Recently, renewable energy has been widely used as a source of wind energy and solar energy due to the shortage of fossil fuels and environmental problems. Against this backdrop, wind energy is emerging as an important energy source, and the wind power market is showing rapid growth worldwide. In this study, a high-efficiency wind turbine blade was designed with an integrated blade aerodynamic design for prior research on separate blades. The blade airfoil was applied as NACA 4418, and it was verified by comparing it with the analysis results to evaluate the newly designed blade.

The Nuclear and Fossil Steam Turbines record a considerable number of failures annually. Some of these failures reported are as result of blade failure. The failure of the L-0 blade in a Steam Turbine is one of the most reported blade failure in Nuclear and Fossil steam turbines. This paper seeks to identify the best Non Destructive Evaluation (NDE) method or methods to be used in the steam turbine L-0 blades inspection process. The development of systems engineering processes presents an opportunity to apply NDE inspection to the L-0 blades. This process apply computer modelling of the L-0 using ANSYS and by simulating the stresses experienced by the L-0 blade during operation it is possible to identify the most susceptible areas for crack formation and growth. The results from these models compared to industry data for validation. The analysis of these results used to predict the most probable failure location and failure modes. Therefore NDE inspection can be applied to these areas with greater degree of accuracy. This would be beneficial in the increasing the accuracy in the detection of cracks and hence save inspection time and the overall inspection cost. Furthermore, not only the location for crack formation and NDE inspection determined but also best the NDE inspection technique/techniques to be applied appropriately on the L-0 blade are prescribed.

Temperature distribution in the GTD111 turbine blade used in power plaints is calculated by heat transfer analysis. Linear stress analysis of the turbine blade is also carried out under thermal loads and centrifugal forces. The numerical results of steady state heat transfer analysis slow that high temperature distribution occurs at the leading edge and tip section of the blade. The thermal stress result indicates that the equivalent stress at the tip of the pressure surface is higher than other sections of the blade. Maximum centrifugal stresses without the thermal effect occurs at the front of the fir tree. From the thermal-centrifugal stress analysis, maximum equivalent stress occurs at the fir tree. Stresses applied by the thermal loads and centrifugal forces are less than the yield stress. The GTD111 turbine blade is safe to be used in the power plants.

Recently, the wind energy has been widely used as a renewable energy resource due to lack and environmental issues of the mostly used fossil fuel. This work is to develop a 500W class small wind turbine blade which will be applicable to relatively low speed region like Korea and for the domestic use. For this blade a high efficiency wind turbine blade was designed with the proposing aerodynamic design procedure, and a light and low cost composite structure blade was designed considering fatigue life. Structural analyses including load case study, stress, deformation, buckling and vibration analysis were performed using the Finite Element Method. The fatigue life was estimated using the load spectrum analysis and the Miner rule. In order to evaluate the designed blade, the structural and aerodynamic performance tests were carried out, and the test results were compared with the analysis results.

Helicopter rotor blade is required to be designed by considering the interacting effects among aerodynamics, flexibility, and controllability. The reverse design allows the structural components to have common characteristics by using the configuration numerics and experimental results. This paper aims to design the composite rotor blade which will feature common characteristics with that of BO-105. The present engineering design procedure is done by dividing the rotor blade into a few sections and composite laminates across the cross section. For each section, variational asymptotic beam sectional analysis (VABS) program is used to evaluate its flapwise, lagwise, and torsion stiffnesses to have discrepancy smaller than certain tolerance. Finally, CAMRAD II is used to predict the stress acting on the rotor blade during the specific flight condition and to check whether the present deign is structurally valid.
Nanocomposite blade for dicing semiconductor wafer is investigated for micro/nano-device and micro/nano-fabrication. While metal blade has been used for dicing of silicon wafer, polymer composite blades are used for machining of quartz wafer in semiconductor and cellular phone industry in these days. Organic-inorganic material selection is important to provide the blade with machinability, electrical conductivity, strength, ductility and wear resistance. Maintaining constant thickness with micro-dimension during shaping is one of the important technologies fer machining micro/nano fabrication. In this study the fabrication of blade by wet processing of mixing conducting nano ceramic powder, abrasive powder phenol resin and polyimide has been investigated using an experimental approach in which the thickness differential as the primary design criterion. The effect of drying conduction and post pressure are investigated. As a result wet processing techniques reveal that reliable results are achievable with improved dimension tolerance.

The rotor blade is an important component of a tidal stream turbine and is affected by a large thrust force and load due to the high density of seawater. Therefore, the performance must be secured through the geometrical and structural design of the blade and the blade structural safety to which the composite material is applied. In this study, a 1 MW class large turbine blade was designed using the blade element momentum (BEM) theory. GFRP is a fiber-reinforced plastic used for turbine blade materials. A sandwich structure was applied with CFRP to lay-up the blade cross-section. In addition, to evaluate structural safety according to flow variations, static load analysis within the linear elasticity range was performed using the fluid-structure interactive (FSI) method. Structural safety was evaluated by analyzing tip deflection, strain, and failure index of the blade due to bending moment. As a result, Model-B was able to reduce blade tip deflection and weight. In addition, safety could be secured by indicating that the failure index, inverse reserve factor (IRF), was 1 or less in all load ranges excluding 3.0*Vr of Model-A. In the future, structural safety will be evaluated by applying various failure theories and redesigning the laminated pattern as well as the change of blade material.

The present work focuses on the unsteady aerodynamics and aeroelastic properties of a small-medium sized wind-turbine blade operating under ideal conditions. A tapered/twisted blade representative of commercial blades used in an experiment setup at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory is considered. The aerodynamic loads are computed using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques. For this purpose, FLUENT$^{(R)}$, a commercial finite-volume code that solves the Navier-Stokes and the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations, is used. Turbulence effects in the 2D simulations are modeled using the Wilcox k-w model for validation of the CFD approach. For the 3D aerodynamic simulations, in a first approximation, and considering that the intent is to present a methodology and workflow philosophy more than highly accurate turbulent simulations, the unsteady laminar Navier-Stokes equations were used to determine the unsteady loads acting on the blades. Five different blade pitch angles were considered and their aerodynamic performance compared. The structural dynamics of the flexible wind-turbine blade undergoing significant elastic displacements has been described by a nonlinear flap-lag-torsion slender-beam differential model. The aerodynamic quasi-steady forcing terms needed for the aeroelastic governing equations have been predicted through a strip-theory based on a simple 2D model, and the pertinent aerodynamic coefficients and the distribution over the blade span of the induced velocity derived using CFD. The resulting unsteady hub loads are achieved by a first space integration of the aeroelastic equations by applying the Galerkin's approach and by a time integration using a harmonic balance scheme. Comparison among two- and three- dimensional computations for the unsteady aerodynamic load, the flap, lag and torsional deflections, forces and moments are presented in the paper. Results, discussions and pertinent conclusions are outlined.

The large camber angle theory of turbomachine blade of compressor has been developed recently for the two-dimensional flow by Hawthorn, et al. However, in the above theory it was assumed that the fluid was incompressible and inviscid, and the blades had no thickness. In this study, the flow in a blade cascade being mounted in parallel fashion with blade of arbitrary thickness is studied in order to determine the effects of the camber angle on the performance characteristic of the blade section under the consideration of compressibility and viscosity of fluid. The panel method is used for potential flow analysis. The flow in the boundary-layer is obtained by solving the integral boundary-layer structure through the laminar, transitional , and turbulent flow using the pressure field determined from the potential flow. And then the viscous-inviscid interaction scheme is used for interaction of these two flows. For the determination of the variation in the outlet fluid angle influenced by deviation in cascade flow, the superposition method which is used for single foil is introduced in this analysis. By the introduction of this method, the effects of the deviation on outlet fluid angle and the resulting fluid angle are made to adjust for oneself through the calculation. As the result of this study, the blade of large camber angle, large incidence angle, large pitch-chord ratio has large viscous and compressible effect than those of small camber angle. Lift force increase as camber angle increases, but above 60.deg. of camber angle, lift force decrease as camber angle increases. But drag force increases linearly with camber angle increases in the entire region.
Recently the wind energy has been alternatively used as a renewable energy resource instead of the mostly used fossil fuel due to its lack and environmental issues. This work is to propose a structural design and analysis procedure for development of the 500W class small wind turbine system which will be applicable to relatively low speed region like Korea and for the domestic use. The wind turbine blade was performed structural analysis including stress, deformation, buckling, vibration and fatigue. In addition, the blade should be safe from the impact damage due to FOD(Foreign Object Damage) including the bird strike. MSC.Dytran was used in order to analyze the bird strike penomena on the blade, and the applied method Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian was evaluated by comparison with the previous study results. Finally, the structural test was carried out and its test results were compared with the estimated results for evaluation of the designed structure.
