  • A new spray rose cultivar 'Cherry Tea' was bred from a cross between pink spray cultivar 'Pinocchio' and yellow spray cultivar 'Flair' at the National Institute of Horticultural Research Institute. The cross was made in 2003 and 'Cherry Tea' was finally selected in 2008 after evaluating characteristics for three years from 2006 to 2008. 'Cherry Tea', a light orange spray cultivar grows vigorously and has good vase life. The major characteristics of this cultivar are $137stems/m^2/year$ in yield, 68.8 cm in length of cut flower, 5.5 cm in flower diameter, 34.0 in petal number, and 12.4 days in vase life. This cultivar can be propagated by both cutting and grafting. The consumer's preference of this cultivar is relatively higher than that of control cultivar, 'Little Marble'.

  • A new spary chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum) cultivar 'Pinky' was bred from a cross between 'Rima' and 'Yen'. Progenies were investigated from 2004 to 2006 under shading culture in spring and retarding culture in autumn and the promising line was selected based on the performance of year-round production, white rust resistance and vase life. Pinky flowered around 20 October, and year-round production was possible by shading and lighting. Its flower was 3.1 cm in diameter, and had 38.4 petals and 26.8 flowers per stem in autumn. Its petal was narrow (0.4 cm) and pink with green in color at the flower center. Days to flower from short-day start for 'Pinky' was about 47 in spring. 'Pinky' showed a vase life of 20.9 days in autumn. This cultivar was commercially registered in 2007. 'Pinky' would be suitable for culture under the greenhouse and rain shelter condition in Korea.

  • We deposited thin films of organic light-emitting-material $Alq_3$(alumina quinoline) on silicon and slide-glass substrates using thermal evaporation method, and measured spectra of ellipsometry angles ${\Delta}$ and ${\Psi}$ in the photon-energy range of 1.5~5.0 eV using a variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometer. The optical constants, refractive index and extinction coefficient, of $Alq_3$ were determined via the dispersion parameters extracted from the curve-fitting process based on Jellison-Modine dispersion function. The reliability of determined optical constants were verified through the comparison of measured and simulated transmittance curves and the good agreement between simulated absorption-coefficient curves and absorbance spectra measured using a spectrophotometer.

  • X-ray irradiation with convergent chemicals such as nano-silver particles or sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) has been used to control leaf blight on cut lilies. The oriental hybrid lily cultivars Siberia, Le Reve, and Sorbonne were irradiated five times by 200 Gy of X-rays in 2014. In 2015, Siberia and Sorbonne were irradiated three times by 150 Gy of X-rays. After artificial infection with Botrytis elliptica on the leaves and petals of cut lilies, this study used convergent chemical X-ray irradiation of 200 Gy or 150 Gy. Leaf and petal blight was measured in terms of incidence and severity at 8 days after infection using total 552 cuttings. Results indicate that the treatments of X-ray irradiation and NaDCC in 2014 and 2015 slightly decreased the severity of petal blight on Siberia and Sorbonne. However, the results were not significant and severity did not decrease as NaDCC concentration increased. Vase-life was observed separately after X-ray irradiation of 270 cut lilies in 2014 and 108 cut lilies in 2015. Chlorophyll content was not affected by either 200 Gy or 150 Gy of X-rays. The number of days of fully opened flowers at Siberia of 150 Gy and Le Revu of 200 Gy increased by 1-2 days. In addition, the relative fresh weights of the X-rayed flowers were 10% drier than the non-irradiated controls. Overall, leaf blight control by X-ray was inferior to the control by gamma rays, and petal color was bleached in Sorbonne and Le Reve cvs. by 150 Gy of X-rays.

  • A new rose cultivar was bred by crossing the red-yellow standard cultivar 'Konfetti' and pink standard cultivar 'Laser' at the Chungcheongbuk-do Agriculture Research and Extension Services. The cross was completed in 2003, after varietal characteristics was tested for 3 years from 2005 to 2007, 'Suryeo' was finally selected in 2007 and registered on the grant of plant variety rights in 2009. The cultivar was developed for a standard-type cut flower with white-pink petals. 'Suryeo' produced 149 stems/$m^2$ in a year and had 64 petals per flower. This new cultivar needed 48 days to flower and showed 12 days vase life. The length of cut stem was about 78 cm, and the fresh weight of stem was 50 g. This cultivar showed high resistance against powdery mildew.

  • This study was carried out to investigate conveyance environment during shipping export to Japan and the optimum pre-treatment of cut Dendranthema grandiflorum 'Baekma'. Shipping from Korea to Japan, which usually takes three to five days, requires keeping the flower at the ideal temperature. When inspection took place in Japan, the ideal temperature was lost and deterioration began. Once the ideal temperature is lost, deterioration takes place. The results of this work showed that vase life was extended by treatment Chrysal RVB and NaOCl compared to the control (distilled water), and Chrysal RVB was used to maintain the flower from bud to full bloom. Bacterial growth was not observed after pretreatment with NaOCl or $ClO_2$. However, $ClO_2$ pre-treatment was observed to affect the early growth period of the bacteria. The chlorophyll content was the highest after Chrysal RVB or NaOCl pretreatment compared to the other treatments. Therefore, these results support pretreatment with NaOCl and Chrysal RVB of Dendranthema grandiflorum 'Baekma' for export to Japan.

The growth of plant is very vigorous and it is resistant to white rust. The diameter of flower is 6.3cm. Number of flowers per stem and petals per flower are 12 and 31, respectively. Days to flowering under the short day treatment is about 59 and its vase life is 24.1 days in autumn season. 'Snow Bowl' was applied as No. 2009-179 on February 18, 2009 for variety protection and the plant variety protection rights have been registered as No. 3239 on August 3, 2010 at the Korea Seed and Variety Service.
