  • Periodic outbreaks of Newcastle disease (ND) caused by velogenic viscerotropic ND virus (vvNDV) has become a major concern in Korea nowadays. Throughout last epidemic, the winter season in 2000, most chicken flocks infected early, under 2-4 weeks of age, showed high mortality up to 50-100%. Serum samples collected from 201 breeder, 284 layer and 112 broiler chicken flocks were examined to evaluate the efficacy of various vaccination methods and programs routinely used for mass vaccination in the field poultry farms. Despite repeated live vaccination, most poultry flocks vaccinated by drinking water route using nipple water supply system failed to produce solid active immune response to NDV during the growing time. In the present study, we applied the spray vaccination technique using Ulvavac or Desvac sprayer to the experimental poultry flocks and examined the efficacy of live vaccination effects induced by it under field condition. Measurable antibody to NDV as well as early protection against vvNDV challenge were found in poultry flocks vaccinated by spray route. Further, we did not found significant post vaccination reactions caused by spray vaccination if properly administered. These data indicate that the spray vaccination will be safe and reliable mass vaccination method for the prevention of ND.

  • VV Cep-type long period spectroscopic-eclipsing binary AZ Cas has been observed for five years, 1985 Oct~1990 Feb, UBV at the Ilsan Station of Yonsei University Observatory. A total of 431 observations (U=129, B=142 and V=160) are made for 86 nights. Instrumental differential UBV and B-V light curves made with these observations cover phases nearly a half of one period. There is no appreciable light variation in V but in other two passbands a gradual decrease of the brightness is clearly noticed. The loss of light in B resulted in a reddening in $\Delta(B-V)$ by + 0.06 at phases between 0.4~0.5 as compared with that of at phase ~0.1. This intrinsic reddening arouses a question why at the orbital phase of the transit of a hot star in front of a cool M supergiant the heating of the facing hemisphere of M supergiant by the strong radiation from the B stat is absent. With regard to this unusual situation we propose a hypothesis that a large amount of gas stream of low temperature ejected from the surface of M supergiant component towards the B star dominates the brightness of B star and the reflection effect.

  • Microwave polarimetric backscattering from a wet soil surface had been measured using a Ku-band polarimetric scatterometer at the incidence angles ranging from 10$^{\circ}$ to 70$^{\circ}$ Since the accurate target parameters as well as the radar parameters are necessary for radar scattering modeling, a complete and accurate set of ground truth data were also collected, from which accurate measurements were made of the rms height, correlation length, and dielectric constant. The measured polarimetric backscattering coefficients (vv-, hh-, vh-, hv-polarizations) were compared with theoretical models and empirical models. A new semi-empirical model for microwave polarimetric radar backscattering from bare soil surfaces was developed using polarimetric radar measurements and the knowledge based on the theoretical and numerical solutions. The model was found to yield very good agreement with the backscattering measurements of this study.

  • This paper presents soil moisture retrieval from measured polarimetric backscattering coefficients of a vegetated surface. Based on the analysis of the quite complicate first-order radiative transfer scattering model for vegetated surfaces, a simplified scattering model is proposed for an inversion algorithm. Extraction of the surface-scatter component from the total scattering of a vegetation canopy is addressed using the simplified model, and also using the three-component decomposition technique. The backscattering coefficients are measured with a polarimetric L-band scatterometer during two months. At the same time, the biomasses, leaf moisture contents, and soil moisture contents are also measured. Then the measurement data are used to estimate the model parameters for vv-, hh-, and vh-polarizations. The scattering model for tall-grass-covered surfaces is inverted to retrieve the soil moisture content from the measurements using a genetic algorithm. The retrieved soil moisture contents agree quite well with the in-situ measured soil moisture data.

  • The purpose of this research is to propose an efficient loop line operation plan for customer transportation in a new theme park. Based on the expected customer arrivals, customer loading/unloading methods, and scheduled/non-scheduled departure schemes, movement time between stations etc., we have performed indepth analyses and derived the best optimal policy. Our results show that, over all, the operation with separate loading/unloading doors and scheduled departure is preferred to the other options. We then derived the optimal number of trains and cars meeting minimal customer unsatisfaction with low cost for each season.

  • Overloading of electrical equipment results in excessive currents. As the heat developed in the cables is proportional to square of the current, they get overheated. The insulation on cables is generally made of materials which are damaged easily by excessive temperature. They may therefore lose their insulating properties and lead to short circuits. Since many insulating materials are combustible, they may even catch fire if the temperature rises to their ignition temperature. In this paper, we have simulated the thermal analysis for cable according to the value of current in a overload and a short with the cable of the L's company product(600 V, VV : Four Core) using the electro-thermal finite element method(Flux2D).

  • The spectral-domain methos has been applied to an analysis of a open microstrip line on a dielectrically biaxial anisotropic substrate which takes into account both weak and tight anisotropy effect, which are very important in high-requency applications such as optical modulator, MMIC, etc.. Numerical results of propagation characteristics are validated against the data previously published for special dielectrically weak anisotropic cases(sapphire, Epsilam-10) and New data are calculated for dielectrically tight anisotropic case(LiNb $O_{3}$). Data are for these anisotropic substrates presented to illustrate the effect of three different orientations of the principle dielectric axes. It can be derived from the calculated data in this paper that component of dielectric tensor(.epsilon.$_{vv}$ ) in y-axis which is normal to microstrip-laid plane is important factor in propagation characteristics.

  • In the present article, wave imaging mechanisms were investigated using airborne Pi-SAR (Polarimetric-Interferometric SAR) X-band VV images of ocean waves around the Miyake Island at approximately 180 km south from Tokyo, Japan. Two images of a same scene were produced at approximately 20 min. interval from two directions at right angles. One image shows dominant range travelling waves, but the other image shows a different wave pattern. This difference can be caused by the different image modulations of RCS and velocity bunching. In this study, 18 subimages are extracted, and the directional wave spectra are compared to each other of the two different areas.

  • In this paper we applied Ground-Based Synthetic Aperture Radar(GB-SAR) interferometry to detect artificial displacement of a reflector and performed an atmospheric humidity correction to improve the accuracy. A series of GB-SAR images were obtained using a center frequency of 5.3 GHz with a range resolution of 25 cm and a azimuth resolution of $0.324^{\circ}$, all in full-polarization (HH, VV, VH, HV) modes. A triangular trihedral corner reflector was located 160 m away from the system, and the artificial displacements of 0-40 mm was implemented during the GB-SAR image acquisition. The result showed that the RMS error between the actual and measured displacements, averaged in all polarization data, was 1.22 mm, while the maximum error in case of the 40 mm displacement was 2.72 mm at HH-polarization. After the atmospheric correction with respect to the humidity, the RMS error was reduced to 0.52 mm. We conclude that a GB-SAR system can be used to monitor the possible displacement of artificial/natural scatterers and the stability assessment with sub-millimeter accuracy.
