Nowadays information technology has brought drastic changes into in the libraries, especially in the types of information sources, information users' behavior and the user education programs. The users need to know new information skills to retrieve the adequate information they need, and consequently libraries should develop new instruction programs to meet the user needs according to the radical changes of information technology and daily increasing electronic Information sources including internet resources. In this paper it was researched how to use the library websites for information instruction at the university libraries in Korea, USA and Canada through literature and by visiting the websites of the university libraries. It was found that Korean university libraries focus on providing the physical access to information, while American and Canadian university libraries focus on providing the intellectual access to information as well as the physical access to information. Most Korean university libraries have the entries about library history, library services and collection, outside networked information sources on the menu of their homepages, while there are guides how to use information sources such as subject bibliographies, reference tools, network resource tools, and guides how to write a paper, and information for user instruction on the websites of the western university libraries. It is very promising to make full use of the library webpages for library user education, which nowadays provide very powerful communication interface and make the library users find appealing and accessible.

As of the end of 2020, 937 out of 1,172 public libraries, excluding 235 libraries of the Provincial & Municipal Education Offices, were divided into three groups by library service target and operating organization, and each library name was analyzed. The study reveals that there were 8 basic types and 31 detailed types of local library names, and 5 basic types and 18 detailed types of children's and youth libraries. In the case of private libraries, it was found that there are 5 types of names. The study also reveals that there are several problems in naming, such as the use of two or three place names in one name, the use of unnecessary modifiers, and the indication of library founder and grade.

  • This research reports the results from the pilot evaluation of academic libraries in Korea conducted from September through November 2010 to test the applicability and feasibility of an evaluation model and evaluation indicators developed by this research team. In the first and second stages of this pilot evaluation, quantitative and qualitative indicators were respectively used, and in the third stage a survey for user satisfaction was conducted. Out of 58 applicants which applied for this evaluation, a total of 9 libraries were selected as excellent libraries for each group classified according to the size of a library(large, medium, and small) in 3 areas of specialization and 1 library was awarded the best performed library. Despite such limitations as the use of experimental indicators and a pressing schedule, there were some positive effects including the use of formal statistics, an objective assessment of current status of academic libraries, and the improved interest of university administration in academic libraries.

  • This study aims to increase understanding of current status and changes of academic libraries in South Korea in comparison with those of academic libraries in North America and United Kingdom (UK). The five-year statistics of academic libraries were collected from Korea Education and Research Information Service (KERIS), Association of Research Libraries (ARL), and Society of College, National and University Libraries (SCONUL), and the authors compared the statistical indicators that are comparable to each other. The circumstance and performance of academic libraries in North America were much better than those of South Korea. In addition, the area of library buildings in South Korea was larger than those in UK, and they also had more books and carrels than UK libraries; however, UK libraries had more library staffs, expenditure on material purchase, and interlibrary loan requests. These findings imply that there should be more support on academic libraries in South Korea to increase library staffs and budget, which will invigorate library services and use.

  • This study is to analyze the results of which the Ministry of Culture and Tourism had evaluated the public libraries in 1999. In results, the study finds that the use of "population of legal service area" as a criterion for evaluating public libraries is not quite appropriate. That is, it is found that the use of legal service area by law as a unit of population measurement is not only inconsistent with the current local autonomous administrative structure, but also may distort all evaluation results. Therefore, this study is to criticize several points about using population of legal service area as an evaluation criterion and to suggest the amendment of Library and Reading Promotion Act, which may make the evaluation of public libraries more proper.

  • Currently, it is not easy for most domestic public libraries to collect and provide reliable health information services on their own. Health information is distributed or professional, making it inconvenient for users to use. Based on the implications derived from the case study, the Library Health Information Integration Service Model was proposed as a specialized information service. The model consists of a composition shared by librarians, health and medical experts, and users, focusing on library websites that provide integrated health information integration services, and has the following features. First, it provides health and medical information on a specialized subject. Second, it provides integrated health and medical information services provided in various ways. Third, librarians and health and medical experts work together to provide information services. Fourth, users can freely use health information integration services online and offline. The model presented in this study means that libraries can play a leading role in health information integration services to increase the utilization rate of public libraries and further contribute to librarians serving as experts in health information services.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the current status of the military library services and the factors for promoting the reading of the soldiers and the activation of the use of the library by investigating the perception, use behavior and satisfaction of the library users, and the usefulness of 'JinJung' library collection. For this purpose, we surveyed the users of the Army, Navy, and Air Force military libraries. As a result of the survey, they responded that they were reading to acquire new knowledge and information and to cultivate the education. The favorite reading areas were general fiction, poetry, comic books, martial arts and fantasy novels. In order to encourage the soldiers to read in the military, diversity and quantitative expansion of collections are most needed, and soldiers said they most desire to expand the books on novels, poetry, admissions and employment preparation books. In addition, in order to increase the utilization rate of the military library and the interest in reading, it was necessary to increase the accessibility of the soldiers' library and books to the military, and to increase the library use time.
