  • A energy efficient $V_{pp}$ generator using a variable pumping frequency for mobile DRAM is presented in this paper. The proposed $V_{pp}$ generator exploits 3 stages of a cross-coupled charge pump for energy efficiency. Instead of using a fixed pumping frequency in the conventional $V_{pp}$ generator, our proposed $V_{pp}$ generator adopts a voltage-controlled oscillator and uses variable frequencies to reduce the ramp-up time. As a result, our $V_{pp}$ generator generates 3.0 V output voltage with 24.0-${\mu}s$ ramp-up time at 2 mA current load and 1 nF capacitor load with 1.2 V supply voltage. Experimental results show that the proposed $V_{pp}$ generator consumes around 26% less energy (1573 nJ $\rightarrow$ 1162 nJ) and reduces 29% less ramp-up time (33.7-${\mu}s$ $\rightarrow$ 24.0-${\mu}s$) compared to the conventional approach.

  • To study ecological properties of Vibrio cholerae non-Ol and Vibrio mimicus which have been described as new food poisoning bacteria recently, the influence of factors such as temperature, salinity, pH and chemical oxygen demand (COD) on detection rate and density of these bacteria were evaluated. Fifty four seawater samples and 49 bottom deposit samples from estuary of Kum river from March 26th, 1993 to February 22nd, 1994 were used for this study. The detection rate of V cholerae non-O1 were $16.7\%$ for seawater and $10.2\%$ for bottom deposit, respertively. The total detertion rate of V. cholerae non-O1 $(11.7\%)$ was a little higher than V mimicus $(10.7\%)$. Both V choierae non-O1 and V. mimicus were mainly detected in estuary water of which showed temperature $24^{\circ}C$ above and salinity $10\%o$ below. These bacteria were also detected in bottom deposit on January when the water temperature was $3.5^{\circ}C$. From these results, we supposed that temperature, salinity and organic material were important factors to growth of V. cholerae non-O1 and V. mimicus. V cholerae non-O1 might be grown better than V. mimicus under the fluctuating aquatic environmental condition such as salinity.

  • Recently, due to the liquefaction caused by earthquakes in Pohang and surrounding areas, the importance of researches on the liquefaction assessment has increased. The possibility of liquefaction can be assessed using the geotechnical information. The cyclic resistance ratio (CRR) value used in the assessment of liquefaction can be determined by using the SPT-N values or shear wave velocity, Vs value. A study was conducted to compare the accuracy of the liquefaction assessment using these two types of geotechnical information, and concluded that the results using SPT-N values are more accurate than those using Vs values. The previous study speculated that the used Vs value was measured at a depth of 12 m uniformly without considering the critical depth of liquefaction. Therefore, 10 empirical equations that convert SPT-N values measured at critical depth of liquefaction into Vs values to confirm the validity of geotechnical information measured at 12 m points uniformly are used to assess the liquefaction possibility and the results were compared with the actual liquefaction results to confirm the accuracy. As a result, 7 out of 10 cases considering critical depth for liquefaction show higher accuracy than those not considered.

  • The 16S rDNA - RFLP types for six Vibrio species (V. fluvialis, V. proteolyticus, V. vulnificus, V. mimicus) including two core group members, V. alginolyticus and V. parahaemolyticu s, and Grimontia (Vibrio) hollisae were determined using PCR-RFLP analysis. Six tetrameric restriction enzymes (Alu I, Cfo I, Dde I, Hae III, Msp I, and Rsa I) were selected for RFLP analysis. V. alginolyticus, V. parahaemolyticus, and V. proteolyticus showed the same RFLP pattern following digestion with four of the six used restriction enzymes: CfoI, DdeI, MspI, and RsaI. Various restriction enzyme combinations generated digests recognizable as distinct RFLP types for each of the assayed Vibrio species. In particular, AluI single digestion produced species specific band patterns that enabled the differentiation between these Vibrio species. Dendrogram based on restriction patterns showed that two Vibrio core group members, V. alginolyticus and V. parahaemolyticus were closely related having a similarity over 90%. Although the observed RFLP pattern for Grimontia hollisae shared several common bands with other Vibrio spp., G. hollisae results were still clearly distinct from Vibrio spp. RFLP types for all restriction enzymes tested. If restriction enzymes are aptly selected, PCR-RFLP analysis is still a rapid and effective tool for differentiating Vibrio species.

  • Pure and V-doped NiO porous structures were prepared by the evaporation-induced surfactant assembly and subsequent pyrolysis of assembled structures, and their gas sensing characteristics were investigated. Pure NiO porous structures showed negligible gas responses (S=$R_g/R_a$, $R_g$: sensor resistance in analytic gas; $R_a$: sensor resistance in air) to 5 ppm trimethylamine (S=1.17) as well as other interfering gases such as ethanol, p-xylene, toluene, benzene and formaldehyde (S=1.02-1.13). In contrast, the V-doped NiO porous structures exhibited a high response and selectivity to 5 ppm trimethylamine (S=14.5) with low cross-responses to other interfering gases (S=4.0-8.7) at $350^{\circ}C$. The high gas response of V-doped NiO porous structures to trimethylamine was explained by electronic sensitization, that is, the increase in the chemoresistive variation due to the decrease in the hole concentration. The enhanced selectivity to trimethylamine was discussed in relation to the interaction between basic trimethylamine gas and acidic V catalysts.

  • Molecular co-suppression phenomena are important to consider in transgene experiments. Embryogenic cells were obtained from immature cotyledons and engineered with two different gene constructs (pHV and pHVS) through particle bombardment. Both constructs contain a gene conferring resistance to hygromycin (hpt) as a selective marker and a modified glycinin (11S globulin) gene (V3-1) as a target. sGFP(S65T) as a reporter gene was, however, inserted into the flanking region of the V3-1 gene (pHVS). Fluorescence microscopic screening after the selection of hygromycin, identified clearly the expression of sGFP(S65T) in the transformed soybean embryos bombarded with the pHVS construct. Stable integration of the transgenes was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Southern blot analysis. Seeds of transgenic plants obtained from the pHV construct frequently lacked an accumulation of endogenous glycinin, which is encoded by homologous genes to the target gene V3-1. Most of the transgenic plants expressing sGFP(S65T) showed highly accumulation of glycinin. The expression of sGFP(S65T) and V3-1 inherits into the next generations. sGFP(S65T) as a reporter gene may be useful to increase the transformation efficiency of transgenic soybean with avoiding gene co-suppression.

  • Mackinawite (FeS), as a ubiquitous reduced iron mineral, is known as a key controller of redox reactions in anaerobic subsurface environment. The reaction of FeS with redox-sensitive toxic element such as arsenic is substantially affected by pH conditions of the given environments. In this study, the interaction of As(V) with FeS was studied under strict anaerobic conditions with various pH conditions. The pH-dependent arsenic removal tests were conducted under wide ranges of pH conditions and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) was applied to investigate the reaction mechanisms under pH 5, 7, and 9. The removal efficiency of FeS for As(V) showed the higher removal of As(V) under low pH conditions and its removal efficiency decreased with increasing pH, and no As(V) reduction was observed in 1 g/L FeS solution. However, XAS analysis indicated the reduction of As(V) to As(III) occurred during reaction between FeS and As(V). The reduced form of As(III) was particularly identified as an arsenic sulfide mineral (As2S3) in all pH conditions (pH 5, 7, and 9). As2S3 precipitation was more pronounced in pH 5 where the solubility of FeS is higher than in other pH conditions. The linear combination fitting results of XAS demonstrated that As(V) removal mechanism is concerted processes of As2S3 precipitation and surface complexation of both arsenic species.

  • In this study, seismic elastic wave and dynamic elastic modulus properties are investigated by down-hole seismic tests that were applied to the 11 gneiss area. The research results show that the realtionship between the two properties are $V_s=0.5589{\times}V_p$ in gneiss. The relationship between the two properties are separated into two groups. Group 1 is influenced mainly by the specific gravity of rock, but group 2 is influenced mainly by the joint aperture. As weathering progresses, group 1 clearly shows a decreasing tendency. In fresh and slightly weathered rock-mass, correlations between $V_p$ and dynamic elastic modulus is expressed in linear line but in moderately-highly weathered rock-mass, correlations between $V_p$ and dynamic elastic modulus is expressed curve as a quadratic function. Correlations between $V_s$ and dynamic elastic modulus are analyzed similar with a $V_p$ case.

  • Extended elastic impedance (EEI) is an extension of elastic impedance (EI) which is a generalization of acoustic impedance (AI) for nonzero angles of incidence and can be tuned to be proportional to reservoir properties. In this study, we evaluated EEI inversion by estimating the P-($V_p$) and S-wave velocities ($V_s$), P-wave to S-wave velocity ratio ($V_p/V_s$), and Poisson's ratio of the Second Wall Creek Sand of the Teapot Dome field, Wyoming, USA. We also applied the EEI inversion technique to estimate porosity, gamma-ray values, and density of the Second Wall Creek Sand. Data used in the study include 3-D pre-stack seismic data from the southern part of the field and four wells, selected from a large well database. The $V_s$ logs at the wells were constructed from the $V_p$ logs using the empirical relationships. The percent prediction errors for the four velocity properties are less than about 5% except for Poisson's ratio at one well, supporting that the EEI inversion can be used in the prediction of rock properties. However, the results from the EEI inversion analysis of porosity, gamma-ray values, and density at the wells were unsatisfactory and thus these properties, which are not directly computed from velocities, may not be suitable for EEI inversion.
