This paper examines the influence of the portion of lead investors and investors' status on the investment performance of venture syndication. According to existing literature, multiple investors in VC syndicates can positively impact investment performance by investing both tangible and intangible resources in target companies based on market influence or high visibility. On the other hand, the presence of multiple leaders can cause conflicts in formulating and implementing investment strategy or free-riding problems or increase entry barriers for potential investors, lowering additional investment from existing investors. Therefore, we hypothesize that the relationship between proportion of lead investors and investment performance is inverted-U shape. Moreover, we predict that the status of VCs in the syndication will moderate the relationship between proportion of lead investors and investment performance since high-status actors are less likely to cooperate with or yield power to others. We tested these hypotheses using 24,677 VC syndicated investment data from 1991 to 2005 and found solid supports for the hypotheses. The findings suggest that firms need to consider relationship-based power dynamics among investors within a syndication and design effective role setting and coordination systems.
This paper provides theory and evidence on how venture capital's (VC's) investment influence on new venture (NV) performance. Despite the wealth of research on the relationship between VC's investment and NV's performance, there are conflicts about whether the VC's investment can contribute to the performance of NV and NV's market value or not. For the accurate measure of the investment effect from VC, this research explored how the venture capital's investment in each development stage affects the NV's performance. The research was based on signaling theory and the theory of information asymmetry and looked for which factors affect a NV's performance. Using a sample of 364 firms went to public from 2000 to 2007, we find NV performance increases as NV acquires initial investment of VC in the early stage of development. While NV's potential absorptive capacity moderates the main relationship positively, we find no indication that NV's realized abortive capacity and NV's reputation have significant effect on the main relationship as moderators.
Korean and three other languages (English, Arabic, and Japanese) were compared with regard to the compensatory movements in a VC (Vowel and Consonant) sequence and word. For this, Korean data were collected from an experiment and the other languages' data from literature. All the test words of the languages had the same syllabic contexture, i.e., /CVCV(r)/, where C was an oral stop and intervocalic consonants were either bilabial or alveolar stops. The present study found that (1) Korean is most striking in the durational variations of segments (vowel and the following hetero-syllabic consonant); (2) unlike the three languages that show a constant sum of VC, Korean yields a three-way distinction in the length of VC according the type (lax unaspirated vs. tense unaspirated vs. tense aspirated) of the following stop consonant; (3) a durational constancy is maintained up to the word level in the three languages, but Korean word duration varies as a function of the feature tenseness of the intervocalic consonants; (4) consonant duration is proven to differentiate Korean the most from the other languages. It is suggested that the durational difference between a lax consonant and its tense cognate(s) and the degree of compensation between V and C are determined by the phonology in each language.
The WC/WC grain boundary structure and intergranular segregation in WC-Co and WC-VC-Co cemented carbides were investigated by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy in order to elucidate whether contiguous boundaries were present or not at the atomic level. Some grain boundaries were separated by liquid phase, while others were contiguous at the atomic level. Cobalt was found to be segregated to WC/WC grain boundaries in WC-Co. Cobalt and vanadium were co-segregated to grain boundaries in WC-VC-Co. The segregation width in both materials was about 6 nm. These results suggest that the vanadium present in contiguous boundaries acts as an effective barrier to the migration of boundaries during sintering and annealing. This could explain the grain growth inhibiting mechanism of VC added to WC-Co.

In ATM networks, bandwidth allocation using available bandwidth is important to control ABR traffic efficiently. However, it is difficult to dynamically assign bandwidth on bursty traffic, because the tracking of the existing available bandwidth information uses statistical value. In this paper, we propose a output-bufferd ATM switch using Per-VC queueing scheme with timer and Controller. The controller determines whether each VC is in congestion state or not, and the timer can assign dynamically as determining the available bandwidth for the Present period by Backlogged time and total link capacity, and then transmitting the determined bandwidth to source. Instead of using statistical parameters, the proposed scheme can improve link efficiency as allocating the bandwidth of the next period, by use of measured bandwidth during the current period.

The proposed mechanism has an group management server, which manages the information about both the receivers and the senders. Any receiver can dynamically join/leave the multicast VC. The signaling overload due to group membership changes is not concentrated on the sender, but it is distributed to many receivers for the scalability improvement. The associated signaling messages propagates from the receivers to the ATM switch dedicated to the multicast VC, and hence no signaling overload exists in the shared links there is no latency for the receiver to wait. Our proposed scheme is superior in the view of scalability, the efficiency and the latency to other schemes.
Guaranteed Frame Rate(GFR), recently approved by the ATM Forum, expects to become an important service category to efficiently support TCP/IP traffic in ATM networks. The GFR service not only guarantees a minimum service rate at the frame level, but also supports a fair share of available bandwidth. We proposed new scheduling scheme for the GFR service. Proposed scheme provides priority to VCs and high priority to a VC which have more untagged cells in buffer. High priority VCs have much more serviced than low priority. Proposed scheme can provide MCR(minimum cell rate) guarantee and fair sharing to GFR VCs. Computer simulation results show that proposed scheduling scheme provide a much better performance in TCP goodput and fairness than previous scheme.
Background: Verrucous carcinoma (VC) accounts for 1-10% of cases of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in the oral cavity, and 75% of VC occur in the oral cavity. Only 3% of primary intraosseous squamous cell carcinomas (PIOSCC), which means SCC occurring primarily in the bone, are VC. Verrucous carcinoma arising from odontogenic cysts (OC) is very rare, with only seven cases reported to date. Case presentation: This study reported a case of a patient who underwent partial maxillectomy and neck dissection for VC that occurred in the right anterior maxilla. The patient was admitted to the emergency department at our institution 8 years ago and showed cystic lesions in the anterior maxilla on facial computed tomography (CT) images. Treatment through other departments including assessment of laceration in the mental region and only suture was performed. This report highlights a very rare case of VC in the right anterior maxilla arising from a previous cystic lesion. Conclusions: Since PIOSCC can arise from OC, appropriate treatment of intraosseous cysts and regular radiologic evaluation are necesssary. Surgical exicision of the primary lesion without neck dissection can lead to good prognosis for patients with primary intraosseous verrucous carcinoma.

In this paper, we propose an efficient VP extension algorithm for ABR multipoint-to-point connection in ATM networks. The VC merging or VP merging is used to implement ABR multipoint-to-point connection. We use the VP merging technique. To solve the scarcity problem of VP resources, we propose an efficient VP extension algorithm. Since the proposed scheme follows the standard VPI/VCI format, it doesn’t require another table according to the VP extension. We compare the proposed scheme with VC merging algorithm. The result shows that the proposed method can provide fair bandwidth allocation among the sources in multipoint-to-point connection.

Verrucous carcinoma (VC) is a rare subtype of squamous cell carcinoma that commonly occurs in the oral cavity. However, VC of the facial skin is relatively rare. We report a case of a 91-year-old woman with VC of the facial skin in the left zygoma area. She was diagnosed with actinic keratosis (4×3 cm) of the same site approximately 12 years previously, but declined further treatment. The mass was excised with a minimum of 0.4 cm from gross margins with the result of free from tumor of all margins by frozen section, allowing for primary closure after skin undermining. Basal resection was performed in the preplatysmal plane. The diagnosis of VC was confirmed by histopathological examination. Postoperatively, the wound healed without incident and with no signs of facial nerve injury. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of VC of facial skin arising from actinic keratosis.
