Accidental events such as collisions, groundings, and hydrocarbon explosions in marine structures can cause catastrophic damage. Thus, it is extremely important to predict the extent of such damage, which determines the total amount of oil spills and the residual hull girder strength. Punching fracture tests were conducted by Choung (2009b), where various sizes of indenters and circular unstiffened steel plates with different thicknesses were used to quasi-statically realize damage extents. A three-dimensional fracture strain surface was developed based on a reference (Choung et al., 2015b), where the average stress triaxiality and average normalized Lode angle were used as the parameters governing the fracture of ductile steels. In this study, new numerical analyses were performed using very fine axisymmetric elements in combination with an Abaqus user-subroutine to implement the three-dimensional fracture strain surface. Conventional numerical analyses were also conducted for the tests to identify the best fit fracture strain values by changing the fracture strains. Based on the phenomenon of the average normalized Lode angle starting out positive and then becoming slightly negative, it was inferred that the shear stress primarily dominates in determining the fractures locations, with a partial contribution from the compressive stress. It should be stated that the three-dimensional fracture surface effectively predicted at least the shear stress-dominant fracture behavior of a mild steel.

Polyurethane Foam(PUF), a outstanding thermal insulation material, is used for various structures as being composed with other materials. These days, PUF composed with glass fiber, Reinforced PUF(R-PUF), is used for a insulation system of LNG Carrier and performs function of not only the thermal insulation but also a structural member for compressive loads like a sloshing load. As PUF is a porous material made by mixing and foaming, mechanical properties depend on volume fraction of voids which is a dominant parameter on density. Thus, In this study, density is considered as the effect parameter on mechanical properties of Polyurethane Foam, and mechanical behavior for compression of the material is described by using modified Gurson damage model.

In this study a cohesive zone model was used to simulate the delamination phenomena which occurs by a successive crack initiation and propagation in composite laminates. The cohesive zone model was incorporated to the classical finite element method via cohesive element formulation and then implemented into the user-subroutine UEL of a commercial finite element program Abaqus. To validate the formulation and implementation of the cohesive element the finite element results were compared with the experimental data of double cantilever beam and end notched flexure tests. The numerical results well agree with the experimental load-displacement curves. Also the effect of the elastic stiffness and the size of the cohesive element on the global load-displacement curves were studied numerically. To minimize the mesh-dependency of the crack propagation path and eliminate the zig-zag patterns in the load-displacement curve, cohesive elements should be refined at the crack-tip.
The construction method to prevent the frost heave or thaw settlement is called the ground stabilization method, and the thermo-syphon is one of the typical ground stabilization methods. The thermo-syphon has recently been developed with a simple analysis model and thermal analysis has been carried out, but the frost heave of frost susceptible soil was not considered. This study was conducted using ABAQUS internal user subroutine to develop the numerical analysis model (Coupled thermo-mechanical) that can simultaneously perform thermal analysis for the temperature change of the soil according to the thermo-syphon and structural analysis to predict the frost heave of the soil accordingly. As a result of the numerical analysis, the frost heave of the soil decreased as the performance of the thermo-syphon increased. As for the main results, when the thermo-syphon which has contain 25%, 50%, and 100% of refrigerant filling ratio was applied, the reduction ratio of the frost heave was 5.5%, 14.4%, and 21% respectively.

In this paper, the ductile fracture criteria for a marine structural steel (EH36) are presented and validated. The theoretical background of the recently developed Hosford-Coulomb (HC) fracture strain model and the DSSE fracture strain model which was developed to apply to the shell elements is described. In order to accurately estimate the flow stress in the large strain range up to the fracture, the material constants for the combined Swift-Voce constitutive equation were derived by the numerical analyses of the smooth and notched specimens made from the EH36 steel. As a result of applying the Swift-Voce flow stress to the other notched specimen model, a very accurate load - displacement curve could be derived. The material constants of the HC fracture strain and DSSE fracture strain models were independently calibrated based on the numerical analyses for the smooth and notch specimen tests. The user subroutine (VUMAT of Abaqus) was developed to verify the accuracy of the combined HC-DSSE fracture strain model. An asymmetric notch specimen was used as verification model. It was confirmed that the fracture of the asymmetric specimen can be accurately predicted when a very small solid elements are used together with the HC fracture strain model. On the other hand, the combined HC-DSSE fracture strain model can predict accurately the fracture of shell element model while the shell element size effect becomes less sensitive.
In this paper, a progressive failure analysis method was developed using the Hashin failure criterion and crack band model. Using the failure criterion, the failure initiation was evaluated. If the failure initiation is occurred, the damage variables at each failure modes (fiber tension & compression, matrix tension & compression) was calculated according to linear softening degradation behavior and the variables are used to derive the damaged stiffness matrix. The damaged stiffness matrix is reflected to damaged material and the progressive failure analysis is continued until the damage variables to be 1 that complete failure of material. A series of processes were performed using FE commercial code ABAQUS with user defined material subroutine (UMAT). To evaluate the proposed progressive failure model, the experimental results of open hole composite laminate tests was compared with numerical result. Using digital image correlation system, the strain behavior also was compared. The proposed numerical results were coincided well with the experimental results.

It is well recognized that residual stresses of the rails, generated from the manufacturing process including roller straightening and heat treatment, play an important role in determining fatigue and fracture properties of the rails. Thus, it has been a challenge to measure the residual stresses accurately. In this work, contour method was employed to evaluate the residual stresses existing in interior of the rails. The cross section perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the rail was cut at a very slow rate using electric discharge machining (EDM), after which a laser-based flexural measuring instrument enabled us to precisely measure the flection of the cross section. The measured data were converted into the residual stresses using the commercial finite element package, ABAQUS, through a user-defined element (UEL) subroutine, and the residual stresses of the new rails (50N, KR60, UIC60) with three different specifications were compared.
The load distribution and deformation of rock-socketed drilled shafts subjected to axial loads are evaluated by a load-transfer method. The emphasis is on quantifying the effect of coupled soil resistance in rock-socketed drilled shafts using the 2D elasto-plastic finite element analysis. Slippage and shear load transfer behavior at the pile-soil interface are investigated by using a user-subroutine interface model (FRlC). It is shown that the coupled soil resistance provides the influence of pile toe settlement as the shaft resistance is increased to an ultimate limit state. The results show that the coupling effect is closely related to the value of pile diameter over rock mass modulus (D/$E_{mass}$) and the ratio of total shaft resistance against total applied load ($R_s$/Q). Through comparisons with field case studies, the 2D numerical analysis reseanably presented load transfer of pile and coupling effect due to the transfer of shaft shear loading, and thus represents a significant improvement in the prediction of load deflections of drilled shafts.

We conducted a dynamic analysis of an underwater test collector, which operates on extremely soft soil of deep-seafloor. The underwater test collector consists of nodule pick-up device, vehicle tracks, nodule crusher, loading frame and electric-electronic system. The weight of underwater test collector is about 8600 kg. The average normal pressure, that the underwater test collector supports, is about 6.0 kPa. The dynamic analysis model of underwater test collector is developed using commercial software RecurDyn-LM and Visual Fortran 90. A terramechanics model of extremely soft soil is implemented to the software based on user-written subroutine and applied to the dynamic analysis of the underwater test collector model. The dynamic responses of test collector are studied with respect to track velocities, terrain conditions, and coefficients of added mass and drag.

Blast-induced anisotropic rock damage around a blast-hole was analyzed by a using numerical method with user-defined subroutine based on continuum damage mechanics. Anisotropic blasting pressure was evaluated by applying anisotropic ruck characteristics to analytical solution which is a function of explosive and rock properties. Anisotropic rock damage was evaluated by applying the proposed anisotropic blasting pressure. Blast-induced isotropic rock damage was also analyzed. User-defined subroutines to solve anisotropic and isotropic damage model were coded. Initial rock damages in natural ruck were considered in anisotropic and isotropic damage models. Blasting pressure and elastic modulus of rock were major influential parameters from parametric analysis results of isotropic rock damage. From the results of anisotropic rock damage analysis, blasting pressure was the most influential parameter. Anisotropic rock damage area in horizontal direction was approximately 34% larger and about 12% smaller in vertical direction comparing with isotropic rock damage area. Isotropic rock damage area under fully coupled charge condition was around 30 times larger than that under decoupled charge condition. Blasting pressure under fully coupled charge condition was estimated to be more than 10 times larger than that of decoupled charge condition.
