  • Cystic endometrial hyperplasia (CEH) and uterine dilation (hydro-, muco-, hemato- and pyometra) are common uterine diseases in intact female dogs. The aim of the present study was to assess the usefulness of digital abdominal radiography in diagnosing uterine disease in intact female dogs. Two hundred and thirteen intact female dogs were included, and were classified into four groups on the basis of radiographic uterine visibility (visible/invisible) and ultrasonographic findings (normal uterus/abnormal uterine condition including CEH and uterine dilation). For each dog, the ratio of the maximum uterine diameter to the height of the fifth lumbar vertebral body (U/L5 ratio) was calculated on radiographs. There were 78 and 135 dogs in the normal and abnormal groups, respectively; 34.6% normal and 53.5% abnormal uteri were visible on abdominal radiographs. Our results suggested that a mean U/L5 ratio of $1.18{\pm}0.53$ ($mean{\pm}2SD$) indicated a normal radiographic uterus diameter, and that a value of > 1.60 should be used as an indicator of uterine disease in clinical practice. However, because false negative results were noted, radiography cannot replace ultrasonography for assessment of the uterus.

  • Objectives: To evaluate residual disease in uterine cervical cancer patients treated with teletherapy using combined high dose rate Cobalt-60 brachytherapy. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study of uterine cervical cancer patients, FIGO stages IB-IVB (International Federation of Gynecologists and Obstetricians recommendations), treated by radiotherapy alone between April 1986 and December 1988 was conducted and the outcomes analysed. The patients were treated using teletherapy 50 Gy/25 fractions, five fractions per week to the whole pelvis together with HDR Cobalt -60 afterloading brachytherapy of 850 cGy/fraction, weekly to point A for 2 fractions. Results: The study covered 141 patients with uterine cervical cancer. The mean age was 50.0 years with a range of 30-78 years. The mean tumor size was 4.1 cm in diameter (range 1-8 cm). Mean follow - up time was 2.94 years (range 1 month-6.92 years). The overall incidence of residual locoregional disease was 3.5%. Residual disease, according to stage IIB, IIIB and IVA was present in 2.78%, 3.37% and 50.0%. It was noted that there was no evidence of residual disease in stage IB and IIA cases. Conclusion: Combined teletherapy along with high dose rate Cobalt -60 brachytherapy of 850 cGy/fraction, weekly to point A for 2 fractions resulted in overall 3.5% residual disease and a 96.5% complete response. The proposed recommendation for improving outcome is initiation of measurements for early detection of disease.

  • Purpose : Dysfunctional uterine bleeding is an abnormal uterine bleeding without an organic disease. A hormone therapy or anti-depressant medicine is chosen to treat dysfunctional uterine bleeding. However sometimes it didn't work. Hysterectomy is recommended to stop bleeding but a lot of women are afraid of it. The purpose of this study is to show the possibility of oriental medical treatment for dysfunctional uterine bleeding in this case report. Methods : The 30-year-old female patient who had suffering from uterine bleeding was treated with hormone therapy and anti-depressant medicine. However she was bleeding again. She had no organic disease in some medical examination, finally she was recommended a hysterectomy. But she didn't want the operation. In addition, she started acute abdominal pain. She wanted a oriental medical treatment and we treated her from the May 14th 2005 to the June 4th 2005 in admission. We used Yikweseungyangtang(益胃升陽湯), Ojuksan(五積散), Kwibitang hap Gyoesamultang(歸婢湯合膠艾四物湯) for herb-medication. In acupuncture therapy, ST36(Chok-Samni 足三里) SP1(Eunbek, 隱白) SP6(Samumgyo, 三陰交) SP10(Hyulhae, 血海) Liv1(Daedon, 大敦) Liv3(Taechung, 太衝) LI4(Hapgok, 合谷) was selected. In moxa therapy CV4(Kwanwon, 關元), CV6(Kihae, 氣海), CVl2(Chung-wan, 中脘) was used. Results : After oriental medical treatment for 22 days, she stopped uterine bleeding and recovered her health. Conclusion : Oriental medical treatment is expected to have an effect on dysfuctional uterine bleeding with abdominal pain.

  • A total 5,946 cows from 24 dairy farms were carried out for the improvement of reproductive performance. Dairy cows in post-parturition 30 day were performed periodic reproductive examination to check for recovery of post-parturition ovary and uterus and for the early diagnosis of reproductive disease. The results obtained from this studies were as follow. The result of 1,126 cows with ovario-uterine disease were 579 slient heat and error of estrus detection (51.4%), 296 ovarian disease (26.3%), 248 uterine disease (22%), mummification and freematin were each 1 head (0.1%), respectively. Hormonal therapeutic effects were follicular cyst 81.5%, luteal cyst 90.7%, endometritis 86.9%, mucometra 90.1%, pyometra 60.9%, respectively. In cows, even if the 1st treatment fails, 2nd, 3rd treatment were performed. Therapeutic effect of 2nd, 3rd were reduced, but the number of cured cows were gradually increased. The cured cows after hormonal treatment were performed service repeatedly and the cumulative conception rate were increased. The cows treated with hormones at first service, the conception rate were follicular cyst 26%, luteal cyst 64.1%, endometritis 38.7%, mucometra 40%, pyometra 20.5%, respectively. The cumulative conception rates were increased by repeated service follicular cyst 57.3%, luteal cyst 84.6%, endometritis 67%, mucometra 75%, pyometra 64.1%, respectively.

  • Background: Uterine papillary serous tumors are rarely seen and behave aggressively. Our aim was to evaluate uterine papillary serous tumors arising from polyps. Materials and Methods: Clinicopathological data of patients with uterine serous cancer arising from a polyp at the Gynecological Oncology Department of Zekai Tahir Burak Women's Health Education and Research Hospital were reviewed retrospectively. Results: We analyzed patients according to FIGO 2009 staging system as stage 1A and higher than stage 1A (3 and 6, respectively). All the patients were postmenopausal. Mean CA-125, CA-19.9 and CA15.3 levels were elevated in higher than stage 1A group. However we did not find a statistical difference between age, parity, polyp size, CA-125, CA-15.3, CA-19.9 and CEA levels. Lympho-vascular space invasion (LVSI) showed predictivity for advanced disease (p=0.025). Conclusions: The histopathologic nature of uterine serous carcinoma is a unique entity. LVSI is a prognosticator for defining an advanced stage uterine papillary tumor.

  • Endometriosis is classically defined as the growth of endometrial glands and stroma at extra-uterine sites. Although it is a common gynecological problem accompanied by chronic pelvic pain, infertility, and adhesion formation, the etiology of this disease is unknown. Endometriosis pathogenesis may involve endocrine and immune dysregulation since uterine endometrial growth is regulated by sex hormone in concert with bioactive mediators produced by uterine immune and endocrine cells.
