  • In cognitive radio network (CRN), spectrum sensing is an elementary level of technology for non-interfering to licensed user. Required sample number for spectrum sensing is directly related to the throughput of secondary user and makes the tradeoff between the throughput of secondary user and interference to primary user. Required spectrum sensing sample is derived from required false alarm, detection probability and minimum required SNR of primary user (PU). If we make clustering and minimize the required transmission boundary of secondary user (SU), we can relax the required PU SNR for spectrum sensing because the required SNR for PU signal sensing is related to transmission range of SU. Therefore we can achieve efficient throughput of CRN by minimizing spectrum sensing sample. For this, we design the tradeoff between gain and loss could be obtained from clustering, according to the size of cluster members through game theory and simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • In order to utilize the licensed channel of cognitive radio (CR) when the primary user (PU) is detected busy, a benefit-exchange access mode based on cooperative communication is proposed to allow secondary user (SU) to access the busy channel through giving assistance to PU's communication in exchange for some transmission bandwidth. A holistic joint optimization problem is formulated to maximize the total throughput of CR system through jointly optimizing the parameters of cooperative spectrum sensing (CSS), including the local sensing time, the pre-configured sensing decision threshold, the forward power of cooperative communication, and the bandwidth and transmission power allocated to SUs in benefit-exchange access mode and traditional access mode, respectively. To solve this complex problem, a combination of bi-level optimization, interior-point optimization and exhaustive optimization is proposed. Simulation results show that, compared with the tradition throughput maximizing model (TTMM), the proposed holistic joint optimization model (HJOM) can make use of the channel effectively even if PU is busy, and the total throughput of CR obtains a considerable improvement by HJOM.

  • This paper considers a wideband cognitive radio network which can simultaneously sense multiple narrowband channels and thus aggregate the detected available channels for transmission and proposes a novel cognitive radio system that exhibits improved sensing throughput and can save power consumption of secondary user (SU) compared to the conventional cognitive radio system studied so far. More specifically, under the proposed cognitive radio system, we study the problem of designing the optimal sensing time and power allocation strategy, in order to maximize the ergodic throughput of the proposed cognitive radio system under two different schemes, namely the wideband sensing-based spectrum sharing scheme and the wideband opportunistic spectrum access scheme. In our analysis, besides the average interference power constraint at primary user, the average transmit power constraint of SU is also considered for the two schemes and then a subgradient algorithm is developed to obtain the optimal sensing time and the corresponding power allocation strategy. Finally, numerical simulations are presented to verify the performance of the two proposed schemes.

  • In this paper, we introduce an adaptive radio resource allocation for IP-based mobile satellite services. We also present a synchronous multibeam CDMA satellite system using an orthogonal resource sharing mechanism among downlink beams for the adaptive packet transmission. The simulation results, using a Ka-band mobile satellite channel and various packet scheduling schemes, show that the proposed system and resource allocation scheme improves the beam throughput by more than two times over conventional systems. The simulation results also show that, in multibeam satellite systems, a system-level adaptation to a user's channel and interference conditions according to user locations and current packet traffic is more efficient in terms of throughput improvement than a user-level adaptation.

  • We consider user pairing and resource allocation for the uplink of cellular systems employing virtual multiple input multiple output (MIMO). As a multiple access scheme, discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiple access (DFTS-OFDMA) is adopted for more flexible resource allocation than single carrier (SC)-OFDMA adopted in the Long Term Evolution (LTE) system. We formulate the optimization problems of user pairing and resource allocation to maximize the throughput of the DFTS-OFDMA system under different constraints. The DFTS-OFDMA allowing non-contiguous subcarrier allocation and redundant user assignment provides a better throughput than the SC-FDMA at lower complexity in finding the optimal solution but at the cost of the increased control information indicating the allocated resources.

  • The present paper proposes two different packet scheduling algorithms in the IEEE 802.16e type TDD-OFDMA downlink, which are the weighted fair scheduling(WFS) and the throughput guarantee scheduling(TGS). The performance of proposed scheduling algorithms are compared to some of conventional schedulers such as round robin(RR), proportional fair(PF), fast fair throughput(FFTH), and fair throughput(FH) in terms of service coverage, effective throughput and fairness at 64 kbps and 128 kbps minimum user throughput requirements. For a relatively smaller throughput(64 kbps) requirement, the proposed algorithms provide higher improvement in the number of users per sector within 95$\%$ service coverage while satisfying the lxEV-DV fairness criterion. For a relatively larger throughput(128 kbps) requirement, the proposed algorithms provide higher coverage enhancement while maintaining the same effective aggregate throughput over PF scheduler.

  • Energy harvesting technique is an energy charging technique for communication device in energy-constrained environment. Recently, energy harvesting technique that harvests energy from wireless radio frequency signal is proposed. Representatively, there are time switching technique and power splitting technique. This paper proposes an optimal harvesting time allocation scheme in a wireless cognitive relay network when secondary user relay uses energy harvesting technique to transmit information. Secondary user relay receives information and energy simultaneously from the secondary user source's signal via time switching technique. We aim to maximize the instantaneous throughput by optimizing harvesting time of the secondary user relay. Simulation results show that using optimized harvesting time gets larger instantaneous throughput compared to using constant harvesting time.

  • In this paper, we propose a joint power control strategy for both the uplink and downlink transmission by considering the energy requirements of the user equipments' uplink data transmissions in data and energy integrated communication networks (DEINs). In DEINs, the base station (BS) adopts the power splitting (PS) aided simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) technique in the downlink (DL) transmissions, while the user equipments (UEs) carry out their own uplink (UL) transmissions by exploiting the energy harvested during the BS's DL transmissions. In our DEIN model, there are M UEs served by the BS in order to fulfil both of their DL and UL transmissions. The orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) technique is adopted for supporting the simultaneous transmissions of multiple UEs. Furthermore, a transmission frame is divided into N time slots in the medium access control (MAC) layer. The mathematical model is established for maximizing the sum-throughput of the UEs' DL transmissions and for ensuring their fairness during a single transmission frame T, respectively. In order to achieve these goals, in each transmission frame T, we optimally allocate the BS's power for each subcarrier and the PS factor for each UE during a specific time slot. The original optimisation problems are transformed into convex forms, which can be perfectly solved by convex optimisation theories. Our numerical results compare the optimal results by conceiving the objective of maximising the sum-throughput and those by conceiving the objective of maximising the fair-throughput. Furthermore, our numerical results also reveal the inherent tradeoff between the DL and the UL transmissions.

  • The effect of spreading gain control on the throughput of a CDMA slotted ALOHA system is considered. Mobile users transmit packets over a shared channel, and the packets transmitted in the same time slot over the shared channel act as simultaneous access interference (SAI). When using spread-spectrum signal, a CDMA slotted ALOHA channel achieves high probability of capture due to the property of high title resolution, and the bit rate of user information is determined by spreading gain. When the SAI level gets larger, the high value of spreading gain enhances the packet throughput by increasing the probability of a successful packet transmission, while it degrades the of the effective throughput by reducing the user information bits carried within a packer. To solve the problem, we investigated the effect of the capture probability and the SAI level on these system throughputs, and evaluated the throughput performance of the system for each spreading gain control scheme. The results showed that the maximum effective throughput could be achieved with an unified method despite the variation of the SAI level by deriving an optimal value of the spreading gain according to 171e system states.

  • In this paper, we propose a new frequency allocation method for improvement of edge and low 5% user throughputs. Although many kinds of inter cell interference mitigation methods have been proposed, those have still high complexity of implementation. The proposed algorithm has lower complexity and higher edge user throughput than conventional algorithms since the same frequency allocation method is applied in all cell. Finally, we analyze and compare the edge and low 5% user throughputs using a system level simulation (SLS).
