Recently, due to the erosion damage that were generated increasingly at alloy metals of slide bearing by cavity of lubricating oil with tendency of high speed and high output of reciprocating engine, there is a need to study the process on the formation of cavitation erosion, and the characteristic of cavitation erosion at lubricating oil environments under various condition for marine ship. Therefore, the apparatus of cavitation erosion experiment used 20 KHz, $24 \mu m$ piezoelectric vibrator. The main results obtained through this test method are as follows: 1. The max. erosion rate at lubricating oil environments was related to the change of space, oil film thickness, and shown to tendency of gear oil>system oil>turbine oil>mixed oil environments with different viscosity. 2. The pitted hole by cavitation erosion at high viscosity oil environments became small and deep, and in addition to, they appeared to be wide and shallow at low viscosity.

Recently, because the lubricating oil showed a tendency to be emulsified and oxidized by high speed, high output and the extension of maintenance & conservation of marine engine, the cavitation erosion-corrosion at such an environment became a big problem on effective performance of engine. Therefore, there was a need to study the behavior and protection of erosion-corrosion damage, and then applied inhibitor to a protective method of cavitation erosion- corrosion damage. At this time, test environments were marine lubricating oil & various emulsified oil that mixed distilled water and sea water etc., and also used 20KHz, 24.mu.m piezoelectric vibrator as an experimental apparatus of cavitation erosion. With this apparatus, we investigated an influence of the emulsified oil on characteristics of erosion-corrosion and protection for erosion-corrosion by inhibitor at slide bearing metals.
It was reviewed that the kinds of lubricating oil, viscosity, temperature and strength of materials affected the wear of the surface heat treatment. When lubricants is used under severe running conditions, their tribological characteristics are very important. We have studied the lubricating oil viscosity, kinds of additives and their amounts, and lubricating oil temperatures were changed. In order to study the effect of oil temperature on the wear of the surface, the temperature of the oil was changed for the same sample. It was shown from the test results that wear is not greatly affected by the amount of ZnDTP (Zinc dialkyl dithio phosphate) antiwear agent, but EP (Extreme pressure) additives are less effective against wear than ZnDTP additives. The viscosity of lubricating oil and its temperature greatly affect the wear of the surface. Combining all the wear data with those of the surface strength, it was observed that the higher the load, the lower the scratch of wear, and also in the case of the same running load, the lower the wear, the longer the life of the surface strength.

This paper presents a discussion on lubricating oil filters. The maintenance of lubricating oil filters can improve the performance of mechanical systems and extend the service life of the lubricating oil. Therefore, the effective management of the lubricating oil can extend the service life of the machine and reduce maintenance costs. A representative method for managing lubricating oil is filtering the lubricating oil using a lubricant filter. However, effectively managing a lubricating oil using a lubricant filter requires an understanding of the related knowledge. In this paper, we present the definition, classification, characteristics, specifications, performance, and self-cleaning function of lubricating oil filters. The lubricant filters are classified based on the filter material, filtering method, filtering location, and amount of filtered fluid. Cellulose and glass fiber materials are conventionally used as materials for lubricant filters, and recently, metal materials, which show excellent durability, are being increasingly adopted. The filtering methods can be classified into physical, chemical, magnetic, and electric field methods, and the lubricant filters can be classified according to their location in the lubrication system. The beta ratio and efficiency of the lubricant filter can be determined based on the performance of the filter. Finally, there are many products or technologies that add a self-cleaning function to the filter to remove foreign substances or contaminants for efficient management.

This paper describes the rheological behavior study such as viscosity and change of shear stress regarding marine lubricating oil according to the amount of Marine Gas Oil (MGO) dilution. The viscosity reduction due to fuel dilution is crucially important characteristic to decreasing engine durability because of the abrasion of piston ring or liner. The lubricating oil used in this paper was blended with magnetic stirrer diluted High Sulfur Diesel (HSD, 0.05 wt%) ratio of 3 %, 6 %, 10 %, 15 % and 20 %. The viscosity and shear stress of diluted lubricating oil were measured with the temperature range from $-10^{\circ}C$ to $80^{\circ}C$ using a rotary viscometer (Brookfield Viscometer). As the amount of MGO dilution increasing in lubricating oil, the viscosity and stress of those decreased, because the lubricating oil diluted MGO with low viscosity show the trends to decreased viscosity and shear stress. Especially, the viscosity and shear stress of lubricating oil radically decreased at low temperature ($0{\sim}-10^{\circ}C$) and doesn't effect in MGO dilution at over $40^{\circ}C$. As temperature risen, the reduction of the viscosity and shear stress in lubricating oil shows the Newtonian behavior. The lubricating oil was required to check up periodically to improve engine durability since the viscosity reduction by MGO dilution accelerating the engine abrasion.

Presence of water in the lubricating oils could be one of the first indicators of potentially expensive and possibly catastrophic failure of the machine as it may cause displace the oil films to prevent the lubrication function of the oil or chemically react with many oil additives resulting in the oil degradation. In order to detect water content quantitatively in lubricating oils many methods and sensors has been developed. Among these, capacitive sensors including sensitive layer, whose dielectric factor changes according to the water content absorbed in the layer, are proposed mainly in the market. But these sensors are not sensitive to a high water content. Besides, the absorbing layer soils in time. In this work, an evaporation of water moisture from oil into air volume above lubricant surface and condensation of water vapor at a cooling surface was used to measure water content quantitatively in an lubricating oil. Laboratory test results of a prototype sensor were presented. Test results showed that the proposed method could be avaliable to measure a low levels of oil moisture.
The performance of porous bearing under different lubricants and lubricating conditions was experimentally investigated in this study. In order to carry out the experiments, a new test rig was designed to determine the tribological properties of based sintered bronze journal bearings that were manufactured by powder metallurgy (P/M) techniques. To determine the effects of lubricating conditions with and without oil supplement (OS) on the tribological characteristics of these bearings under static loading and periodic loadings, some experiments were carried out using different lubricants. In the tests, pure base oil (SAE 20W50), two fully formulated commercial engine oils (SAE20W50) and lubricating oils with commercial additive concentration ratio of 3% were used. The worn surfaces of test bearings were examined using optical microscopy. Experimental results showed that the change in friction coefficient was more stable and in smaller magnitude under static loading than that of periodic loading. In addition, the friction coefficient and the wear rate conducted with base oil resulted in higher values than those of fully formulated oils with and without OS lubricating conditions. The experimental results obtained in this study indicated that the correct selection of lubricant and suitable running conditions were very important on the tribological characteristics of porous bearings.
The permeation characteristics and reclamation efficiency of waste lubricating oil were studied as a function of the types of ceramic composite membranes and the membrane separation process variables. The oil permeability of the TiO2 composite membrane(pore size 0.015 $\mu\textrm{m}$) was directly proportional to the crossflow velocity(0.22∼0.9 m/s) and temperature(150$^{\circ}C$∼200$^{\circ}C$). In the batch concentration process, as the concentration factor increased, both the permeability and the ash content of the permeate decreased. The average ash contents of the total permeate through the A6 alumina membrane(average pore size 0.8$\mu\textrm{m}$), Z1/A6 and Z1/A4(pore size 0.23$\mu\textrm{m}$)/A7(pore size 6$\mu\textrm{m}$) zirconia composite membrances(average pore size 0.07$\mu\textrm{m}$) were about 0.063 wt%, 0.045wt% and 0.08wt% in the region of 1∼2 concentration factor, respectively. The ash content of the mixed permeate through the A6 alumina and zirconia composite membrane was about 0.06 wt% and it can be also reduced to 0.06 wt% in the Z1/A6 membrane and below 0.003 wt% in the TiO2/Z1/A6 membrane. It was concluded that the treated oil obtained from the multi-step membrane separation process could be used as reclaimed lubricating oil as well as reclained fuel oil.
The yield of oil was rapidly increased at $440^{\circ}C$ compared to $400^{\circ}C$ and $420^{\circ}C$ when the isothermal pyrolysis of waste ship lubricating oil was carried out in tubular type reactor, and pyrolysis was almost finished within 30 min. The yield of gas was decreased depending on the reaction temperature in which that of solid was not much changed. Pyrolysis experiments of waste ship lubricating oil were carried out with used ZSM-5 produced from a petrochemical process. The yield of gas was highly increased in the case of used ZSM-5 and fresh ZSM-5 compared to the case without catalyst. The produced oil and gas were almost constant for fresh ZSM-5 and used ZSM-5 at the same reaction temperature. In the reaction temperature $400{\sim}440^{\circ}C$, the selectivity of $C_5-C_{11}$ was two times higher with fresh ZSM-5 and used ZSM-5 than the case without catalyst.

When Lubricants is used under severe running condition, tribological characteristics is very important. I have studied the lubricating oil viscosity, kinds of additives and lubricating oil temperatures were changed. In order to study the effect of oil temperature on the wear of the surface, the temperature of the oil was changed for the same sample. Moreover, the temperatures of three kinds of oils which have very different viscosities at room temperature, were varied while the oil viscosity was unchanged. It was shown from the test results that wear is not greatly affected by the amount of ZnDTP antiwear agent, but E-P additives are less effective against wear than ZnDTP additives. The viscosity of lubricating oil and its tempea-ature greatly affect the wear of the surface.
