The empirical model for predicting the prior austenite grain size in low-alloy steel weld HAZ was developed through examining the effect of alloying element. The test alloys were made by vacuum induction melting. Grain growth behaviors were observed and analyzed by isothermal grain growth test and subsequent metallography. As a result, it was found that the grain growth might be controlled by grain boundary diffusion and the empirical model for grain growth was presented.
Hydrogen storage as a metal hydride is the most promising alternative because of its relatively large hydrogen storage capacities near room temperature. TiMn2-based C14 Laves phases alloys are one of the promising hydrogen storage materials with easy activation, good hydriding-dehydriding kinetics, high hydrogen storage capacity and relatively low cost. In this work, multi-component, hyper-stoichiometric $Ti_{0.85}Zr_{0.13}(Fe_x-V)_{0.56}Mn_{1.47}Ni_{0.05}$ C14 Laves phase alloys were prepared by a vacuum induction melting for a hydrogen storage tank. Since pure vanadium (V) is quite expensive, the substitution of the V element in these alloys has been tried and some interesting results were achieved by replacing V by commercial ferrovanadium (FeV) raw material. In addition, the melt-spinning process, which was applied to the manufacturing of some of these alloys, could make the plateau slopes much flatter, which resulted in the increase of reversible hydrogen storage capacity. The improvement of sloping properties of melt-spun $Ti_{0.85}Zr_{0.13}(Fe_x-V)_{0.56}Mn_{1.47}Ni_{0.05}$ alloys was mainly attributed to the homogeneity of chemical composition.
For expanding the applications and workability of TiAl alloy, elongation is very important property. Fine microstructure is needed for elongation and physical properties of TiAl alloys. In this study, The effects of cyclic heat treatment process for fine microstructure of Ti-46Al-Nb-W-Cr-Si-C alloy, which was made by VAR (vacuum arc remelting) and VIM(vacuum induction melting) centrifugal casting process, was investigated. Cycle heat treatment process was very effective for recrystallization of this TiAl system, which has microstructure size of $50{\sim}100{\mu}m$ through pre-heat treatment, cyclic heat treatment in ${\alpha}+{\gamma}$ phase region and solution heat treatment respectively. Refined grain size was finally confirmed by photos of optical microscope and scanning electron microscope.
Ni alloy steel is able to use during long time because of good acid and corrosion resistance. So, it's research has focused on developing the alternative alloy which is economically feasible. Recently, consumption of Kovar steel is gradually increased in field of the jet engine and the gas turbine because of its low thermal expansive characteristics. The specimens of Kovar steel(29%Ni-17%Co) contain 0.00%C, 0.03%C, 0.06%C, 0.10%C and 0.20%C, respectively. Ingots are manufactured by VIM(vacuum induction melting furnace) and then specimens are made by automatic hot rolling after heat treatment. Strength of Kovar steel according to carbon contents is estimated by hardness, tensile and impact test. Hardness of the 0.20%C specimen is more improved approximately 14.4% than one of base metal. Its strength increases 32.4% of a base metal, and its impact energy is also enhance 11.5%.
The hydrogenation behavior of $Mg_2Ni$ powder prepared by ball milling has been studied. Ball milled $Mg_2Ni$ was transformed to an amorphous-like state after 200hr ballmilling, and crystallized to $Mg_2NiH_x$ by hydrogenation at got. The hydrogen storage capacity gradually increased as a function of ball milling time. $Mg_2Ni$ by 400hr ballmilling shows higher hydrogen storage capacity (3H/M) than $Mg_2Ni$ by VIM(Vacuum Induction Melting).
Pure $Fe_3$Al alloys with three different compositions of Fe-21.8%Al, Fe-24.1%Al and Fe-27.2%Al were prepared by vacuum induction melting followed by homogenization and hot forging. The long-time oxidation behavior of the prepared alloys was studied at 1073, 1273 and 1473k in air. The oxidation resistance greatly increased with an increase in Al contents. Thin and uniform oxide scales were always formed on Fe-27.2%Al, while thick and fragile oxide scales were formed on Fe-(21.8, 24.1%)Al. Internal oxidation was observed in Fe-(21.8, 24.1%)Al, when oxidized above 1273K. The major oxidation product of all the oxidized alloys was always $\alpha$-$Al_2$$O_3$.
Two types of secondary hardening martensitic steels, 10Co-14Ni and 6Co-5Ni, were produced by vacuum induction melting to investigate the effect of ausforming process on mechanical properties. According to the results of present study, the alloy samples ausformed at low temperature indicated a rather low hardness level in overall aging time despite the refinement of martensite lath width. As the result can closely be related with the presence of primary carbides precipitated within the initial austenite matrix, we confirmed that, in ultrahigh strength secondary hardening martensitic alloy steels, the ausforming process can rather limit the degree of secondary hardening during the subsequent aging treatment.

Graphite crucibles are used for melting uranium and its alloys in VIM furnace. Various coating materials namely Al2O3, ZrO2, MgO etc. are applied on the inner surface of the crucibles using paint brush or thermal spray technique to mitigate U-C interaction. These leads to significant amount of carbon pick-up in uranium. In this study, the attempts are made to develop multilayer coatings comprising of SiC/Y2O3 and Mo/Y2O3 on graphite to study the feasibility of minimizing U-C interaction. The parameters are optimized to prepare SiC coating of about 70㎛ thickness using CVD technique on graphite coupons and subsequently Y2O3 coating of about 250㎛ thickness using plasma spray technique. Molybdenum and Y2O3 layers were deposited using plasma spray technique with 70㎛ and 250㎛ thickness, respectively. Interaction studies of the coated graphite with molten uranium at 1450℃ for 20 min revealed that Y2O3 coating with SiC interlayer provides physical barrier for uranium-graphite interaction, however, this led to the physical separation of coating layer. Y2O3 coating with Mo interlayer provided superior barrier effect showing no degradation and the coatings remained intact after interaction tests. Therefore, the Mo/Y2O3 coating was found to be a promising solution for minimizing carbon pick-up during uranium/uranium alloy melting.
Two groups of oxide dispersion-strengthened reduced-activation ferritic/martensitic steels (A and B) were prepared by adding Y, Ti, and Zr into steels through vacuum induction melting to investigate the inclusions, microstructures, mechanical properties of the alloys. Results showed that particles with Y, Ti, and Zr easily formed. Massive, Zr-rich inclusions were found in B steel. Density of micron inclusions in A steel was 1.42 × 1014 m-3, and density of nanoparticles was 3.61 × 1016 m-3. More and finer MX carbides were found in steel tempered at 650 ℃, and yield strengths (YS) of A and B steel were 714±2 and 664±3.5 MPa. Thermomechanical processing (TMP) retained many dislocations, which improved the mechanical properties. YSs of A and B treated by TMP were 725±3 and 683±4 MPa. The existence of massive Zr-rich inclusions in B steels interrupted the continuity of the matrix and produced microcracks (fracture), which caused a reduction in mechanical properties. The presence of fine prior austenite grain size and inclusions was attributed to the low DBTTs of the A steels; DBTTs of A650 and A700 alloy were -79 and -65 ℃. Tempering temperature reduction and TMP are simple, readily useable methods that can lead to a superior balance of strength and impact toughness in industry applications.
