  • General household vacuum cleaners consist of dust collector, pre filter, motor and exhaust filter, and the filtered clean air is discharged to the atmosphere. By using the CFD methods, we estimated the internal flow in two types of commercial cyclone vacuum cleaners to evaluate the dust collection performance. From the analysis, it was known that the number of revolution had higher values in cyclone cone region. CFD analysis in a specific showed non-uniform velocity distribution at outlet, which results in the deterioration of particle collection performance. In order to improve flow condition, the installation of baffle was proposed and the values of velocity RMS were estimated.

  • In this study, noise radiated from a high-speed fan-motor unit for a cordless vacuum cleaner is reduced by designing splitter blades on the existing impeller. First of all, in order to investigate the flow field through a fan-motor unit, especially impeller, the unsteady incompressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations are numerically solved by using computational fluid dynamic technique. With predicted flow field results as input, the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings (FW-H) integral equation is solved to predict aerodynamic noise radiated from the impeller. The validity of the numerical methods is confirmed by comparing the predicted sound pressure spectrum with the measured one. Further analysis of the predicted flow field shows that the strong vortex is formed between the impeller blades. As the vortex induces the loss of the flow field and acts as an aerodynamic noise source, supplementary splitter blades are designed to the existing impeller to suppress the identified vortex. The length and position of splitter are selected as design factors and the effect of each design factor on aerodynamic noise is numerically analyzed by using the Taguchi method. From this results, the optimum location and length of splitter for minimum radiated noise is determined. The finally selected design shows lower noise than the existing one.

  • The coverage ability is one of essential techniques for the Robotic Vacuum Cleaner (RVC). Most of the RVCs rely on random or regular pattern movement to cover a target space due to the technical difficulties to implement localization and map and constraints of hardwares such as controller and sensors. In this paper, we consider two main issues which are low computational load and using sensors with very limited sensing capabilities. First, in our approach, computing procedures to build map and detect the RVC's position are minimized by simplifying data obtained from sensors. To reduce computational load, it needs simply presenting an environment with objects of various shapes. Another isuue mentioned above is regarded as one of the most important problems in our approach, because we consider that many RVCs use low-cost sensor systems such as an infrared sensor or ultrasonic sensor with limited capabilities in limited range, detection uncertainty, measurement noise, etc. Methods presented in this paper are able to apply to general RVCs equipped with these sensors. By both simulation and real experiment, we evaluate our method and verify that the proposed method guarantees a complete coverage.

  • We have investited on the efficiency of the electric vacuum cleaners for household use. On this experiment, we have used the Expired Gas Analyer IHO6(SAN-EI, K.K) to get energy expenditure of house cleaning. The testing items are, (1) The difference of energy expenditure of cleaning for the each types of the test floors: Which are P-tile, Tatami, and 4 kinds of carpets. (2) The energy expenditure of cleaning for the room with a given quantity of furnitures: The volumes of furnitures are 0, 3, 10, 20% of the room with 2 kinds of chair. The results of the experiments are as follows. 1. The energy expenditure of cleaning for the types of test floors: Setting the energy expenditure on the basis of P-tile, Tatami needs 20~24% energy expenditure than P-tile, and carpet needs 60~64% energy expenditure than P-tile. 2. Cleaning time: The more the room has many furnitures, the more it takes longer. The types of vacuum cleaners, the Shoulder-type cleaner needs 1.19 times of the Upright-type, and the Cylender-type needs 1.08 times of the Upright-type. 3. The energy expenditure of cleaning for a given quantity of furnitures: The more the rooms has many furnitures, the more the energy expenditure increase. A 10% (20%) increases in the volume of the furniture causes a 100% (200%) increases in the energy expenditure of vacuum cleaners.

  • Elemental mercury exposure can result in significant toxicity. Source decontamination and remediation are often required after larger elemental mercury exposures, but the details of these processes are infrequently reported. In the case described herein, a 64-year-old woman and her husband were exposed to elemental mercury in their home after the husband purchased it online for the purpose of recreational barometer calibration. After the mercury reportedly spilled during the calibration process, a vacuum cleaner was used to decontaminate the affected surface; this led to extensive mercury contamination of the home. The couple was relocated from the home while remediation occurred over the course of several weeks. Vacuum cleaning of an elemental mercury spill can lead to extensive volatilization and recirculation of mercury vapor. For smaller mercury spills, careful removal of visible mercury beads by using an eyedropper, cardboard, and masking tape is recommended. Larger spills require professional decontamination and remediation and may necessitate involvement of governmental resources. Vacuum cleaning should not be used as an initial method of decontamination after elemental mercury exposure. Careful attention to source decontamination can reduce the emotional and financial costs associated with extensive remediation after elemental mercury exposure.
