  • In spite of important researches and translational works of the Joseon mathematical treatises in the 80's and on, these results were almost out of reach to the school teachers as well as students due to the antiquity of their contents and the terms used. In order to make our traditional mathematics approachable to the middle and high school students, it will be educationally meaningful to reinterpret them tuned at the student's level using modern terminology and symbols. In this study, we reinterpreted 9 problems from Cheukryang Dohae, which is one of the representative mathematical books of Joseon Dynasty. We used the terminology and symbols from the school curriculum. We also reconstructed two of them using modern metrologies adapted to modern situations adding illustrations and photos, so that they are useful at the teaching site.

  • Objectives Some major Chinese medical classics like Huangdineijing (黃帝內經) and Nanjing (難經) assert that a normal person breaths 13,500 times every day. It's just half of real breathing cycles of human. So I tried to find a reasonable explanation to solve this conflict between truth and literal description. Materials and methods To find breath count descriptions in Chinese ancient books, I used Kanseki Repository (http://kanripo.org/). To find precedent research on this topic, I used China National Knowledge Infrastructure (http://cnki.net). Results 33 books refers to human breath cycles for a day, and most of them introduce 13,500 as human breathing frequency of one day. Some recent papers on Laoguanshan (老官山) Western Han dynasty manuscripts show new clues on this topic. Conclusion I assume that 13,500 cycles, the incorrect human breathing frequency of a day, might be originated from adjusting the meaning and usage of the word "Xi (息)".

  • For the last few years, smart devices have begun to occupy an essential place in the life of children, by allowing them to access a variety of language activities and books. Various studies are being conducted on using smart devices for education. Our study extracts images and texts from kids' book with smart devices and matches the extracted images and texts to create new images that are not represented in these books. The proposed system will enable the use of smart devices as educational media for children. A deep convolutional generative adversarial network (DCGAN) is used for generating a new image. Three steps are involved in training DCGAN. Firstly, images with 11 titles and 1,164 images on ImageNet are learned. Secondly, Tesseract, an optical character recognition engine, is used to extract images and text from kids' book and classify the text using a morpheme analyzer. Thirdly, the classified word class is matched with the latent vector of the image. The learned DCGAN creates an image associated with the text.

  • As Lee Heon-gil's books have been handed down in oral tradition and written form, there are several different versions including the one edited by the author. Books known to be his writings include Eulmisinbang, Majinbang contained in Susangsingam, and Majinbang, Majingibang and Majinbibang mentioned in Joseoneukhaksageupjilbyeongsa. Among Lee Heon-gil's books, Eulmisinbang was mentioned first in literature. Its original version is missing, but a large part of it is quoted in Magwahoitong, through which we can see the contents of Eulmisinbang. The meanings of Eulmisinbang are as follows. First, it is the most reliable woodblock-printed version as it was the base of Magwahoitong. Second, quotations in Magwahoitong are so accurate that they demonstrate the original texts of Eulmisinbang and can be used in comparison with other versions. Third, Eulmisinbang has the largest volume of contents among Lee Heon-gil's books. Susangsingam was printed again in the early 1900s by combing Majinbang and Sanbangsurok. Majinbang included in the book had been known to come from China but, through comparison with the original, it was found to be the same as Eulmisinbang. Majinbang is considered to be Eulmisinbang handed down in different name, and shows the original structure of Eulmisinbang. Considering its table of contents and the contents, Majinbang mentioned in Joseoneukhaksageupjilbyeongsa looks the same as Majinbang included in Susangsingam. Majingibang was edited by extracting the quotations of Eulmisinbang in Magwahoitong, and was reprinted in the name of Majinbibang. Through analyzing Lee Heon-gil's books, we found two courses through which his books have been handed down. First, Eulmisinbang was quoted separately according to the new structure of Magwahoitong, and the structure of Magwahoitong had been maintained and reprinted under the titles of Majingibang and Majinbibang. Second, Eulmisinbang had maintained its original structure, handed down in the name of Majinbang, and reprinted under the title of Susangsingam. Based on the findings, we selected the quotations of Eulmisinbang in Magwahoitong and Majinbang included in Susangsingam as texts for studying Lee Heon-gil's medicine for measles. Accordingly, it looks likely to rebuild a new research text based on the two woodblock-printed versions, and it will be a crucial material for studying Lee Heon-gil's medicine for measles.

  • Fabrics created unique features through the change in various ways depending on the elements including fabric structure, threads, thickness, weaving, patterns and processing. This study examined the difference between texture and image depending on components of fabrics. In order to understand the trend of components of fabrics, the actual components of fabrics was analyzed by year, using the women's apparel trend books, Nelly Rodi Fabrics and Promostyl Fabrics. This study analyzed Spring/Summer season and Fall/Winter season from 2002 to 2012. Frequency analysis, cross-tabulation analysis, multiple response cross tabulation analysis were implemented using SPSS 18.0. The followings are the analysis results. For fabric composition, Spring/Summer season used cotton fabric the most. Cotton fabric accounted for relatively high usage in 2005, 2007 and 2008. Fall/Winter season used wool the most in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005. In case of fiber blend by fabric composition, cotton was blended with other fibers in Spring/Summer season except wool. The fiber blending ratio of wool was the highest in Fall/Winter season. Wool was blended in most fabrics. More than two patterns were mixed for fabric patterns. The fabric patterns were applied the most in 2012. For fabric processing, the fabrics by sensitivity-functional processing were continuously used every year and the surface finish showed relatively high usage in 2002 and 2011. In conclusion, this study will build the systematic data for 11 years including fabric trends in the past. It can improve specialization, systematization and efficiency in fabric planning.

  • This paper has made a close examination of Shingan Goohwang Chowalyo(1660), Cheesaeng yoram(1691), Sallim Gyungjae(1715) and Imwon simyook Jee(1827), to grasp what kinds of famine relief foods have been analyzed in terms of nutrition elements and cooking methods. And also this paper has surveyed the changes of these famine relief foods according to the times. Three hundred forty one famine relief foods are recorded in the above mentioned books, Among them, ten foods are recorded in common in these four books: pine needles, elm tree skin, soybeans, wax, jujubes, black beans, glutinous millet, turnip seeds white pine-mushroons and Chool-Atractylodes japonica. The methods of cooking and processing are most varied in the order of pine needles, black beans and elm tree skin, Pine needles are rich in protein and fat, and so may be regarded as the first of famine relief foods. Elm tree skin is of more than 50% carbohydrate and may be used in plate of cereals. I addition to these, Hwangui-milk vetch, Choonsu-cedrela Sinensis, Tacksa-Alisma Orientale Juzep and some other foods contain starch, glucose, fatty acids, and amino acids. So they may be used for replacing cereals and relieving famine. Before these famine relief foods are cooked or processed, according to their ingredients they should be soaked in water for a time in some cases the water should be changed several times. In Shingan Goohwang Chowalyo and Cheesaeng Yoram, measuring units are rarely recorded, while in sallim Gyungjae, they are explicitly shown. Imwon Simyook Jee clearly shows the use of oriental medicine materials. And the fur above mentioned books show no record of famine relief animal foods. To these days, vegetables have been boiled, squeezed and seasoned with salt and oil, but the better the economic conditions become, the less other famine relief foods are used. Nevertheless it is expected that these natural foods can be made favorite dishes with the best use of their good flavors and tastes.
