  • In the resent years, the importance of VE (value engineering) and LCC (life cycle cost) analysis for apartment building construction projects has been fully recognized. Accordingly theoretical models, guidelines, and supporting software systems were developed for the value engineering and life cycle cost analysis for construction management including large building systems. However, the level of consensus on VE and LCC analysis results is still low due to the lack of reliable data on maintenance. This paper presents time dependent LCC model based value analysis method for rational investment decision making and design alternative selection for construction of apartment building. The proposed method incorporates a time dependent LCC model and a performance evaluation technique by fuzzy logic theory to properly handle the uncertainties associated with statistics data and to analyze the value of alternatives more rationally. The presented time dependent VE and LCC analysis procedure were applied to a real world project, and this case study is discussed in the paper. The model and the procedure presented in this study can greatly contribute to design value engineering alternative selection, the estimation of the life cycle cost, and the allocation of budget for apartment building construction projects.

  • The study on the existing multi-utility tunnel has examined the general aspects related to the installation of multi-utility tunnel rather than the optimal design and feasibility analysis of accommodation facility in multi-utility tunnel. In the basic planning stage related to the introduction of multi-utility tunnel, it is difficult to determine accommodation facility due to lack of relevant indicators and data. In this paper, VE/LCC analysis method is suggested for the optimal alternative decision of accommodation facilities in multi-utility tunnel. The analysis of the items of individual accommodation facility and the value index for LCC costs were applied to the kind alternatives, and the priorities of each kind were analyzed. In addition, the domestic multi-utility tunnel and analysis result are compared. The result of this study will be helpful to shorten the time and convenience of the user in the process of determining accommodation facility including the first designers when introducing multi-utility tunnel.

  • The purpose of this study is to review that the VE techniques can be used as a selection tool of borrow pit locations. The analysis of the soil investigation report is performed for the selection of proposed borrow pit site on a large-scale residential development area. Possible earthwork volume of mining is estimated and the weighting matrix evaluation is applied to the VE techniques. After determining the evaluation items for VE assessment, important degree was calculated. The Rating and evaluation of performance is carried out on a proposed borrow pit site. And, development priority has to be decided for a proposed borrow pit sites. As a result, the relative construction cost is closely related to the haulage distance. As the haulage distance increases, the relative construction cost will be increased. Therefore, it was confirmed quantitatively that haulage distance has a significant impact on the select of borrow pits. Also, it was found that the condition of borrow pits itself is important, but it cannot be ignored the impact of the life cycle cost for the selection of optimal borrow pit sites.

  • In the real-world operational environment, most of text classification systems have the problems of insufficient training documents and no prior knowledge of feature space. In this regard, $Na{\ddot{i}ve$ Bayes is known to be an appropriate algorithm of operational text classification since the classification model can be evolved easily by incrementally updating its pre-learned classification model and feature space. This paper proposes the improving technique of $Na{\ddot{i}ve$ Bayes classifier through feature weighting strategy. The basic idea is that parameter estimation of $Na{\ddot{i}ve$ Bayes considers the degree of feature importance as well as feature distribution. We can develop a more accurate classification model by incorporating feature weights into Naive Bayes learning algorithm, not performing a learning process with a reduced feature set. In addition, we have extended a conventional feature update algorithm for incremental feature weighting in a dynamic operational environment. To evaluate the proposed method, we perform the experiments using the various document collections, and show that the traditional $Na{\ddot{i}ve$ Bayes classifier can be significantly improved by the proposed technique.

  • Muscle force produced by muscle fibers is transmitted to bones via tendinous structures(aponeuroses and tendon), resulting in joint(s) movement. As force-transmitting elements, mechanical behavior of aponeuroses and tendon are closely related with the function of muscle-tendon complex. The purpose of this study was to determine strain characteristics of aponeuroses for in-vivo human soleus muscle during submaximal voluntary contractions using an advanced medical imaging technique, velocity-encoded phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging (VE-PC MRI). VE-PC MRI of the soleus muscle-tendon complex was acquired during submaximal isometric plantarflexion contraction-relaxation cycle (n = 7), using 3.0T Trio MRI scanner(Siemens AG, Malvern, MA). From the VE-PC MRI containing the tissue velocity in superior-inferior direction, twenty regions of interest(20 ROI; 10 on the anterior aponeurosis and 10 on the posterior aponeurosis) were tracked. During the isometric plantarflexion contraction-relaxation cycle, velocity and displacement profiles were different between the anterior and posterior aponeuroses, indicating heterogeneous strain behavior along the length of the leg. The anterior aponeurosis elongated while the posterior aponeurosis shortened during the initial phase of the contraction. Moreover, strain behavior of the posterior aponeurosis was different from that of the Achilles tendon. Possible explanation for the observed variations in strain behavior of aponeuroses was investigated with morphological assessment of the soleus muscle and it was found that the intramuscular tendinous structures significantly vary among subjects. In conclusion, the heterogeneous mechanical behavior of the soleus aponeuroses and the Achilles tendon suggests that the complexity of skeletal muscle-tendon complex should be taken into consideration when modeling the complex for better understanding of its functions.

  • Background: Nano-biotechnology is recognized as offering revolutionary changes in various fields of medicine. Biologically synthesized silver nanoparticles have a wide range of applications. Materials and Methods: Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were biosynthesized with an aqueous extract of Pterocladiella (Pterocladia) capillacea, used as a reducing and stabilizing agent, and characterized using UV-VIS spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infra red (FT-IR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive analysis (EDX). The biosynthesized AgNPs were tested for cytotoxic activity in a human hepatocellular carcinoma ($HepG_2$) cell line cultured in Dulbecco's modified Eagle medium supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum, 1% antibiotic and antimycotic solution and 2 mM glutamine. Bacterial susceptibility to AgNPs was assessed with Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis [Gram+ve] and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli [Gram-ve]. The agar well diffusion technique was adopted to evaluate the bactericidal activity of the biosynthesized AgNPs using Ampicillin and Gentamicin as gram+ve and gram-ve antibacterial standard drugs, respectively. Results: The biosynthesized AgNPs were $11.4{\pm}3.52$ nm in diameter. FT-IR analysis showed that carbonyl groups from the amino acid residues and proteins could assist in formation and stabilization of AgNPs. The AgNPs showed potent cytotoxic activity against the human hepatocellular carcinoma ($HepG_2$) cell line at higher concentrations. The results also showed that the biosynthesized AgNPs inhibited the entire panel of tested bacteria with a marked specificity towards Bacillus subtillus. Conclusions: Cytotoxic activity of the biosynthesized AgNPs may be due to the presence of alkaloids present in the algal extract. Our AgNPs appear more bactericidal against gram-positive bacteria (B. subtillus).

  • This study presents the application of the numerical and analytical technique to simulate the Load Distribution Ratio (LDR) and to define axial stiffness on reinforcing pile foundation ($K_{vr}$) in vertical extension remodeling structure. The main objective of this study was to investigate the LDR between existing piles and reinforcing piles. Therefore, to analyze the LDR, 3D FEM analysis was performed as variable for elastic modulus, pile end-bearing condition, raft contacts, and relative position of reinforcing pile in a group. Also, using the axial stiffness ($K_{ve}$) of existing piles, the axial stiffness of reinforcing pile was defined by 3D approximate computer-based method, YSPR (Yonsei Piled Raft). In addition $K_{vr}$ was defined by reducing the $K_{ve}$considering the degradation of the existing piles.
