  • Objective: The present study was to improve the graphic user interface (GUI) of a military computer-based training (CBT) system in terms of usability. Background: Existing studies have focused on usability evaluation of a particular GUI type such as sequence, hierarchy, or context type; however, few research has been conducted which identifies preferred GUI features based on a comparative analysis of different GUI types. Method: A comparative evaluation was conducted by 9 CBT design experts using a 7-point scale (1: very low, 4: neutral, and 7: very high) on hierarchy and context GUI types of a military CBT system in terms of 10 usability criteria. Then, preferred features of the hierarchy and context types being accommodated, a new GUI was developed and validated by 22 CBT users. Results: While the hierarchy type was found preferred by 1.6 times in terms of controllability to the context type, the opposite was found in terms of attractiveness, simplicity, and responsiveness by 0.6, 0.8, and 0.8 times, respectively. The proposed GUI was found superior to the hierarchy and context types in terms of accessibility and informativeness by more than 1.5 times, but inferior to the hierarchy and context type in terms of simplicity by 0.6 and 0.9 times, respectively. Conclusion: The new GUI developed by accommodating the preferred features of the hierarchy and context types improves usability in terms of accessibility and informativeness except simplicity. Application: The comparative analysis of various GUIs can be applied to develop an improved GUI in a systematic manner based on preferred features of the existing GUIs.

  • Current web accessibility checks and automatic assessments have been pointed out that the assessment items and scores are evaluated from the developer's point of view rather than from the user's one. In addition, although most of the grades of an automatic assessment on the public web sites are excellent because they are built in accordance with the web accessibility development guidelines, not a few web sites shows relatively low grades in evaluating their usability test made by those users. Taking into account the inadequacy of these web accessibility assessments, this study has identified the differences between the grades of usability evaluations and automatic evaluations for people with low vision and analyzed the major factors affecting web accessibility usability evaluations using Repertory Grid Techniques. Also, the Hard Laddering method of the Means-End Chain theory was adopted to visualize the relationship between Attributes-Conferences-Value and a hierarchical value system analysis based on FGI(Focused Group Interview) to people with the low vision. This study proposed the measures to improve the current web accessibility automatic assessment allocation, expert evaluation criteria, and user task assessment. In particular, it is a web accessibility user evaluation model that can consider the web accessibility quality certification criteria and user review assessment by directly analyzing the user cognitive structure and value system. This study is expected to be useful as a research to enhance the quality of web accessibility assessment.

  • So far, various researches have been conducted on evaluation of e-learning software, but subjective evaluation criteria are formed according to the classification presented from the viewpoint of the researcher rather than systematized form according to related standards. In addition, standards for software evaluation are continuously being supplemented for practical use, so it is urgent to establish evaluation bases by establishing evaluation criteria. Therefore, in order to establish the quality evaluation standard of e-learning software, this study analyzes the quality requirements of e-learning software based on the usability system among the quality characteristics of ISO/IEC 25000 series. This evaluation standard is distinguished by the fact that the evaluation standard of e-learning software that reflects the latest trend of related standardization has been established and practical utilization has been improved. It can be used effectively for quality evaluation and certification of e-learning software in the future.

  • The public data portal provides various public data created by the government in the form of files and open APIs. In order to increase the usability of public open data, a variety of information should be provided to users and should be convenient to use for users. This requires the structured data design plan of the public data. In this paper, we propose a data design method to improve the usability of the Seoul subway public data. For the study, we first identify some properties of the current subway public data and then classify the data based on these properties. The properties used as classification criteria are stored properties, derived properties, static properties, and dynamic properties. We also analyze the limitations of current data for each property. Based on this analysis, we classify currently used subway public data into code entities, base entities, and history entities and present the improved design of entities according to this classification. In addition, we propose data retrieval functions to increase the utilization of the data. If the data is designed according to the proposed design of this paper, it will be possible to solve the problem of duplication and inconsistency of the data currently used and to implement more structural data. As a result, it can provide more functions for users, which is the basis for increasing usability of subway public data.

  • The increased competition in service development in various industrial sectors highlights the importance of producing high-quality services that provide a positive user experience. Although usability evaluation is recognized as an important method of verification of high quality service and utility, the general usability evaluation method has limitations of not taking the characteristics of various participants due to its uniform composition to account. As the following flaws can reduce evaluation efficiency, developing a new guideline seems to be the next step. Thus, this study focused on criteria on how to evaluate the usability for children and proposed non-face-to-face remote usability evaluation configurations and progress guidelines to increase the effectiveness. The following usability evaluation experiment was conducted based on the proposed guidelines and in this process, the effectiveness of the guidelines was verified and the items that needed to be supplemented were derived. It is expected that the non-face-to-face remote usability evaluation guidelines proposed through the study will be used as the basis for designing usability evaluations of services developed for children.
