Tidal current energy is an important alternative energy resource among the various ocean energy resources available. The tidal currents in the South-Western sea of Korea can be utilized for the development of tidal current power generation. Tidal power generation can be beneficial for many fishing nurseries and nearby islands in the southwest region of Korea. Moreover, tidal power generation is necessary for promoting energy self-sufficient islands. As tidal currents are always available, power generation is predictable; thus, tidal power is a reliable renewable energy resource. The selection of an appropriate hydrofoil is important for designing a tidal current turbine. This study concentrates on the selection and numerical analysis of four different hydrofoils (MNU26, NACA63421, DU91_W2_250, and DU93_W_210LM). Blade element momentum theory is used for configuring the design of a 50 W class turbine rotor blade. The optimized blade geometry is used for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis with hexahedral numerical grids. Among the four blades, NACA63421 blade showed the maximum power coefficient of 0.45 at a tip speed ratio of 6. CFD analysis is used to investigate the power coefficient, pressure coefficient, and streamline distribution of a 50 W class horizontal axis tidal current turbine for different hydrofoils.
This paper addresses the problem of the modeling and vibration control of tapered rotating blade modeled as thin-walled beams and incorporating damping capabilities. The blade model incorporates non-classical features such as anisotropy, transverse shear, secondary warping and includes the centrifugal and Coriolis force fields. For the rotating blade system, a thorough validation and assessment. of a number of non-classical features including the taper characteristics is accomplished. The damping capabilities are provided by a system of piezoactuators bonded or embedded into the structure and spread over the entire span of the beam. Based on the converse piezoelectric effect, the piezoactuators produce a localized strain field in response to a voltage and consequently, a change of the dynamic response characteristics is induced. A velocity feedback control law relating the piezoelectrically induced transversal bending moment at the beam tip with the appropriately selected kinematical response quantity is used and thebeneficial effects upon the closed-loop dynamic characteristics of the blade are highlighted.

Surrogate modeling is applied to a compressor blade shape optimization to modify its stacking line and thickness to enhance adiabatic efficiency and total pressure ratio. Six design variables are defined by parametric curves and three objectives; efficiency, total pressure and a combined objective of efficiency and total pressure are considered to enhance the performance of compressor blade. Latin hypercube sampling of design of experiments is used to generate 55 designs within design space constituted by the lower and upper limits of variables. Optimum designs are found by formulating a PRESS (predicted error sum of squares) based averaging (PBA) surrogate model with the help of a gradient based optimization algorithm. The optimum designs using the current variables show that, to optimize the performance of turbomachinery blade, the adiabatic efficiency objective is improved substantially while total pressure ratio objective is increased a very small amount. The multi-objective optimization shows that the efficiency can be increased with the less compensation of total pressure reduction or both objectives can be increased simultaneously.
The spanwise aerodynamic loads of the wind turbine blade are investigated numerically. The blade shape such as twist and chord length along the blade span is obtained from the procedure of aerodynamically optimal design. The rated tip speed ratio and the rated wind velocity are set to 7 and 12m/s respectively. The BEM method is applied to obtain both the aerodynamic performance of the wind turbine (Fig.1) and the spanwise aerodynamic loads along the blade span including Prandtl's tip loss factor. The maximum running power coefficient is occurred around 90% radial position from hub (Fig.2). The distributed aerodynamic loads along the blade span can be used for structure analysis.

This study presents gas turbine cooling blade by using experimental and numerical works. The review cover researches related to cooling channels using finite element method in rotating blade. Also, the film cooling device and the heat transfer of the external surface of the blade are included. In addition, several methods to be used for the design of the blade, numerical method and experimental techniques are introduced. This work will contribute to improving the manufacturing of engine and the efficiency of gas turbine engines.
Shape optimization of a rotor blade in a single-stage transonic axial compressor has been performed using a response surface method and three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis. Two shape variables of the rotor blade, which are used to define a blade skew, are introduced to increase an adiabatic efficiency. Throughout the shape optimization of a rotor blade, the adiabatic efficiency is increased to about 2.2 percent compared to that of the reference shape of the stator. The increase in efficiency for the optimal shape of the rotor is due to the pressure enhancement, which is mainly caused by moving the separation position on the suction surface of rotor blade to the downstream direction.

The objective of this study is to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of a vertical axis wind turbine blade as the basic study of a design of a vertical axis wind turbine. The lift and drag coefficients of the various shape of the vortical axis wind turbine blades are analyzed and compared using the CFD code Fluent. To validate the numerical analysis, the predicted results of the Fluent are compared with those of the Xfoil code and the experimental results. We conclude that the program Fluent can be used to predict the aerodynamics of the wind turbine blade. By comparing the predicted results of the aerodynamic characteristics of the different shape of the blades, an appropriate shape of the blade is suggested to design the vortical axis wind turbine blade.
A grid generation algorithm associated with turbomachinery cascade flow fields has been developed. The present grid generation system consists of four separate modules. The system input is made of the results of the preliminary design, i.e., flow-path, aerodynamic conditions along the spanwise direction, and the blade profile data. The grid generation method generates a series of two-dimensional grids in the blade-to-blade passage to build up the three-¬dimensional grid, The numerical algorithm adopts the combination of the algebraic and elliptic method to create the internal grids efficiently and quickly. The resultant grids generated from each module of the system are used as the preprocessor for the performance prediction of the turbomachinery blade using Naveir-Stokes method in addition to the blade surface modelling for CAD data. For purposes of illustration, the grid generation system is applied to several complex geometries inculding a turbine rotor with and without a tip flow grid. Application to the blade design of the LP compressor was demonstrated to be very reliable and practical in support of design activities. This customized system are coupled strongly with the design procedure and reduces the man-hours required to predict the aerodynamic performance of the turbomachinery cascades using the CFD technique.
A multiblock grid generation has been applied to a Navier-Stokes design procedure of a axial-flow compressors. A multiblock structure simplifies the creation of structured H-grids about complex turbomachinery geometries and facilitate the creation of a grid in the tip flow region. The numerical algorithm adopts the combination of the algebraic and elliptic method to create the internal grids efficiently and quickly. The input module is made of the results of the preliminary design, i.e., flow-path, aerodynamic conditions along the spanwise direction, and the blade profile data. The final grids generated from each module of the system are used as the preprocessor for the performance prediction of the sectional blade, the blade-stacking process and the three-dimensional flow simulation inside the blade passage. Application to the blade design of the LP compressor was demonstrated to be very reliable and practical in support of design activities. This customized system are coupled strongly with the design procedure of the turbomachinery cascades using the Navier-Stokes technique.
This paper describes the structural design of small wind turbine blade by using design of experiments. Blade structure consists of skin, spar and foam. The materials for skin and spar are a kind of Glass/Epoxy and form is polyurethane. It has 7 lay-ups with different ply angle. A factorial design is applied to design the ply angles considering manufacturing constraints and to investigate the safety factor which is calculated by structural analysis. In order to perform the structural analysis, the commercial software ABAQUS is used. Tsai-Wu failure criterion is chosen to compute safety factor. The determination of the significance of effects in the experiments is made through the analysis of variance. The results show that ply angle at skin affects the safety factor of wind turbine blade. And from this result, optimal ply angles of composite blade are achieved.
