Velvet antler (VA) is a historically traditional medicinal supplement and is well known in Asian countries for its pharmaceutical and health benefits. The objectives for this study were to optimize the hot water extraction (HWE) of VA for the Korean VA industry, and to determine the most effective pretreatment method among microwave (MW), ultrasonication (US), and enzymatic (EZ) techniques. Using response surface methodology, optimum extraction temperatures and times were determined by central composite design configuration based on extraction yield and sialic acid content. Various quality parameters of VA extract including yield, soluble solid, protein, and sialic acid contents were also compared with the conjunction of HWE and pretreatment. The yield and sialic acid content of VA extract were determined to be 40% and 0.73 mg/g, respectively, under an optimum temperature of 100℃ at 24 h of extraction time. The yields from VA extracts pretreated with MW, US, and EZ were 17.42%, 19.73%, and 29.15%, respectively. Among the tested commercial enzymes, pepsin was the most effective proteolytic enzyme and led to the highest yield (47.65%), soluble solids (4.03 °brix), protein (1.12 mg/ml), and sialic acid (3.04 mg/ml) contents from VA extract.
This paper reviews the properties and application methods of widely used types of risk measures, identifies the rationale and business-side effects of hedging, derives the theoretical formula of optimal hedging ratio, and analyzes the various functional aspects of VaR(Value-at-risk) as a risk measure and a hedging tool. Especially this paper focuses on the characteristics of VaR compared with other risk measures in terms of their own principal determinants and identifies its stronger aspects in the dimension of hedging strategy tools. As well, this paper provides the detailed processes deriving the optimal hedge ratios based on the distributional parameters and risk factors. In addition, this paper presents the detailed and substantial processes of estimating the minimum variance hedge ratio and minimum-VaR hedge ratio using the actual data and shows that the minimum variance hedge ratio proves helpful for many cases although it is not appropriate for the non-linear portfolio including the option contracts. We demonstrate the trade-off relationship between the minimum variance hedge strategy and the minimum-VaR hedge strategy in their hedging costs and performances through calculation of the respective VaRs and variances of unhedged and hedged portfolios and the optimal hedge ratio and hedging effectiveness values for the given long position in US Dollar with the short position in Euro.
It is well known that the distributional properties of financial asset returns exhibit fatter-tails and skewer-mean than the assumption of normal distribution. The correct assumption of return distribution might improve the estimated performance of the Value-at-Risk(VaR) models in financial markets. In this paper, we estimate and compare the VaR performance using the RiskMetrics, GARCH and FIGARCH models based on the normal and skewed-Student-t distributions in two daily returns of the Korean Composite Stock Index(KOSPI) and Korean Won-US Dollar(KRW-USD) exchange rate. We also perform the expected shortfall to assess the size of expected loss in terms of the estimation of the empirical failure rate. From the results of empirical VaR analysis, it is found that the presence of long memory in the volatility of sample returns is not an important in estimating an accurate VaR performance. However, it is more important to consider a model with skewed-Student-t distribution innovation in determining better VaR. In short, the appropriate assumption of return distribution provides more accurate VaR models for the portfolio managers and investors.
The SpoU family of proteins catalyzes the methylation of transfer RNAs (tRNAs) and ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs). We characterized a putative tRNA/rRNA methyltransferase, VaSpoU1 of the SpoU family, from Viscum album (mistletoe). VaSpoU1 and other plant SpoU1s exhibit motifs of the SpoU methylase domain that are conserved with bacterial and yeast SpoU methyltransferases. VaSpoU1 transcripts were detected in the leaves and stems of V. album. VaSpoU1-GFP fusion proteins localized to both chloroplasts and mitochondria in Arabidopsis protoplasts. Sequence analysis similarly predicted that the plant SpoU1 proteins would localize to chloroplasts and mitochondria. Interestingly, mitochondrial localization of VaSpoU1 was inhibited by the deletion of a putative N-terminal presequence in Arabidopsis protoplasts. Therefore, VaSpoU1 may be involved in tRNA and/or rRNA methylation in both chloroplasts and mitochondria.
Basel committee suggests using Value-at-Risk (VaR) and expected shortfall (ES) as a measurement for market risk. Various estimation methods of VaR and ES have been studied in the literature. This paper compares semi-parametric methods, such as conditional autoregressive value at risk (CAViaR) and conditional autoregressive expectile (CARE) methods, and a Gaussian quasi-maximum likelihood estimator (QMLE)-based method through back-testing methods. We use unconditional coverage (UC) and conditional coverage (CC) tests for VaR, and a bootstrap test for ES to check the adequacy. A real data analysis is conducted for S&P 500 index and Hyundai Motor Co. stock price index data sets.

Blending effects for generating a pretilt angle in nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with negative dielectric anisotropy on the blended polyimide (PI) of homeotropic and homogeneous alignment surface were studied. Also, we investigated the EO performances for the advanced VA-$\pi$ cell using this homeotropic blended PI surface. A many decrease of tilt angle on the polymer surface to blend homeotropic PI and homogeneous PI with side chain type was measured, and the tilt angle decreased as blended ratio and rubbing strength increase. The blended effects for generating a pretilt angle were clearly observed, and the many decrease of tilt angle can be achieved by using the blended PI surface. The electro-optical (EO) characteristics using the advanced VA-$\pi$ cell using the homeotropic blended PI surface than that of conventional VA cell can be improved. We suggest that the developed advanced VA-$\pi$ cell on a homeotropic blended PI surface is a promising technique for the achievement of a fast response time, and a high contrast ratio.

A many decrease of tilt angle on the polymer surface to blend homeotropic PI and homogeneous PI with side chain type was measured, and the tilt angle decreased as blended ratio and rubbing strength increase. However, a small decrease of tilt angle on the polymer surface to blend homeotropic PI and homogeneous PI with main chain type was measured. The blended effects for generating a pretilt angle were clearly observed, and the many decrease of tilt angle can be achieved by using the blended PI surface. The electro-optical (EO) characteristics using the advanced VA- $\pi$ cell using the homeotropic blended PI surface than that of conventional VA cell can be improved. The Korean very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) network (KVN) and VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA) Array (KaVA) is the first international VLBI array dedicated to high-frequency (23 GHz (K-band) and 43 GHz (Q-band)) observations in East Asia. To evaluate the imagine capability of KaVA, we performed imaging observations of three bright active galactic nuclei (AGNs) known for their complex morphologies: 4C 39.25, 3C 273, and M87 by KaVA at K-/Q-band. Our KaVA images reveal extended outflows with complex substructure such as knots and limb brightening, in agreement with previous observations by other VLBI facilities. Angular resolutions are better than 1.4 and 0.8 milliarcsecond (max) at K-/Q-band, respectively. KaVA achieves a high dynamic range of ~1000, more than three times the value achieved by VERA. We conclude that KaVA is a powerful array with a great potential for the study of AGN outflows, at least comparable to the best existing radio interferometric arrays.
Value at Risk (VaR) is the most popular measure for market risk. In this paper, we consider the VaR estimation of portfolio consisting of a variety of assets based on multivariate copula model known as vine copula. In particular, sparse vine copula which penalizes too many parameters is considered. We show in the simulation study that sparsity indeed improves out-of-sample forecasting of VaR. Empirical analysis on 60 KOSPI stocks during the last 5 years also demonstrates that sparse vine copula outperforms regular copula model.

Objective: This study investigated the effects of vitamin A (VA) supplementation during late-stage pregnancy on longissimus dorsi muscle tissue development, birth traits, and growth performance of postnatal Korean native calves. Methods: In the preliminary experiment, twenty-six pregnant cattle (initial body weight [BW] = 319 kg (standard deviation [SD] = 30.1; 1st parity) were randomly assigned to the control and treatment groups. The treatment group received VA supplementation at 24,000 IU/d from gestational day 225 until delivery. In the main experiment, twelve pregnant cattle (initial BW = 317 kg [SD = 31.3]; 1st parity) were treated with VA supplementation at 24,000 IU/d (gestational days 150 to 225) and at 78,000 IU/d (gestational day 225 until delivery). Serum VA levels were analyzed in pregnant cattle, and the growth performance, gene expression, and serum VA levels were analyzed in the offspring. Results: Serum VA levels in pregnant cattle decreased the late gestation in both experiments (p<0.001). In the main experiment, pregnant cattle at parturition and offspring at birth in the treatment group had higher serum VA levels than those in the control group (p<0.05). In the treatment groups, an increased birth weight was observed in the main experimental group (p = 0.022), and a tendency (p = 0.088) toward an increased birth weight was observed in the preliminary experimental group. However, no differences were observed in the feed intake, average daily gain, gain-to-feed ratio, or BW of 31-day-old calves. Gene expression was analyzed in longissimus dorsi muscles of 31-day-old calves. VA supplementation in pregnant cattle stimulated postnatal muscle development in offspring by elevating myogenic factor 5 (MYF5), MYF6, and myoblast determination levels (p<0.05). Moreover, preadipocyte-related marker genes such as extracellular signal-regulated kinase 2 and krüppel-like factor 2 were higher in the treatment group than in the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: VA supplementation (78,000 IU/d) in late-stage pregnant cattle maintained serum VA levels. In addition, 78,000 IU/d VA supplementation increased the birth weight and expression of genes related to muscle and preadipocyte development in offspring. Overall, 78,000 IU/d VA supplementation in pregnant cattle is beneficial to newborn calves.
