Alignment capabilities of nematic liquid crustal using a photo-polymer containing chalconyl and cholesteryl moiety (Chalconyl과 Cholesteryl기를 함유한 광폴리머의 테마틱 액정의 배향)

  • A new photo-alignment material, copoly (PM4Ch-ChMA), copoly (poly (4-methacryloyloxy) chalcone-cholesterol methacrylate) was synthesized and the electro-optical (EO) characteristics for the photo-aligned vertical-aligned (VA)-LC display (LCD) were studied. Good voltage-transmittance (V-T) and response time characteristics for the photo-aligned VA-LCD with polarized UV exposure on the copolymer-1 (2%) surfaces for 1 min. were observed. EO performance for the photo-aligned VA-LCD decreased with increasing UV exposure time on a copolymer surface. Also, excellent V-T and response time characteristics for the photo-aligned VA-LCD with UV exposure on copolymer-2 and copolymer-3 surfaces for 3min. can be achieved.

  • For high end, large area displays, all current LC modes require some degree of optical compensation to improve the front of screen viewing experience. Currently most optical films are laminated to the outside of the LCD cell, between the glass and polariser. In this paper we wish to show how it is possible to integrate the compensating optical film within a VA mode LCD cell. The paper will describe the process of making the biaxial film through the process of in-situ photopolymerisation of an aligned film of reactive mesogens in the cholesteric phase using polarised UV light. The film can be made on the colour filter array side of the LCD panel. In addition the process of fabricating a VA mode LCD containing this film will be described and the performance of this module will be presented

  • A new photoalignment material PMI5CA, poly{N-(phenyl)maleimide-co-3-[4-(pentyloxy) cinnamate]propyl-2-hydroxy-1-methacrylate}, was synthesized and the electra-optical (EO) characteristics in the vertical-aligned (VA) liquid crystal display (LCD) photo-aligned on the photopolymer surface were studied. Excellent voltage-transmittance(V-T) characteristics in the VA-LCD photoaligned with polarized UV exposure of oblique direction on the pohotopolymer surfaces for 1 min can be achieved. The transmittance of the VA-LCD photoaligned on the photopolymer surface decreased with increasing UV exposure time. We suggest that the decrease of transmittance in the VA-LCD photoaligned on the photopolymer surface is attributed to the dissociation of the ester linkage in the photodimerized cinnamate structure with increasing UV exposure time

Large TFT LCD Technology for TV application

  • LCD TV market is rapidly growing. It is forecasted that the main size of the LCD TV will be about 20" to 52". The IPS mode is going to lead the large TFT LCD technology for TV application among other LC modes which are VA mode, WVTN mode and so on, because the display image quality of the IPS mode is superior to others.

  • This paper presents an improved vertical alignment nematic liquid crystal mode characterized by the protrusions or slits of the top substrate and additional stripe type common electrodes with polarity switching of the bottom substrate to improve multi-domain vertically aligned (MVA) and patterned vertically aligned (PVA) nematic modes. MVA and PVA modes have disadvantages such as an LC disclination in the vicinity of the middle region of electrodes between the top and bottom protrusions in MVA mode or the top and bottom slits in PVA mode. Therefore, the stripe type common electrode generating a horizontal electric field and the protrusion or slit producing some pretilt of liquid crystals (LCs) were used to improve the LC disclination, which influences the transmittance and response speed. The simulation results showed that the proposed VA mode has higher transmittance than the MVA and PVA modes. As a result, the proposed VA mode can improve the response speed and transmittance remarkably, which makes it useful for upgrading the LCD display quality.

Liquid crystal alignment effect and synthesis of photo-polymer material containing cholesteryl moiety for homeotropic alignment (Cholesteryl 기를 함유한 수직배향용 광폴리머 재료의 합성 및 배향 효과)

  • A new photo-polymer material of the copoly (PM4Ch-ChMA), copoly (poly (4-methacryloyloxy)chalcone-cholesteryl methacrylate) for homeotropic alignment was synthesized and the electro-optical (EO) performance for the photo-aligned vertical-aligned (VA)-LC display (LCD) was studied. Good thermal stabilities of synthesized copolymer were obtained by TGA(Thermogravimetric Analysis) measurement. Good voltage-transmittance (V-T) and response time characteristics for the photo-aligned VA-LCD with polarized UV exposure in oblique direction($\theta$$_{i}$=30$^{\circ}$) on a copolymer-1 (2%) surfaces for 1 min were observed. but, light leakage in the off-state was observed. Therefore, we achieved excellent V-T and response time characteristics for the photo-aligned VA-LCD with UV exposure on a copolymer-3 (30%) surfaces for 3 min.n.

  • Blending effects for generating a pretilt angle in nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with negative dielectric anisotropy on the blended polyimide (PI) of homeotropic and homogeneous alignment surface were studied. Also, we investigated the EO performances for the advanced VA-$\pi$ cell using this homeotropic blended PI surface. A many decrease of tilt angle on the polymer surface to blend homeotropic PI and homogeneous PI with side chain type was measured, and the tilt angle decreased as blended ratio and rubbing strength increase. The blended effects for generating a pretilt angle were clearly observed, and the many decrease of tilt angle can be achieved by using the blended PI surface. The electro-optical (EO) characteristics using the advanced VA-$\pi$ cell using the homeotropic blended PI surface than that of conventional VA cell can be improved. We suggest that the developed advanced VA-$\pi$ cell on a homeotropic blended PI surface is a promising technique for the achievement of a fast response time, and a high contrast ratio.

  • A novel transflective-type LC mode with good display performance has been developed In order to drive both transmissive and reflective modes simultaneously without any modulation of gamma in a single-gap structure, we have introduced a new design concept in the reflective region, where the capacitance is separated into liquid crystal($C_{LC}$} and organic layer($C_{OL}$), playing a key role as a voltage divider in our cap-divided VA-mode. With this cap-divided method having both merits of simplifying process and good legibility, we have achieved good optical characteristics such as high contrast ratio and wide viewing angle in a single-gap homeotropic panel design.

  • We compared various LCD modes for wide viewing angle. These modes can be classified as film-compensation, multi-domain, IPS. So far, IPS and multi-domain VA represent best performance. The performance gap with respect to CRT is diminishing.
