Low-Complexity Design of Quantizers for Distributed Systems

  • We present a practical design algorithm for quantizers at nodes in distributed systems in which each local measurement is quantized without communication between nodes and transmitted to a fusion node that conducts estimation of the parameter of interest. The benefits of vector quantization (VQ) motivate us to incorporate the VQ strategy into our design and we propose a low-complexity design technique that seeks to assign vector codewords into sets such that each codeword in the sets should be closest to its associated local codeword. In doing so, we introduce new distance metrics to measure the distance between vector codewords and local ones and construct the sets of vector codewords at each node to minimize the average distance, resulting in an efficient and independent encoding of the vector codewords. Through extensive experiments, we show that the proposed algorithm can maintain comparable performance with a substantially reduced design complexity.

  • 계층형 신경망은 패턴 분류를 위해 사용되어 왔다. 이것은 주어진 교사패턴들의 학습으로 원하는 입력-출력 간의 매핑을 할 수 있기 때문이다. 신경망은 타겟ㅌ트 패턴이 입력 패턴의 카테고리에 일치할 때 타겟트 패턴을 학습하므로서 사후 확률을 근사화할 수 있다. 그리고 입력 공간을 부분 공간으로 나누어 학습 데이터들의 비율로서 만든 타겟트 벡터들로 학습한 신경망은 확률밀도 함수를 나타낼 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 역전파 학습법을 이용한 계층형 NN 과 코드북으로서 사후 확률과 확률밀도함수의 측정방법을 제안하였다. VQ 로 추정한 사후확률고 확률밀도함수를 이용하여 학습이 필요없는 RBF network 의 일종인 PNN으로 모음 인식을 수행 하였다. 인식 실험에서 PNN 의 결과는 역전파 학습법을 이용항 3층 신경망과 VQ 의 평균 인식율과 비교되었다. VQ-PNN의 인식율이 다른 것보다 우수하게 나타났다.

  • This paper explores an image segmentation and representation method using Vector Quantization(VQ) on color and texture for content-based image retrieval system. The basic idea is a transformation from the raw pixel data to a small set of image regions which are coherent in color and texture space. These schemes are used for object-based image retrieval. Features for image retrieval are three color features from HSV color model and five texture features from Gray-level co-occurrence matrices. Once the feature extraction scheme is performed in the image, 8-dimensional feature vectors represent each pixel in the image. VQ algorithm is used to cluster each pixel data into groups. A representative feature table based on the dominant groups is obtained and used to retrieve similar images according to object within the image. The proposed method can retrieve similar images even in the case that the objects are translated, scaled, and rotated.

  • Medical imagies with high resolution are coded to be archived and communicated in MPACS. In this paper, we have studied on coding of Cardio-Angiography. Our coding technique is Subband-Vecter Quantization. This techniquec is irreversible coding method. This technique's advantages are removing blocking effect and edge degradation, adapting for drastic image change because of dye injection and fast decoding. We achieved good results fur Cardio-Angiography data, but the study on more sophiscated motion estimation techniques and VQ techniques must be performed.

Quantization of Line Spectrum Pair Frequencies using Lattice Vector Quantizers (격자벡터양자화기를 이용한 음성신호의 LSP 주파수 양자화)

  • Two different low rate speech coders using one of four types of lattice vector quantizers(LVQ's) with fairly low complexity were investigated for an application to mobile communications. More specifically, two-stage vector quantizer-lattic vector quantizer(VQ-LVQ) systems and vector differenctial pulse code modulation(VDPCM)systems with lattice vector quantizers simulated to encode the line spectrum frequencies of various sentences at the rate 22 to 39 bits per 20 msec frame. The simulation results showed that the VDPCM system with the lattice VQ can save up to 10 bits/fram compared to the quantization scheme used in QCELP system. For the VQ-LVQ system, the spherical quasi-uniform LVQ below 36 bits/frame outperformed the other 3 types of LVQ's and the pyramidal quasi-uniform LVQ at 37 bits/frame outperformed the other 3 types of LVQ's with the spectral distortion 0.97.

  • In this paper, we propose a Pyramid VQ(PVQ) to quantize the transform coefficients of TCX module for the music improvement of AMR-WB+ codec. The proposed PVQ is compared to the $RE_8$ Lattice VQ used in the AHR-WB+ standard codec, demonstrating improvement 4% and 5.7%, respectively, in Mean Squared Error(MSE) and 3.3% and 4.7%, respectively, in Perceptual Evaluation of Audio Quality(PEAQ) by 8-dimensional and 16-dimensional Pyramid VQ.

  • 본 논문에서는 가변블록에 대해 DCT와 VQ를 적용함으로써 복원시 영상의 품질을 원하는 수준으로 유지하면서 비트율을 감소시키는 방법을 제안한다. 각 블록에 대해 임계값에 따라 블록의 크기를 세분화 시켜 하위 블록에 대해 DCT와 VQ를 적용한다. 임계값 결정 방법은 원 화소의 최대군과 최소군의 편차를 이용하였다. 제안된 방법은 화소의 변화가 급격한 영상에서는 비트율이 0.34~0.47bpp가 감소하였고, 화소의 변화가 적은 영상에서는 0.74~0.79bpp정도 개선할 수 있다.

  • This paper studied the pattern recognition algorithm and feature parameters for emotion recognition. In this paper, KNN algorithm was used as the pattern matching technique for comparison, and also VQ and GMM were used lot speaker and context independent recognition. The speech parameters used as the feature are pitch, energy, MFCC and their first and second derivatives. Experimental results showed that emotion recognizer using MFCC and their derivatives as a feature showed better performance than that using the Pitch and energy Parameters. For pattern recognition algorithm, GMM based emotion recognizer was superior to KNN and VQ based recognizer

Design of a 4kb/s ACELP Codec Using the Generalized AbS Principle (Generalized AbS 구조를 이용한 4kb/s ACELP 음성 부호화기의 설계)

  • In this paper, we combine a generalized analysis-by-synthesis (AbS) structure and an algebraic excitation scheme to propose a new 4kb/s speech codec. This codec partly uses the structure of G.729. We design a line spectrum pair (LSP) quantizer, an adaptive codebook, and an excitation codebook to fit the 4 kb/s bit rate. The codec has a 25㎳ algorithmic delay, which corresponds to a 20㎳ frame size and a 5㎳ lookahead. At the bit rates below 4kb/s, most CELP speech codecs using the AbS principle have a drawback that results a rapid degradation of speech quality. To overcome this drawback we use the generalized AbS structure which is efficient for the low bit rate speech codec. LP coefficients are converted to LSP and quantized using a predictive 2-stage VQ. A low complexity algebraic codebook which uses shifting method is used for the fixed codebook excitation, and gains of the adaptive codebook and the fixed codebook are quantized using the VQ. To evaluate the performance of the proposed codec A-B preference tests are done with the fixed rate 8kb/s QCELP. As the result of the test, the performance of the codec is similar to that of the fixed rate 8kb/s QCELP.

Fast VQ Codebook Design by Sucessively Bisectioning of Principle Axis (주축의 연속적 분할을 통한 고속 벡터 양자화 코드북 설계)

  • This paper proposes a new codebook generation method, called a PCA-Based VQ, that incorporates the PCA (Principal Component Analysis) technique into VQ (Vector Quantization) codebook design. The PCA technique reduces the data dimensions by transforming input image vectors into the feature vectors. The cluster of feature vectors in the transformed domain is bisectioned into two subclusters by an optimally chosen partitioning hyperplane. We expedite the searching of the optimal partitioning hyperplane that is the most time consuming process by considering that (1) the optimal partitioning hyperplane is perpendicular to the first principal axis of the feature vectors, (2) it is located on the equilibrium point of the left and right cluster's distortions, and (3) the left and right cluster's distortions can be adjusted incrementally. This principal axis bisectioning is successively performed on the cluster whose difference of distortion between before and after bisection is the maximum among the existing clusters until the total distortion of clusters becomes as small as the desired level. Simulation results show that the proposed PCA-based VQ method is promising because its reconstruction performance is as good as that of the SOFM (Self-Organizing Feature Maps) method and its codebook generation is as fast as that of the K-means method.
