THE PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF A CIRCULATING WATER PUMP FOR A NUCLEAR POWER PLANT (원자력 발전소용 순환수 펌프의 성능해석)

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the suitable design for a domestic Circulating water pump(CWP), which is used in cooling-water intakes for the unit 3 and 4 of Yeonggwang nuclear power plant. All the simulations are performed, using CFD method with a commercial code STAR-CCM+ version 3.02. After modeling a present design of the pump, the flow around the rotating blade was calculated by using quasi-static method and sliding mesh method with the almost same condition as an actual state. Based on fundamental simulations with various depth of sea water, the reference pressure for the boundary condition of the present study was decided. To verify the reliability of the calculation results, the suction flow rate of the data was compared with that of the experimental data. As a result of this comparison, it is confirmed that two results are fairly consistent. For the improvement of the suction flow rate, computational analysis was done by changing a flow channel and blade shapes. It is shown that the suction flow rate of the new pump was improved.

Influence of the Unsteady Wake on the Flow and Heat Transfer in a Linear Turbine Cascade (비정상 후류가 선형터빈익렬의 유동 및 열전달에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • The influence of unsteady wake on the flow and heat transfer characteristics in a four-vane linear cascade was experimentally investigated. The unsteady wake was generated with four rotating rectangular plates located upstream of the cascade. Tested inlet Reynolds number based on chord length was set to 66,000 by controlling free-stream velocity. A hot-wire anemometer system was employed to measure turbulent velocity components. For the convective heat transfer coefficients measurement on turbine blade surface, thermochromic liquid crystal and gold film Intrex were used. It was found that the unsteady wake enhances the turbulent motion in the cascade passage and accordingly promotes the development and transition of boundary layer. It was found that the heat transfer coefficients on the blade surface increase as the plate rotating speed increases. However, the increasing of heat transfer coefficients is not significant in the case that Strouhal number is higher than 0.503.

  • this study, helicopter rotor flow is simulated by using a tightly coupled CFD/FreeWake method to describe wake characteristics and to calculate the flow field and rotor aerodynamics. In this tightly coupled CFD/FreeWake method, freewake model provides the boundary condition required in the CFD calculation and CFD provides the pressure distribution on blade surface used in feewake generation. To show the advantage of this method, the pressure distributions on blade surface of a hovering 2-bladed rotor are compared with other numerical methods. This tightly coupled CFD/FreeWake method shows good accuracy in the predicted results and efficient computation time.

  • Experiments were done for the comparison of performance and flow characteristics between a two stage axial flow fan and a counter-rotating axial flow fm. The fan performance curves were obtained by the Korean Standard Testing Methods for Turbo Fans and Blowers (KS B 6311). The fan flow characteristics were measured using a five-hole probe by the non-nulling method. Each stage of the two stage axial flow fan used for the present study has an eight bladed rotor and thirteen stator blades. The front and the rear rotor of the counter-rotating axial flow fan have eight blades each and are driven by coaxial counter rotating shafts through a gear box located between the rear rotor and the electric motor. Both of the two axial fan configurations use identical rotor blades and the same operating conditions for the one-to-one comparison of the two. Performance characteristics of the two configurations were obtained and compared by varying the blade setting angles and axial gaps between the blade rows. The passage flow fields between the hub and tip of the fans were measured and analyzed for the particular operating conditions of peak efficiency, minimum and maximum pressure coefficients.

  • Holographic interferometry technique has been used for the measurement of whole-field deformation with high sensitivity. However there are some difficulties in quantitatively analyzing the holographic fringes. Recently, quantitative and automatic fringe analysis by using phase shifting method in interferometry has been studied in many fields. In this paper, a real time holographic interferometry system and a phase shifting method combined with digital image processing technique are employed to record and quantitatively analyze holographic fringe patterns. To evaluate our system and analyze errors, comparison of measured deformation with theoretical deformation of cantilever beam was carried out. The accuracy of 4.5% in our system was verified We have tried to apply this method to quantitatively measure the deformation of turbine blade under the bending force.

  • This paper presents the dimensionless wall distance, y+ effect on SST turbulent model for wind turbine blade. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Phase VI wind turbine was used for the study, which the wind tunnel and structural test data has publicly available. The near wall treatment and turbulent characteristics have important role for proper CFD simulation. Most of the CFD development in this area is focused on advanced turbulence model closures including second moment closure models, and so called Low-Reynolds (low-Re) number and two-layer turbulence models. However, in many cases CFD aerodynamic predictions based on these standard models still show a large degree of uncertainty, which can be attributed to the use of the $\epsilon$-equation as the turbulence scale equation and the associated limitations of the near wall treatment. The present paper demonstrates the y+ definition effect on SST (Shear Stress Transport) turbulent model with advanced automatic near wall treatment model and Gamma theta transitional model for transition from lamina to turbulent flow using commercial ANSYS-CFX. In all cases the SST model shows to be superior, as it gives more accurate predictions and is less sensitive to grid variations.

Numerical Study of Channel Area Effects on the Performance Characteristics of Regenerative Type Fuel Pump (재생형 연료펌프의 채널 면적 변화가 성능 특성에 미치는 영향에 대한 수치해석적 연구)

  • The effects of channel area on the performance of regenerative type fuel pump were numerically studied by commercial CFD code (ANSYS CFX-10). To examine the effects of channel area, the shapes of the side channel and blade were simplified. The channel area affected the flow characteristics of the internal recirculation flow between the side channel and the blade groove and also made a difference in the overall performance. These loss mechanism with circulation flow were adopted as a loss coefficient in the performance prediction program. The loss coefficient was newly derived from the results of calculations with different channel area, and compared with the experimental results in the reference paper and used to modify the performance prediction program. The circulation flow characteristics with different channel area, which is related with loss mechanism, were also discussed with the results of 3-dimensional flow calculations.

  • The present study is concerned with the flow patterns induced by various impellers in a rectangular tank. Impellers are FBT (Flat blade turbine), PBT (Pitched blade turbine), Shroud turbine, Rushton turbine, and Helical ribbon turbine types. The solutions of flows in moving reference frames require the use of 'moving' cell zone. The moving zone approaches are based on MRF (Multiple reference frame), which is a steady-state approximation and sliding method, which is an unsteady-state approximation. Numerical results using two moving zone approaches we compared with experiments by Ranade & Joshi, which have done extensive LDA measurements of the flow generated by a standard six-bladed Rushton turbine in a cylindrical baffled vessel. In this paper, we simulated the flow patterns with above-mentioned moving zone approaches and impellers. Turbulence model used is RNG $k-{\epsilon}$ model. Sliding-mesh method is more effective than MRF for simulating the rectangular tank with inlet and outlet. RNG $k-{\epsilon}$ model strongly underestimates the velocity of experimental data and velocity by Chen & Kim's model, but it seems to be correctly predicted in overall distribution.

Rotor-floater-mooring coupled dynamic analysis of mono-column-TLP-type FOWT (Floating Offshore Wind Turbine)

  • Increasing numbers of floating offshore wind turbines are planned and designed these days due to their high potential in massive generation of clean energy from water depth deeper than 50 m. In the present study, a numerical prediction tool has been developed for the fully-coupled dynamic analysis of FOWTs in time domain including aero-blade-tower dynamics and control, mooring dynamics, and platform motions. In particular, the focus of the present study is paid to the dynamic coupling between the rotor and floater and the coupled case is compared against the uncoupled case so that their dynamic coupling effects can be identified. For this purpose, a mono-column mini TLP with 1.5MW turbine for 80m water depth is selected as an example. The time histories and spectra of the FOWT motions and accelerations as well as tether top-tensions are presented for the given collinear wind-wave condition. When compared with the uncoupled analysis, both standard deviations and maximum values of the floater-responses/tower-accelerations and tether tensions are appreciably increased as a result of the rotor-floater dynamic coupling, which may influence the overall design including fatigue-life estimation especially when larger blades are to be used.

A Study on Effect of Aerodynamic Loads on Mooring Line Responses of a Floating Offshore Wind Turbine (공기 동역학 하중이 부유식 해상 풍력 발전기의 계류선 응답에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • This paper presents effect of aerodynamic loads on mooring line responses of a floating offshore wind turbine. A Matlab code based on blade element momentum (BEM) theory is developed to consider aerodynamic loads acting on NREL 5MW wind turbine. The aerodynamic loads are coupled with time-domain hydrodynamic analyses using one-way interaction scheme of the wave and wind loads. A semi-submersible floating platform which is from Offshore Code Comparison Collaborative Continuation(OC4) DeepCWind platform is used with catenary mooring lines simply composed of studless chain links. Average values of mooring peak tensions obtained from aerodynamic load consideration are significantly increased compared to those from simple wind drag force consideration. Consideration of aerodynamic loads also yield larger tension ranges which can be important factor to reduce fatigue life of the mooring lines.
