p<0.05). 4. In the recovery from deformation, ET(99.95%) and PF(99.90%) had the highest value, followed by EP(99.75%), EM(99.74%) without statistical signification, CT(99.64%) had the lowest value(p<0.05). 5. Detail reproduction reappeared to line $20{\mu}m$ all products. 6. The linear dimensional change was a little shrinked all products. and there were not statistical signification (p>0.05). • This study was conducted to improve the quality of Kongsulgidduk prepared with soyflour and sweeteners. The quality was affected by the type of sweeteners used (sugar, syrup, honey), as well as the amount used (5-20%). Rheological properties showed that when more sugar was added to Kongsulgidduk, the hardness, gumminess and brittleness were lower. In addition, more than 10% sugar led to a significant decrease in hardness, gumminess and brittleness. The addition of honey increased the hardness, but decreased cohesiveness and brittleness of Kongsulgidduk. When color was evaluated, the L-value and a-value decreased, but the b- value increased as sugar was added. The addition of honey resulted in a decreased L-value. Sensory evaluation revealed that the addition of sugar resulted in better overall quality. The color score was highest when 5% sugar was added, while the flavor, moisture and chewiness scores were best when 10% sugar was added. Sweetness and consistency were good when 20% sugar was added. Honey improved the color, flavor and chewiness of Kongsulgidduk; however, sugar produced the best moisture, consistency and overall scores.
