On the Effect of Estimated Mean for the Weighted Symmetric Estimator

  • The ordinary least squares estimator and the corresponding pivotal statistics have been widely used for the unit test. Recently several test criteria based on maximum likelihood estimators and weighted symmetric estimator have been proposed for testing the unit root hypothesis in the autoregressive processes. Pantula at el. (1994) showed that the weighted symmetric estimator has good power properties. In this article we use an adjusted estimator for mean in the model when we use weighted symmetric estimator. A simulation study shows that for the small samples, this new test criterion has better power properties than the weighted symmetric estimator.

  • Bivariate distributions play a fundamental role in survival and reliability studies. We consider a regression model for bivariate survival times under right-censored based on the bivariate Kumaraswamy Weibull (Cordeiro et al., Journal of the Franklin Institute, 347, 1399-1429, 2010) distribution to model the dependence of bivariate survival data. We describe some structural properties of the marginal distributions. The method of maximum likelihood and a Bayesian procedure are adopted to estimate the model parameters. We use diagnostic measures based on the local influence and Bayesian case influence diagnostics to detect influential observations in the new model. We also show that the estimates in the bivariate Kumaraswamy Weibull regression model are robust to deal with the presence of outliers in the data. In addition, we use some measures of goodness-of-fit to evaluate the bivariate Kumaraswamy Weibull regression model. The methodology is illustrated by means of a real lifetime data set for kidney patients.

A de-noising method based on connectivity strength between two adjacent pixels

  • The essential idea of de-noising is referring to neighboring pixels of a center pixel to be updated. Conventional adaptive de-noising filters use local statistics, i.e., mean and variance, of neighboring pixels including the center pixel. The drawback of adaptive de-noising filters is that their performance becomes low when edges are contained in neighboring pixels, while anisotropic diffusion de-noising filters remove adaptively noises and preserve edges considering intensity difference between neighboring pixel and the center pixel. The anisotropic diffusion de-noising filters, however, use only intensity difference between neighboring pixels and the center pixel, i.e., local statistics of neighboring pixels and the center pixel are not considered. We propose a new connectivity function of two adjacent pixels using statistics of neighboring pixels and apply connectivity function to diffusion coefficient. Experimental results using an aerial image corrupted by uniform and Gaussian noises showed that the proposed algorithm removed more efficiently noises than conventional diffusion filter and median filter.

  • In order to estimate the damage of orchards due' to natural disasters such as typhoon, severe rain, freezing or frost, it is necessary to estimate the number of fruit bearing before and after the damage. To estimate the fruit bearing after the damages are easily done by delegations, but it cost too high to survey every insured farm household and calculate the fruit bearing before the damage. In this article, we suggest to use a random coefficient model to predict the numbers of fruit bearing in the orchards before the damage based on the tree age and the area information.

  • We evaluate the convolution sum $W_{a,b}(n):=\sum_{al+bm=n}{\sigma}(l){\sigma}(m)$ for (a, b) = (1, 28),(4, 7),(2, 7) for all positive integers n. We use a modular form approach. We also re-evaluate the known sums $W_{1,14}(n)$ and $W_{1,7}(n)$ with our method. We then use these evaluations to determine the number of representations of n by the octonary quadratic form $x^2_1+x^2_2+x^2_3+x^2_4+7(x^2_5+x^2_6+x^2_7+x^2_8)$. Finally we express the modular forms ${\Delta}_{4,7}(z)$, ${\Delta}_{4,14,1}(z)$ and ${\Delta}_{4,14,2}(z)$ (given in [10, 14]) as linear combinations of eta quotients.

  • Semi-supervised learning has gained significant attention in recent applications. In this article, we provide a selective overview of popular semi-supervised methods and then propose a simple but effective algorithm for semi-supervised classification using support vector machines (SVM), one of the most popular binary classifiers in a machine learning community. The idea is simple as follows. First, we apply the dimension reduction to the unlabeled observations and cluster them to assign labels on the reduced space. SVM is then employed to the combined set of labeled and unlabeled observations to construct a classification rule. The use of SVM enables us to extend it to the nonlinear counterpart via kernel trick. Our numerical experiments under various scenarios demonstrate that the proposed method is promising in semi-supervised classification.

  • The use of pooled standard deviation can reduce the efficiency loss in optimum allocation when strata standard deviations are estimated and several of them are equal. Also shown is that the pooled standard deviation is useful in optimum allocation under a multivariate setting. In addition to theoretical development, we provide the result of simulation study to support the theory.

  • Due to a computerized data processing, there are many cases when we encounter a huge data set. On the other hand, advances in computing technologies make it possible to deal with a huge data set. One important area is the data mining. In this paper we consider data mining when the dependent variable is binary. The proposed method is to use the poly-class model when the independent variables consists of continuous and discrete variables. An example is provided.

  • This paper provides a statistical algorithm which detects COD (chemical oxygen demand) measurement machine error on real-time. For this we propose to use regression model fitting and check its validity against the current observations. The main idea is that the normal regression relation between COD measurement and other parameters inside the machine will be violated when the machine is out of order.

  • In this research, we propose a nonparametric test procedure for the right censored and grouped data under the additive hazards model. For deriving the test statistics, we use the likelihood principle. Then we illustrate proposed test with an example and compare the performance with other procedure by obtaining empirical powers. Finally we discuss some interesting features concerning the proposed test.
