Analysis with Lifting Fan Position of Hybrid UAM Aerodynamic Characteristics (Lifting Fan의 위치가 복합형 UAM의 공력특성에 미치는 영향)

  • Recently, the development of UAM, which was named by NASA as an alternative to solve the traffic and environmental problems caused by the rapidly progressing urbanization. When designing UAM, the location of lift fans greatly affects the core technology of the eVTOL type, distributed electric propulsion technology and aerodynamic performance of the vehicle. In this paper, a hybrid UAM model was designed using OpenVSP, an open source aircraft configuration modeling program, and aerodynamic analysis was performed according to the lift fans position change by the vortex lattice method. As a result, it is confirmed that the flight parameters and trailing wakes are stable by fixing the lift fan with the state rotated 0° to the flow direction of the aircraft during cruise flight. Also, OpenVSP is a suitable tool to be used in aircraft configuration modeling and design.

Sequential optimization for pressure management in water distribution networks

  • Most distributed water is not used effectively due to water loss occurring in pipe networks. These water losses are caused by leakage, typically due to high water pressure to ensure adequate water supply. High water pressure can cause the pipe to burst or develop leaks over time, particularly in an aging network. In order to reduce the amount of leakage and ensure proper water distribution, it is important to apply pressure management. Pressure management aims to maintain a steady and uniform pressure level throughout the network, which can be achieved through various operational schemes. The schemes include: (1) installing a variable speed pump (VSP), (2) introducing district metered area (DMA), and (3) operating pressure-reducing valves (PRV). Applying these approaches requires consideration of various hydraulic, economic, and environmental aspects. Due to the different functions of these approaches and related components, an all-together optimization of these schemes is a complicated task. In order to reduce the optimization complexity, this study recommends a sequential optimization method. With three network operation schemes considered (i.e., VSP, DMA, and PRV), the method explores all the possible combinations of pressure management paths. Through sequential optimization, the best pressure management path can be determined using a multiple-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) to weigh in factors of cost savings, investment, pressure uniformity, and CO2 emissions. Additionally, the contribution of each scheme to pressure management was also described in the application results.

  • In order to estimate the anisotropy of the medium, we deployed a series of 120-sources in a borehole, and simultaneously recorded 3-component seismic data at 5 locations on the surface. We have tried to estimate the directional velocities by comparing the first arrivals at different receivers. For that purpose, the receiver statics must be corrected prior to pick the first arrivals. However, in an IVSP with a limited number of receiver points, it may not possible to estimate a reliable receiver statics, therefore, instead of using individual first arrival times, we tried to estimate the move-out velocity at each records. From this analysis, we have found that there exists a measurable amount of difference in directional velocities, and confirmed that the velocity anisotropy agrees with the results of the previous studies conducted in this area.

Quality Characteristics of Traditional Soybean Paste (Doenjang) Manufactured with Mixed Beans (혼합콩으로 제조한 전통된장의 품질 특성)

  • The effects of mixed beans on quality characteristics of traditional soybean paste (Doenjang) were investigated. The proximate composition of the soybean paste (Doenjang) met traditional food standard requirements. The range in salinity was 12.30~13.20%, and the salinity decreased with an increase in the amount of mixed beans. A significant difference in pH values occurred in all samples(p<0.05). The Hunter's 'L ($45.06{\pm}0.41$)' and 'b ($13.89{\pm}0.73$)' values of the TDM2 samples were higher than those of other samples. The highest amounts of malic acid of the organic acids are shown. The order of the amino acid content was aspartic acid > leucine > lysine, and that of free amino acid contents were proline > glutamic acid > arginine. The order of mineral content in the soybean pastes was Na > K > Ca > Mg, but levels of Co, Cu, and Zn were not detected. The traditional soybean paste (Doenjang) had an effective DPPH radical scavenging activity and higher phenolic content compared to those of the control sample. Overall acceptability score of the TDM2 (soybean 1 : mixed beans 1) was higher than that of the others. More research is needed to enhance the quality and functionality of traditional soybean paste.

Ethanol inhibits Kv7.2/7.3 channel open probability by reducing the PI(4,5)P2 sensitivity of Kv7.2 subunit

  • Ethanol often causes critical health problems by altering the neuronal activities of the central and peripheral nerve systems. One of the cellular targets of ethanol is the plasma membrane proteins including ion channels and receptors. Recently, we reported that ethanol elevates membrane excitability in sympathetic neurons by inhibiting Kv7.2/7.3 channels in a cell type-specific manner. Even though our studies revealed that the inhibitory effects of ethanol on the Kv7.2/7.3 channel was diminished by the increase of plasma membrane phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PI(4,5)P2), the molecular mechanism of ethanol on Kv7.2/7.3 channel inhibition remains unclear. By investigating the kinetics of Kv7.2/7.3 current in high K+ solution, we found that ethanol inhibited Kv7.2/7.3 channels through a mechanism distinct from that of tetraethylammonium (TEA) which enters into the pore and blocks the gate of the channels. Using a non-stationary noise analysis (NSNA), we demonstrated that the inhibitory effect of ethanol is the result of reduction of open probability (PO) of the Kv7.2/7.3 channel, but not of a single channel current (i) or channel number (N). Finally, ethanol selectively facilitated the kinetics of Kv7.2 current suppression by voltage-sensing phosphatase (VSP)-induced PI(4,5)P2 depletion, while it slowed down Kv7.2 current recovery from the VSP-induced inhibition. Together our results suggest that ethanol regulates neuronal activity through the reduction of open probability and PI(4,5)P2 sensitivity of Kv7.2/7.3 channels.

Flight Range and Time Analysis for Classification of eVTOL PAV (eVTOL PAV 유형별 항속거리 및 항속시간 분석)

  • To overcome ground congestions due to growing number of cars, a lot of companies have proposed personal aerial vehicle (PAV). Among PAV, electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircrafts capable of vertical take-off and landing with electric power are drawing attention, and their configurations vary from multicopters to tilt ducted fans. This study tries to analyze the characteristics of each eVTOL design configurations. Parasite drag was calculated using component build up method for Vahana, Aurora, Volocopter representing each eVTOL PAV type of tilt-wing, compound, and multicopter. Wetted area and induced drag was calculated using OpenVSP and XFLR5 that are aircraft design and aerodynamic analysis software. The batteries used in the eVTOL PAV was assumed as Tesla 2170 batteries and flight ranges were calculated. Also, energy consumption and maximum flight time for the given mission profile including take-off and landing, cruising segments were compared for each eVTOL.

Initial Climb Mission Analysis of a Solar HALE UAV (태양광 고고도 장기체공 무인기의 초기 상승 임무 분석)

  • In this research, how a solar powered HALE (high altitude long endurance) UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) can climb and reach mission altitude, 18km, starting from the ground using only solar energy. A glider type aircraft was assumed as a baseline configuration which has wing area of $35.98m^2$ and aspect ratio of 25. Configuration parameters, lift and drag coefficients were calculated using OpenVSP and XFLR5 that are NASA open source programs, and climb flights were predicted through energy balance between available energy from solar power and energy necessary for a climb flight. Minimum time climb flight was obtained by minimizing flight velocities at each altitude and total time and total energy consumption to reach the mission altitude were predicted for different take off time. Also, aircraft moving distances due to westerly wind and flight speed were calculated.

Simultaneous tomographic inversion of surface and borehole seismic traveltime data in the Pungam basin (풍암분지 시험시추공 주변에서의 지표 및 시추공 초동주시 토모그래피 동시역산)

  • Both surface seismic and far-offset VSP data were recorded alongtwo mutually perpendicular profiles in the Pungam basin. The first-arrival times were simultaneously inverted using the tomography method. For the surface data, seismic energy was generated by a 5-kg sledgehammer at 48 stations and detected by 21 surface geophones at 3 m intervals and one 3-component geophone in test borehole for the purpose of static corrections. For the VSP data, seismic waves generated by the sledgehammer on the ground were detected by a 3-component borehole geophone in a depth range of $9{\sim}99\;m$. Delay times of the hammer data were corrected using the seisgun data before the inversion to yield velocity tomograms. The tomograms indicates that the soil layer with velocities less than 750 m/s averages 1.8 m thick. The velocity varies from 5353 m/s at the depth range of $31{\sim}40\;m$ to 4262 m/s at the depth range of $65{\sim}73\;m$. Compared with core samples, the relatively large variation in velocity may due to lithology changes and fracture effects with depth.

  • Research on urban air mobility (UAM) is being actively conducted as a method of next-generation transportation. eVTOL, an airplane to be used for urban air mobility, is classified into a complex type, a tilt rotor type, a tilt wing type, a tilt duct fan type, and a multicopter type according to the propulsion method. In this study, conceptual design was performed for the next generation eVTOL of the new tilt rotor type in accordance with the existing design requirements. The aerodynamic analysis programs of OpenVSP and XFLR5 were used to perform aerodynamic analysis. The power required for each flight mission stage was calculated, the battery and motor were selected accordingly, and MTOW (Maximum Take-Off Weight) was predicted by estimating the weight of each component.

  • This study utilises repeated numerical tests to understand the effects of variable near-surface conditions on time-lapse seismic surveys. The numerical tests were aimed at reproducing the significant scattering observed in field experiments conducted at the Naylor site in the Otway Basin for the purpose of $CO_2$ sequestration. In particular, the variation of elastic properties of both the top soil and the deeper rugose clay/limestone interface as a function of varying water saturation were investigated. Such tests simulate the measurements conducted in dry and wet seasons and to evaluate the contribution of these seasonal variations to seismic measurements in terms of non-repeatability. Full elastic pre-stack modelling experiments were carried out to quantify these effects and evaluate their individual contributions. The results show that the relatively simple scattering effects of the corrugated near-surface clay/limestone interface can have a profound effect on time-lapse surveys. The experiments also show that the changes in top soil saturation could potentially affect seismic signature even more than the corrugated deeper surface. Overall agreement between numerically predicted and in situ measured normalised root-mean-square (NRMS) differences between repeated (time-lapse) 2D seismic surveys warrant further investigation. Future field studies will include in situ measurements of the elastic properties of the weathered zone through the use of 'micro Vertical Seismic Profiling (VSP)' arrays and very dense refraction surveys. The results of this work may impact on other areas not associated with $CO_2$ sequestration, such as imaging oil production over areas where producing fields suffer from a karstic topography, such as in the Middle East and Australia.
