Near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) has become increasingly used as a rapid, accurate method of evaluating some chemical constituents in cereal grains and forages. If samples could be analyzed without drying and grinding, then sample preparation time and costs may be reduced. This study was conducted to develop robust NIRS equations to predict fermentation quality of corn (Zea mays) silage and to select acceptable sample preparation methods for prediction of fermentation products in corn silage by NIRS. Prior to analysis, samples (n = 112) were either oven-dried and ground (OD), frozen in liquid nitrogen and ground (LN) and intact fresh (IF). Samples were scanned from 400 to 2,500 nm with an NIRS 6,500 monochromator. The samples were divided into calibration and validation sets. The spectral data were regressed on a range of dry matter (DM), pH and short chain organic acids using modified multivariate partial least squares (MPLS) analysis that used first and second order derivatives. All chemical analyses were conducted with fresh samples. From these treatments, calibration equations were developed successfully for concentrations of all constituents except butyric acid. Prediction accuracy, represented by standard error of prediction (SEP) and $R^2_{v}$ (variance accounted for in validation set), was slightly better with the LN treatment ($R^2$ 0.75-0.90) than for OD ($R^2$ 0.43-0.81) or IF ($R^2$ 0.62-0.79) treatments. Fermentation characteristics could be successfully predicted by NIRS analysis either with dry or fresh silage. Although statistical results for the OD and IF treatments were the lower than those of LN treatment, intact fresh (IF) treatment may be acceptable when processing is costly or when possible component alterations are expected.
Andropogon gayanus is an important grass due to its high biomass production, drought tolerance and favorable growth on low fertility acidic soils. Currently, there is little research on the impact of growth stage on the nutritional quality or the degree of $CH_4$ production that may arise from this forage during ruminal fermentation. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of regrowth stage of A. gayanus on its chemical composition, in vitro production of gas and CH4, as well as in vitro dry matter (DM) digestibility when grown under tropical Brazilian conditions and conserved as hay or as silage. The nutritional value of A. gayanus grass declined with increasing maturity; however digestible DM yield linearly increased. After 112 d of regrowth, A. gayanus produced higher quality silage (higher lactate and lower pH and butyrate content) and higher DM yield. However, the low levels of crude protein at this time would make protein supplementation a necessity for proper rumen fermentation. No differences in $CH_4$ kinetic parameters were found with advancing maturity or preservation method (hay or silage).

Oleanolic acid (OA) is a naturally occurring triterpenoid in food materials and is a component of the leaves and roots of Olea europaea, Viscum album L., Aralia chinensis L. and more than 120 other plant species. There are several reports validating its antitumor activity against different cancer cells apart from its hepatoprotective activity. However, antitumor activity against skin cancer has not beed studied well thus far. Hence the present study of effects of OA against HaCaT (immortalized keratinocyte) cells - a cell-based epithelial model system for toxicity/ethnopharmacology-based studies - was conducted. Radical scavenging activity ($DPPH{\cdot}$) and FRAP were determined spectrophotometrically. Proliferation was assessed by XTT assay at 24, 48 and 72 hrs with exposure to various concentrations (12.5-200 ${\mu}M$) of OA. Apoptotic induction potential of OA was demonstrated using a cellular DNA fragmentation ELISA method. Morphological studies were also carried out to elucidate its antitumor potential. The results revealed that OA induces apoptosis by altering cellular morphology as well as DNA integrity in HaCaT cells in a dose-dependent manner, with comparatively low cytotoxicity. The moderate toxicity observed in HaCaT cells, with induction of apoptosis, possibly suggests greater involvement of programmed-cell death-mediated mechanisms. We conclude that OA has relatively low toxicity and has the potential to induce apoptosis in HaCaT cells and hence provides a substantial and sound scientific basis for further validation studies.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of salivary gland on the calcification of dentin in rats. 80 Sprague-Dawley male rats that weighed approximately 120gm were used in this study. 5 rats among them were shared as controls. 75 rats received sialoadenectomy were divided into submaxillary adenectomy group, parotidectomy group, and submaxillary-parotid gland combined removal group. In experimental groups, 25 rats in each of the 3 groups were sacrificed at the following intervals; 3 days, 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks. All animals were sacrificed by vascular perfusion with 10% formalin. The maxillary incisors including periapical tissues were removed and defatted in 20% KOH solution at $0^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours, and dehydrated with acetone. Each tooth specimen was attached on the stab for scanning electron microscopic study. Gold was coated on the each specimen in the thickness of 300${\AA}$ at D.C. 1400V, 6mA for 6 minutes with coating machine (Eiko IB-3). Inner dentinal surfaces of the specimens were observed with SEM (Hitachi S-450). The results were as follows, 1. Parotidectomy groups were found to be inhibited the formation of dentinal calcification compared to submaxillary adenectomy groups in the eady stages. 2. Combined removal of submaxillary and parotid gland was appeared to cause more severe inhibition effect on the dentinal calcification than that of each salivary gland separately. 3. Inhibition of the calcification and mineralization of dentin caused by sialoadenectomy was more extreme from 3 day to 2 weeks after beginning of the experiments. However it was tended to be normalized after that. 4. Salivary gland was responsible for alterations in calcification and mineralization of dentinal growth.
The bioleaching of heavy metals from fly ash was performed by Thiobacillus thiooxidans MET isolated from the enrichment culture of an anaerobically digested sludge. The effect of solid concentrations on the efficiency of metal leaching was studied in shaken flasks. In the range of solid concentrations 20 g.L$^1$to 100 g.L$^1$T. thiooxidans MET oxidized S$^{0}$ to sulfate without any lag period. The final pH of slurry solution was decreased to below pH 1, and the final oxide-redox potential (ORP) was increased to over 420 mV in the solid concentrations below 100 g.L$^1$. However, the initial lag period of 4 to 8 days was required to obtain the pH reduction and ORP increase of the slurry solutions in the range of solid concentrations 150 g.L$^1$to 300 g.L$^1$. The sulfur oxidation rate of T. thiooxidans MET in 20~100 g.L$^1$solid concentrations was 0.70~0.75 g-S.L$^1$ㆍ d$^1$, but its sulfur oxidation activity was remarkably inhibited with increasing solid concentration over 150 g.L$^1$. Increasing fly ash solids concentration in the range of solids concentration 20 g.L$^1$ to 200 g.L$^1$decreased the removal efficiency of Zn, Cu, Mn, Cr and Pb. The solubilization of heavy metals from fly ash was strongly correlated with the pH value of slurry solution. When the pH of slurry solution was reduced to 3, the solubilization process of Zn, Cu and Mn started, and their solubilization efficiency of Zn, Cu and Mn was progressively increased below pH 2. However, the solubilization process of Cr and Pb started at pH 2.5 and 2.0, respectively.
New results of dependence of magnetic field, trapped by a stack of HTS tapes, on amount of tapes in a stack are reported. Commercial GdBCO tape 12 mm width and without Cu layer was used for the research. Tape was divided in square pieces $12{\times}12mm^2$ from which stacks were formed. Filling factor of the tape was about 1.4%. Measurements were carried out for stacks with height from 5 to 250 pieces and at wide temperature range from liquid helium to liquid nitrogen. Both FC (field cooling) and ZFC (zero field cooling) cooling methods were used in the research. These two methods show matching results with good accuracy. As a result dependences of trapped magnetic flux on amount of tapes for different temperatures were received. Research shows, that with increasing height of the stack trapped magnetic field value reach saturation at about 60 tapes in a stack for low temperatures. From 60 to 100 tapes increase of magnet flux is only 5%. Thus increase amount of tapes in a stack is not profitable. Also investigation of trapped magnet field relaxation was carried out. Relaxation speed decreases with increasing amount of elements. It means that the higher the stack is, the longer trapped flux will be held in cause of the same temperature.
Recent observations by Hinode show weakly-attenuated coronal loop oscillations in the presence of background flow (Ofman & Wang 2008, A&A, 482, L9). We study the vertical kink oscillations in solar coronal loops, considering field aligned flows inside the loops as well as surrounding the loops environment. The two dimensional numerical model of straight slab is used to explore the excitation and attenuation of the impulsively triggered fast magnetosonic standing kink waves. A full set of time dependent ideal magnetohydrodynamics equations is solved numerically taking into account the value of flow of the order of observed flows detected by SOT/Hinode. We find that relaxing the assumption of the limited flows within the loops enhances the damping rate of the fundamental mode of the standing kink waves by 2 - 3 % as compared to flow pattern which is basically localized within the loops. We further notice that extending the flow pattern beyond the loop thickness also enhances the strength of the shock associated with slow magnetoacoustic waves, recognized as an addition feature detected in the numerical simulation. The wider out-flow pattern destroys the oscillation patterns early as compared to narrower flow pattern, in other words we can say that it affects the durability of the oscillation. However, for the typical coronal loops parameters we find that the observed durability periods of the SOT/Hinode observation can be achieved with an out-flow Gaussian patterns for which half-width is not greater than factor 2.0 of the loop-half-width. explain a possible relation between electric current structure and sigmoid observed in a preflare phase.
Piezoelectric properties of $(Pb_{1-x}Y_x)[(Ni_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})_{0.15}(Zr_{1/2}Ti_{1/2)})_{0.85}]O_{3}$ (x=0~0.05) ceramics were investigated, The stoichiometric PNN-PZT ceramics required the sintering temperature above $1100^{\circ}C$, but the addition of $Y_{2}O_{3}$ in the PNN-PZT ceramic lowered the sintering temperature down to $1000^{\circ}C$. In case of x=0.005, the electro-mechanical coupling $factor(K_p)$, the piezoelectric $constant(d_{33})$, and the maximum strain ratio of PNN-PZT ceramics sintered at $1000^{\circ}C$ were 53.1%, 395pC/N, and $2200{\times}10^{-6}$ respectively, A 30-layer piezoelectric actuator$(10{\times}10{\times}1.7mm)$ fabricated with the above material showed the maximum strain of $2.09{\mu}m$ under 100V DC bias.
Double layered BaTiO3 thin films with high dielectric constant as well as good insulating property were prepared for the application to low voltage driving thin film electroluminescent (TFEL) device. BaTiO3 thin films were formed by rf-magnetron sputtering technique. Amorphous and polycrystalline BaTiO3 thin films were deposited at the substrate temperatures of room temperature and 55$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. Two kinds of films prepared under these conditions showed high resistivity and high dielectric constant. The figure of merit (=$\varepsilon$r$\times$Eb.d) of polycrystalline BaTiO3 thin film was very high (8.43$\mu$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$). The polycrystalline BaTiO3 showed a substantial amount of leakage current (I), under the high electric field above 0.5 MV/cm. The double layered BaTiO3 thin film, i.e., amorphous BaTiO3 layer coated polycrystalline BaTiO3 thin film, was prepared by the new stacking method and showed very good dielectric and insulating properties. It showed a high dielectric constant fo 95 and leakage current density of 25 nA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ (0.3MV/cm) with the figure of merit of 20$\mu$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The leakage current density in the double layered BaTiO3 was much smaller than that in polycrystalline BaTiO3 under the high electric field. The saturated brightness of the devices using double layered BaTiO3 was about 220cd/$m^2$. Threshold voltage of TFEL devices fabricated on double layered BaTiO3 decreased by 50V compared to the EL devices fabricated on amorphous BaTiO3.

Botryosphaeran, a water-soluble exopolysaccharide of the ${\beta}-(1{\rightarrow}3;1{\rightarrow}6)$-D-glucan type that has been isolated from the culture medium of Botryosphaeria rhodina MAMB-05 grown in submerged fermentation using glucose as the sole carbon source, was previously demonstrated to be non-genotoxic in peripheral blood and bone marrow, and exhibited strong anticlastogenic activity. In the present study, the effects of botryosphaeran were investigated in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats as well as in high-fat diet-fed hyperlipidemic Wistar rats. The plasma glucose level was reduced by 52% in the diabetic group of rats after administration of 12 mg botryosphaeran/kg body weight of the rats (b.w.)/day by gavage over 15 days. A reduction in the median ration intake was accompanied by an increase in the median body weight gain, as well as the efficiency of food conversion. These results demonstrate that botryosphaeran has protective effects by reducing the symptoms of cachexia in Diabetes mellitus. Botryosphaeran administered by gavage at a concentration of 12 mg botryosphaeran/kg b.w./day over 15 days also reduced the plasma levels of total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein-cholesterol by 18% and 27%, respectively, in hyperlipidemic rats. Based on these findings, we conclude that botryosphaeran possesses hypoglycemic and hypocholesterolemic properties in conditions of diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia, respectively, and may be used as an oral anti-diabetic agent.
