  • The concern about vacuum glass is enhanced as society gets greener and becomes more concerned about energy savings due to the rising cost of oil. The glass edge sealing process needs the high reliability among the main process for the vacuum glass development in order to maintain between the two glass by the vacuum. In this paper, the process of the edge sealing was performed by using the hydrogen mixture gas which is the high density heat source unlike the traditional method glass edge sealing by using the frit as the soldering process. The ambient temperature in the electric furnace was set in the edge sealing to prevents the thermal impact and transformation of the glasses and the temperature distribution uniformity was measured. The parameter of the edge sealing was set through the basic test and the mathematical relation with the area of the glass edge parts according to the parameter was drawn using the multiple regression analysis method.

  • One of the important issues for fabricating the microelectronic display devices such as FED, PDP, and VFD is to obtain a high vacuum level inside the panel. In addition, sustaining the initial high vacuum level permanently is also very important. In the conventional packing technology using a tabulation method, it is not possible to obtain a satisfiable vacuum level for a proper operation. In case of FED, the poor vacuum level results in the increase of operating voltage for electron emission from field emitter tips and an arcing problem, resultantly shortening a life time. Furthermore, the reduction of a sealing process time in the PDP production is very important in respect of commercial product. The most probable method for obtaining the initial high vacuum level inside the space with such a miniature and complex geometry is a vacuum in-line sealing which seals two glass plates within a high vacuum chamber. The critical solution for the vacuum sealing is to develop a frit glass to avoid the bubbling or crack problems during the sealing process at high temperature of about $400^{\circ}C$ under the vacuum environment. In this study, the suitable frit power was developed using a mixture of vitreous and crystalline type frit powders, and a vacuum sealed CNT FED with 2 inch diagonal size was fabricated and successfully operated.

  • There is a big move to build zero-energy buildings in the form of passive houses that reduce energy waste worldwide. Korea has set a goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 37% by 2030 through the activation of green buildings, such as strengthening the energy levels of new buildings and improving the energy efficiency of existing buildings. The use of insulation with high insulation performance is one of the key technologies to realize this, and vacuum insulation is the next generation insulation that blocks the energy flow of the building. In this study, we measured the bonding structure of dry and wet processing glass fiber core materials and compared the insulation performance of vacuum insulation panel. In addition, the insulation performance of vacuum insulation panel was measured according to the thickness of the laminated core. It can be confirmed that the lamination structure of the core and the lamination thickness are important factors for the heat insulating performance of the vacuum insulating panel.

  • Purpose: The vacuum glazing should constantly retain the gap in vacuum state to maintain high thermal performance. To do so, pillars are used to prevent the glazing from clinging to each other by the atmospheric pressure and therefore surface of the vacuum glazing is consistently affected by residual stress. The vacuum glazing could be applied to curtain wall systems at spandrel area to fulfill a rigorous domestic standard on U-value of the external wall. However, this can lead to high glazing temperature increase by heat concentration at a back panel and finally thermal stress breakage. This study experimentally determined weakness of the vacuum glazing systems on the thermal stress breakage and investigated effect of the residual stress. Method: The experiment first built two scale-down mock-up facilities that replicate the spandrel area in curtain wall, and then installed single low-e glass and vacuum glazing respectively. The two mock-up facilities were exposed to outside to induce the thermal stress breakage. Result: The experiment showed that the temperature occurred the thermal stress breakage was $114.4^{\circ}C$ for the single low-e glass and $118.9^{\circ}C$ for the vacuum glazing respectively. The result also showed the vacuum glazing reached the critical point earlier than the single low-e glass, which means that the vacuum glazing has high potential to occur the thermal shock breakage. In addition, the small temperature difference between two glazing indicates that the residual stress scarcely affects breakage of the vacuum glazing.

  • Torque tubes in High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) motor transfer torque from superconducting field winding rotor to the room temperature shaft. It should have minimum heat conduction property for minimizing the load on cryo-refrigerator. Generally, these torque tubes are made with stainless steel material because of high strength, very low outgassing and low thermal contraction properties at cryogenic temperatures and vacuum conditions. With recent developments in composite materials, these torque tubes could be made of composites such as Kevlar and S-Glass, which have the required properties like high strength and low thermal conductivity at cryogenic temperatures, but with a reduced weight. Development and testing of torque tubes made of these composites for HTS motor are taken up at Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Hyderabad in collaboration with Central Institute of Plastics and Engineering Technology (CIPET), Chennai and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur. As these materials are subjected to vacuum, it is important to measure their outgassing rates under vacuum conditions before manufacturing prototype torque tubes. The present study focusses on the outgassing characteristics of Kevlar and S-Glass, using an Outgassing Measurement System (OMS), developed at IIT Kharagpur. The OMS facility works under vacuum environment, in which the test samples are exposed to vacuum conditions over a sufficient period of time. The outgassing measurements for the composite samples were obtained using pressure-rise technique. These studies are useful to quantify the outgassing rate of composite materials under vacuum conditions and to suggest them for manufacturing composite torque tubes used in HTS motors.

  • A mobile lab kart for plasma training is developed with a high vacuum pumping system, vacuum gauges and a glass discharge tube powered by a high voltage transformer connected to a household 60 Hz line. A numerical model is developed by using a commercial multiphysics software package, CFD-ACE+ to analyze the experimental data. Simulations for argon and nitrogen were carried out to provide fundamental discharge characteristics. Variations of the kart configuration were demonstrated: a glass tube with three electric probes, optical emission spectrometer attachment and infra red thermal imaging system to give more detailed analysis of the discharge characteristics.

  • The vacuum-glazing panel is a panel that keeps two glasses completely sealed in a vacuum condition. It is the high function insulation material of having the wall level minimizing the heat loss by the conduction and convection heat transmission coefficient. The edge sealing is a very important process of vacuum glass on the strength, thickness and air tightness. In this study, by using the hydrogen mixture gas torch, two sheets of glass was sealing in the furnace. The thickness and strength of the glass according to the process parameters is measurement and analysis, and predicting the edge sealing strength of glass by using taguchi method of experiment. We verified the validity of the experiment by checking the error rate through additional experiment.

  • We experimentally investigated discharge phenomena inside vacuum interrupter at 1 to 20 Torr to simulate the vacuum leakage. We used glass type of vacuum interrupter where the internal pressure and the type of gasses can be varied according to requirement. The experiment is conducted under ac applied voltage and the experimental circuit is constructed to simulate the actual circuit used in cubical type insulated switchgear. We used two types of gases such as air and SF6. The use of glass type vacuum interrupter allowed us to measure discharges occurring in vacuum interrupter optically. We measured and discussed the discharge occurring in both gases with a current transformer and ICCD camera. We also revealed that electromagnetic wave spectra emitted by the discharge have same frequency range for both gasses.
